Startup error

Post by Sarcasm Inc »

I'm running Windows Vista Premium, 64-Bit. With an Intel E8400, Radeon 4870.

When I go to start BF (v0.90d), the following error pops up.

ERROR in action number 1 of Other Event: Game Start for object GUI_MainTitle: Error defining an external function.

I've tried running BF as an administrator, running it in compatibility mode and re-downloading and installing, none of which have worked.

Precisely what is causing said error, and how can it be solved?

Tried restarting lately (if your PC has gone into hiberate?), or turning User Account Control off?

I'm getting this error too; it doesn't go away even after a clean re-install.

Full error log:

ERROR in
action number 1
of Other Event: Game Start
for object GUI_MainTitle:

Error defining an external function.

This is on a Vista Home 64 bit machine, ATI Radeon HD 4800

It's pissing me off so much I registered just to post this

Its caused by windows not allowing the game to access the music dll. You can get around it by opening up the ini file and disabling music (then the music dll won't be used). Alternatively you can get around it by installing the game to your user folder, usually c:\USERNAME.

I set the volume to 0 and that fixed it for me. Thanks a lot. The "install to user directory" didn't work, however (or maybe I did it wrong). Just out of curiosity, what exactly is going wrong? Is it some obscure permissions problem?

Yea, vista doesn't give programs the ability to read/write even to itself.
