You could always make the animation as a doodad, and you would probably be better off asking for it this way, as if it weren't a doodad parts of the gun would look weird when the gun was firing, ie the transparent parts, as GM takes a gif approach to transparency.
So...your plan is to parent a doodad to the gun to get the animation done, right?
Remind me again how:
-it is possible to parent shit to weapons?
-to get the doodad to activate on the exact moment the gun is firing? As I recall, you can't trigger doodads.
Second off, ALL animated weapon sprites are a single .gif. And it's never been a problem in the past.

if the glow were to go over a pixel that were supposed to be transparent, then as the glow left it you would see the glow mixed with the transparency color, red, green, pink, whatever. But it would show up.
You can't parent a doodad to a weapon but you can parent it to a section that has a diver.
Idk about the triggering part, I dislike using triggers too much. Mostly because I make small ships and they tend to work better without them.
So you want every animated weapon to need a driver to be animated in the first place.
That is...overly complex and completely unnessecary. If you'll actually run some battles with, say, a repeating arty, you'll see that animation blending is hardly noticeable in a fight.
