My new Flagship: 'OUTCAST'

My new Flagship: 'OUTCAST'

Post by Necrontyr1998 »

After building up the ships in my fleet collection: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6507, I decided that I should have a main ship for mega encounters, tournaments and the like, but also look good. So over the last week I have been building, testing, upgrading and arming my latest master piece:

The ship is still under examination/upgrading and is subject to change.

P.s: I know people say that you shouldn't mix SW sections with shaded sections, but I am quite happy with the outcome.

In my opinion, the ship seems like clutter should be a major problem. But for some reason it really isn't bothering me too much. I think it has to do with the way the colors are laid out. That said, I think instead of doing the slight fake aegis on the outer bits, actually coloring the light green green sections would be best. I actually quite like this though.

The aegis' on the outside aren't fake, i know they look a bit odd but i want the ship to be functional as well as aesthetic. I see what you mean though, thanks for the advice.

edit: yeah, i set the aegis modules alpha to 0 and ship is so big i had to zoom out for the overall pic's so the trigger lines would probably too small to see.

Ohhh. I got a bit thrown cause there were no trigger lines that are usually there with aegis. and no problem, keep building!

Just improved the bow area with a few more guns (naturally). I realized that enemy ships that approach head on to the 'Outcast' tend to be the ones that are destroyed last, I then saw that this was caused by the lack of forward facing guns... ...Easily fixed.

I also noticed that the 'Shroud missiles' (EMP torpedoes) launched from the bow, only ever hit their target if its interceptor's are destroyed or the ship already has the electrical overload attribute due to a mass destruction of its sections (in which case the 'shroud missiles' are useless). To fix this I positioned HV launchers nearby and set them to launch 3 escort missiles slightly ahead of the 'Shrouds to reduce the chances of them being hit. See pic below:

This is impressive if only for the scope of it. There are certainly areas that bug me but overall it looks like you put a ton of thought into it so can't fault you there. I'm a sucker for monstrous battleships with loads of guns  Though I mostly agree about the blending not standing out, are those dark shiny pieces supposed to be lower than everything else? That and the lack of detail inside the warplight energy drives are the only parts that bother me straight out but still a ship I'd love to send against my fleet.
I really like that detailed bit in front of the bridge. If it could use anything, its lights or windows or something to give contrast against the hull.

Wow, from a brilliant ship builder such as yourself that means a lot. Thanks!

I suppose for an engine there aren't as meany detailed parts as what you would expect. maybe i could spruce it up.
With the depthing, i like to imagine that there's a sun directly over the center of the ship:

The darker areas are under/lower an adjacent section but will gradually lighten again unless there isn't enough room. sorry if im being vague.

Again, i see what you mean but im worried that too much more detail will cause even more lag than the sheer size of the ship already does. :?

Well no the engine area is plenty detailed, it was just that green glowy bit I was looking at, but if its supposed to be a giant energy ball or some kind of reactor like that, then it works fine! And ya if its already lagging then best not to overstress the design. I like the decal effect though.

You should still put some gradients or something on the big green glow. Even if it's just one gradient that's slightly lighter it'd help a lot.
And the core area doesn't really fit well. While I think I get what you were trying to do, I think you should cover it up or replace it with something.

The whole thing is, I'm sorry to say, an ugly, chunky mess with few redeeming features. There's lots of really unnecessary tiling that has no variation to make it look interesting, the external shape is just bland as hell, and you combined sections with almost no shading with Shiny sections, which looks terrible.

Seriously, Kae_shn sections DO NOT GO with any other Kae_whatever sections. They should never, ever be used together.

The shading on this is also really weird and not very consistent... idk, I don't like it at all, but hey, you're still learning, I suppose.

Just... build smaller, and focus on 1) An interesting shape, and 2) Coherent internal details without mess and clutter. Building such a large ship with so little experience is probably a bad idea.

What are the redeeming features so i know for next time?

I didn't think that the un-shaded sections would be a problem since they are in positions where there is nothing to cast a shade.

I know, *wince* sorry.

It works ok in the pseudo chainships.

Ok

How about this?:
I know its not so good, i started it 30mins ago.

Um... no it doesn't? Kae_shn sections are only used with DST_swnc sprites and HorseMonster sprites in the Pseudo Chainship project. No other Kae_anything sections were used at all. Using them was in fact explicitly forbidden!

Are you trolling me? Or are you unironically making a ship consisting almost entirely out of the same section repeated a dozens of times? That is a more interesting shape, at least, but you might want to reconsider it, because the whole "ship shaped like a bird" thing has been done so many times before.

There are a few small parts where the details kinda mesh together well, and you sort of did a decent job with the shading in some parts... in other parts it's pretty awful, though. It's difficult for me to point out specific parts of it and say "I like that". Just the fact that I don't completely hate the ship tells me that there must be some redeeming qualities hidden away on it.

Ship is fine, 90% of builders do a lot worse on big ships. Hull shape is nice because its bold and screams "fuck yeah", perhaps the front could be improved a bit.

The shiny sections do match poorly with the other sections though, the level of detail is entirely different and it breaks up the ship, try a ship without mixing them. You can use some more shading or hard lines to bring out the middle structure, layering it a bit reduces the feeling of clutter.

Want more

ps: everyone does the bird ship
