Move your mouse over the heigth and width counter and click the right mouse key. Then you can change the size, and switch between dimensions using enter.

BSF's engine isn't the most spectacular, but it's damn good compared to other free games and engines. My laptop that can run EVE without qualms has trouble running a 20 ship battle.

Think of it as the "Crysis" of free games  .

Well if you make very simple ships of 5-10 sections you can pull off a dozen or so, though it will still be lagtastic. Also not that it helps much but I noticed a significant decrease in speed when you have a ship selected, so pressing G to turn off the user interface speeds it up slightly.

Well, you could have 40-50 single section, single weapon ships...probably.
You know, make the whole ship one sprite, give it one weapon (Preferably with slow RoF).

Pfft, Crysis runs better than BSF, explosion-for-explosion. :P

Yes, but Crysis didn't use the GM engine.

And if it did, there's some serious manipulation required to get it to run a 3d game so smooth.
