This is a concept I've had in the back of my head for quite some time for the Limited Realism Category of the BSF Beauty Pageant. The idea is that it is the first ever, known, intergalactic craft capable of travelling at tremendous speed. Image below is the concept when it is stationery with the normal shield and the one below that is when it at near maximum speed. Will add annotations and technical descriptions of each part in due time, I just want to check if the design looks right.

P.S. Can anyone explain to me how to make the shield glow more as it accelerates and/or redirect me to an explanation please.

I'm digging the shield effect (looks like its entering the atmosphere) however I must say that the rocket nozzle used is far too small. I believe jwa edited some DST sections for some nice beefy engines.

i like the shield glow, you could implement it really nicely in some sort of orbit to ground ballistic missile system... the ship itslef is a bit meh... no real shading and lots of repetition = very boring. try adding some variation and points of interest

I love this forum, replies are always so quick its great. Doogie can you please redirect me to that larger engine nozzel. Also vidboi do not worry I have thought of the physics fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, and am currently trying to put it into text, its to do with tachyons look em up tis quite interesting.

You know, Since this is for the BP those edited sections might not be legit. It might be wise to either wait until SWS answers my question. Another option is to use the new shiny sections, I bet you could make a nice engine with those. I think there are some DST sections that are also suitable for this (i'm not on my shipmaking computer right now).

As for the ship itself, I believe the flare should also be beefier. It might be cool to make it a cruise missile instead and use Kamikaze AI and lots of critical objects ....hehe

Also, don't get used to instant feedback, vidboi and I are some of the few active members on this forum.

He submitted it to the Freeform Category. You're allowed to use any sections you want for that, even modified sections or sections you made yourself. This is all in the rules. The only stipulation was that using sections that you designed specifically for the ship, or using a cut-up image to make sections, is unacceptable.

Oh. Derp, I was thinking of a different ship. Forgot what thread I was looking in, as I had multiple ones open. Custom sections are not allowed for Limited Realism. Custom weapon sprites, custom bullets, custom glows and doodads, all fine. Custom sections, or editted versions of approved sections, are not. In fact, that's quite clear in the rules for anyone capable of reading comprehension.

Isn't that what FTL travel tends to do anyway? Infinite energy required to accelerate particles to light speed blah blah blah.

As for the ship there's really nothing to commend it for, beyond the fact it looks marginally like a semi-realistic ship compared to some of the trash that gets posted up sometimes. There's no shading, there's hardly any detail, it's the same half dozen sections used over and over and over... oh, and with a ridiculously stretched shield on top.

Try making something interesting.

I've rebuilt sections, added a larger engine, changed the engine flare, modified the shading and added a comms array. It looks better now any more C&C is welcome though. I also have made a PDF with details on each part but its not compatible with the forum, could someone perhaps provide me with a file format that work...

okay that actually looks marginally worse than it was before =/ the shading has far too much contrast and breaks the coherency of the ship apart, the new thruster looks odd as it's far to bright and also needs some shading and there's a centering error on the section right in front of it, and don't even get me started on the pointlessness of a lightspeed communications transmitter on an ftl ship... (although the dish does look pretty cool, if a little oversized) what the ship really needs is some more detail down the length of it crossways. perhaps some hm superstructure sections linking the tubes together or the like



hmmm, in most cases i suppose they use the excuse of travelling through 'subspace' so they don't actually exceed the speed of light, they just traverse a shorter distance. imo the most feasible ftl idea out there is the Infinite Improbability Drive in the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which just goes to show how messed up it all is xD

I want to get across a modular design of a ship that has parts that can be manufactured from separate foundries and then assembled as one vessel, like how the ISS was built through a unified effort by many different powers. It's meant to be as if man is first stepping on the moon or activating the LHC.

I don't think that shield changing color as it accelerates is doable, sorry. For how the exhaust looks right now, kinda like a beam, the ship might look cool using a light sail. That or one of those giant shields on the back and maybe use an explosion gif as the exhaust sprite like where they detonate nukes behind the ship to propel it? All silly to me but might be doable here. There also used to be a thing where you set the amount of thrust lost by a thruster being destroyed to a negative value so the ship sped up if a specific piece was destroyed...not sure if that would help here or still works.

I will say I like how you used the exhaust nozzle towards the front as a connector for the three smaller tubes, but the shield is covering the nose of the ship...

I might be wrong, but having the shield change should be doable with a thruster. It wouldn't actually act as a shield, but if you fiddle with the thruster flare sprite right, it should be dooable. You'd have the problem of the other shield underneath, but if you make that translucent enough, it shouldn't show up too much.
Sorry if this doesn't work. I've not tried it, so it's just an idea.

And jwa, exploding nukes are a wonderful method of propulsion, and should definitely be done in BSF. It's a shame they can't be made to actually damage, but it'd still be cool.
Edit for clarification. I figured it might be misread this way but I didn't want to make any assumptions (which I may be doing anyway): I know the nuclear propulsion thing is not jwa's idea, I've heard about it before, and was saying it'd be cool if someone did it in BSF.
