Power is irrelevant. We don't care about who or what your ship can beat, because any idiot can slap a zillion-damage beam on a core along with a few sections.

Designs that look good are more interesting to people here - and ships with all their guns facing dead forward are generally not considered good or interesting designs.

Why would I want to do that? It would be weak and incapable of withstanding any amount of firepower, would be difficult to attach engines to (I usually zero out their X/Y though) and besides that, anything that is not symmetrical REALLY bugs me.

Ninja'ed: I have not done anysuch thing. I have a few ships like that, but I refrain from posting them here.
And do not tell me power is irrelevant, there is no point in building a ship that is incapable of defending itself.

A ship can effectively have a single weapon. Or none at all. No one cares about its guns, but rather what it looks like. Now build in such a way that it would make the ship I just posted look horrible. I dare you.

Ah, well in that case, great job. But you expect me to be able to put that to shame? With a week, perhaps. not in the space a of a few hours.
However, at the moment I do not have that much time.
My shipbuilding revolves around building a ship, and then testing it's combat capability in a active combat situation.

The thing is, as Arc mentioned, firepower and combat capability is completely arbitary. Most people (read: pretty much everyone) value aesthetics much more, since it's much harder to get a nice-looking ship than it is to get a WTFPWNZOR thingy. Ships here are evaluated and judged mostly on aesthetic appeal.
Getting to the top shipbuilder's level is something that takes a lot of time and practice. You can't become an expert overnight, but keep (well, start) improving and practicing and you'll get there eventually.

Perhaps I am closer now, I have found the single best pack of sprites I have ever seen, my first ship using them:

Congratulations, you've stumbled across the single most abused section pack ever made. It adds character if arranged meticulously or paired with other section packs, but many new builders fuck it up and just build cluttered, amorphous shitbricks.

Your new ship isn't bad as such (probably because it's small), but I'd say you're treading a thin line. Try building on a blank background, it should help you get a better feel for the outside shape of the thing.

Also, you should try merging sprite packs on your ships ( although NOT SW and Kae_shn or many other shaded sprites).
