BSF constantly getting error reports

Post by Gordon Frohman »

This is strange. Whenever I load BSF I get a message saying that an error has occured and it must close the program. Would anyone have a suggestion on where I should go from here? Because I'm getting really bored of just making ships.
Anyone who has heard of me has probably already fallen victim to my traps in Ravenholm... sorry

Could you please elaborate on the error so that we can help you better? I don't think just telling us that your game can't load will exactly assist you.

Some system information would also be useful - are you using a laptop or a desktop, WinXP or Vista, etc. etc.

Are you still running shipbuilder? I find that I can only run one of them at a time. The other option is to restart and see if that fixes things, it usually clears errors up in my experience.

BSF has trouble running on Vista laptops after you hibernate the thing. Just restart the computer from scratch before playing. Also, if you have Vista's VAC enabled, you have to install the game to a folder to which you have read/write privileges such as your personal user folder (c:\username or somethign like that)

Ok guys, BSF stopped working for me out of the blue! I uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times and it is still giving me the same errors. The second time I uninstalled, I deleted the directory and installed fresh.

This is the error report when I open BSF:
___________________________________________
ERROR in
action number 1
of Other Event: Game Start
for object GUI_MainTitle:

Error defining an external function.

My system info are as follows:
Intel C2D 6600
2Gb Ram
Asus 8600 GTS gfx card (169.75 forceware drivers)
Vista SP1

Didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Didn't install anything new, except Notepad ++ but BSF was working fine during that time. One day later, BSF exploded.

UPDATE: Bah ignore me. I restarted my PC and it works again. Phew, crisis averted!

Either way, that error is caused by the game either not being able to access or not being able to find the required .dll files to play the game. Specifically, the bgm.dll and bass.dll files that should be in the game folder.

If they are not present, then it's obvious why the game can't access them. The other possibility is that you have restricted access to the game folder, which is usually the case on Vista because the UAC restricts access to the program files folder.

Yea Game Maker 7 doesn't support 95/ME. I didn't know that at the point I upgraded and it's too late now.
