Personally, when I name anything, I use a random not-word. Krangus dreadnought, Arg Tribe, Iilv Union... If you know any coding language, make a program that randomly chooses letters, alternating consonant-vowel. May sound weird but i saw it used once and the results looked like real words. Still, I just make up a name.

Example:

Titan - "Gabriel"
Destroyer - "Dragoon"

Saying "The Dragoon" doesn't sound as good as saying "The Gabriel", but a "Dragoon class destroyer" sounds pretty nice.
Actually neither one of those sound good at ALL with "The" on it...

I try, key word "try" to use a judgemental (?) system, like Liberty, Vindicator, Judgement, Liberator, Patriot, Independence.
It's nice to know that we have an absolute expert on fictional warship names here. But perhaps my deplorable choice for an example was not as good as I had hoped. Here's another.

The "Formidable"

I'm just stressing that for giant ships, you usually assume that there's only one, and that they are not mass-produced, so you give them a single name, instead of a class name.
The Galatea, The Bastion, The Aquataine, The Psamtik, The Colossus, names used on FreeSpace and FreeSpace 2, that sound good as a unique name.

Here you go.

Really good for some obscure and random English words you might want to use.

GVD Psamtik was a Vasudan ship on Freespace 2, a fairly powerful one as well. Then it met the Santhanas and exploded as the 4 bigass beam cannons ripped it to shreds.

The Bastion and Colossus would be ones that I would use, I don't know what the rest mean. I'd add Olympus and Atlas to the list.

The HMS "Formidable" was a gunship in the British Royal Navy at the start of WWI, and I think it has the best sounding ship name ever.

Claymore, Flamberdge (sp?), Hyperion, etc.
Good category for ship names.
