I'm new, with framerate issues.

I love the game, but I have several problems.

I'm up to the 'slaughterhouse' mission and I cannot complete it because my frame rate is ridiculous (5fps average) and after a while of playing it ALWAYS freezes. (I assume I could get past the previous missions because there was less to lag up my computer)

My computer isn't that great, but still.
I have 512mbs of ram, all extra graphics are turned off.
I have a Geforce FX 5200 (128mb) graphics card.
Windows Xp

Is there any way to change the resolution perhaps? 800x600 would probably run better. I did try to change it via right clicking on the application, and changing it to 640x480 (under the compatibility tab), but that seems to restrict my mouse movement ingame.

Also, my version says 0.9c when I downloaded 0.9d. This is normal?

Less than one GB of RAM isn't very ideal, and even with 2 GBs of RAM, my FPS often drops if I start importing medium-complexity custom ships. I would assume it's mostly because of BSF's engine, as Game Maker isn't the most friendly program around.

Darn. Well, I still think that changing the resolution would help a lot. Is there any effective way to do this?

BSF isn't graphics intensive. It's CPU and RAM intensive.

Your graphics card isn't the limiting factor. It's your RAM.

512MB system RAM is horribly low... that kind of RAM was barely sufficient for stuff a decade ago.

I find turning off all your app.s on your win. tool-bar helpful in this regard

You could free up as much of that 512mb as possible by closing all your other programs, but yeah. A RAM upgrade would probably be best. GM apparently is horribly unoptimized for something like BSF.

RAM upgrade would be in your near future if you want to play BSF (and later, play around with the Ship Maker for your own creations).

In the meantime, making your OS leaner by closing background processes could help.
