The design seems to be fairly interesting.
I would recommend cleaning up the area near the "head" of the ship. The grey sections seem a bit messy to me.
The transition between the midbody and the "head" seems to be a bit awkward.
On your second model, you seem to be layering an asymmetrical shiny piece directly on another sprite. I don't think it's really working out.

I agree the transition isn't entirely smooth but you can work on that. As for the grey bit: I like it. It's personal taste, but it looks fine if you ask me.
Quite frankly I wonder why I ever began making ships for this. You see, my work never becomes quite as good as I feel it deserves to.
