@Longcat. YOU are a newbie. I've seen your work, this is better.
@Gunzershreck. You seem to have a nice, solid style going. However you do suffer from a tad bit of stretching (ship 2). Your ships are nice looking at first, but when you look closer you start seeing flaws. I would advise you to practice on sectionwork. This can be done several ways...
1. Just get new sprites and switch to SW style.
2. Look at ships in places like the HOLY SHIP! forum or Anna's (thats his name, Anna for short) thread.

I do congratulate you on avoiding many newbie mistakes.

By stretching Doogie means increasing the size of the sprite along the x or y axis in the ed tab. You can generally get away with it if it's minimal, but if you go overboard it distorts the lines of the sprite too much and makes it look odd. The sw and shn sections are definitely worth downloading, nobody seems to care much for the old style any more. I'm a bit of a recent convert myself. If you do download some new sprites make sure when you unpack them that they don't end up double foldered. Nice colouring on your ships, especially like the shape of the bottom one. Keep on buildin'!

"Stretching" is just a term we give to resizing sections/weapons enough so that you can tell that they have been resized.
Note: An aegis section will not look stretched. Neither will most doodads.

Edit* dang...ninja'd

The "hangar glow" is Ixranin's gradiant. It can be found here as the first pic under "Effects." Just right-click on it and save it in the appropriate folder. Hope this helps.

For a prime example of stretching see page 4 of the custom ships gallery. Doogie, even doodads can look odd if you stretch 'em enough (>4 times or so)

Vidboi still has them on his page, in the Custom ships section.

Im gonna jump on the bandwagon here: DON'T STRETCH. STRETCH BAD. STRETCH MAKE VIEWERS SAD.

You've got some potential in shape design, as they're not all flying triangles/diamonds. There's little bits and pieces of well done areas, but you need to work on your section depthing. Case point: the topmost ship. On the frontal side pods, the outer triangle sections are over the central rectangular piece. While this discrepancy isn't very proclaimed, should you move on to SWA style ships, it will be.

Doodad/anything stretching is bad.
