Sudden Horrible Lag

Only way I know how to describe it, anyways, recently the games been lagging really really badly, going at 7 fps at good moments while hitting 1 usually. This is at the main menu, and when launching anything. It speeds up to 10 sometimes, then lags/freezes, and hits 5 and below. Any ideas?

Check your other processes using the task manager. Perhaps your antivirus is running scans. Perhaps a crashed application is using much CPU cycles.

This is true. Programs like GCQL for instance continue running even after I close DS. If I'm editing anything in photoshop or arcmap with shipmaker open, I usually need to cancel them in taskmanager even if I've closed the main program, before I can launch a ship. Ipod and Itunes also like to keep running something. Doesn't help much, but if it almost always seriously reduces the lag when I clear out the non-system processes.
