The ship looks kinda realistic, but i like bigerships , still the texture looks good and i kinda like it

@fatrat - thanks! the sprites needed to look realistic to actually look any good. i've only actually had BSF for about 2 weeks now...

@dyoano - the technique i learn from making realistic metal textures for 3d modelling. start with a mid grey, add lots of noise and apply oilify (or sponge if you're using photoshop) and you get a nice effect.

@Qinetix - i've got some bigger ships in the works. i've planned an escort carrier based on the destroyer hull, I'm thinking about a battleship (with plenty of artillery) and I've made a plan for a huge construction yard/fleet command/carrier station

I really like the way this one looks. The only suggestion I'd make is to add some teamstripes on there to give it a dash of colour, or maybe to add some minor details.

yeah, the colour scheme could do with some, well, colour... i'm thinking of adding more colour by adding indicators on weapons/generators displaying how much energy they have, and i could implement some interesting game mechanics that way...

almost finished now. all section sprites are made and i'm now pleased with the body of the ship. made HEAPEMAC sprites and working on other weapons now, but I'm thinking of redoing the main cannon as they're a bit bland

some slight changes, I put some extra sections at the back to protect the thrusters and widen that section as it looked too skinny. all sprites are now various shades of slate grey rather than just normal grey...

That's an absolutely amazing texture going on the ship right there. Can you release the sprites or the filters used for it?

The newer texture looks rather smooth, like stone rather than steel or some kind of metal.

thanks. the colour change looks better in game, as the pure grey looks slightly red tinted and the blue looks more like the grey in ship maker. see the picture below, where I used a blue background instead of green.

update - missile launchers have been re-replaced with fusion cannon. all weapon sprites are now my own

almost up for download! just need to animate the flak guns...

After playing around with the Tesla i have to say it plays just as it looks. In other words good. But do you have any plans to make a full fleet in this style?

yeah I've got plenty of ideas. I've currenty made designs for a light carrier based on the tesla hull, a light cruiser and a support frigate. I've made a pretty decent fighter that I'll post with the carrier. I'm also working on concepts for larger vessels (I need a big gunned battleship just for the awesomeness) and I've got a plan for a huge dock/command centre/airfiled?(in space...)/construction yard (dunno if my computers gonna be up for that). I'm officially off school for Easter now so I should have some time when I'm not catching up on coursework.

p.s. have you tried it in direct control? lmb to fire HEAPEMACs and rmb to fire the artillery. works nicely

p.p.s. I'm going to do an updated download with different variants of the design

p.p.p.s. I'm also planning on making versions of the stock sprites in this style, it'll take time though as each one will need atleast 4 different variants for the shading to work.

p.p.p.p.s. any comments on the turret animations? this is the first time i've made muzzle flashes without a transparency map so I don't know how good they came out

yeah, the lack of detail is deceptive. you can use the sections for anything you want, but they're pretty difficult to use differently. all the gimp files are there, so if you want to edit them you can

I just ended testing your ship vs my ships... your as enemy... YOUR SHIP IS A MONSTER!!!! To bring it down i had to use hell of a fire power. im Sad now.

seriously? i thought it was pretty balanced and not really that overpowered, compared to metagame ships it's not that powerful for it's class. overpowered is the battleship I created using the same sprites, it can take out heavy battleships in single hits... (but i messed around with the sprites so it won't load any more *sadface*)

anyway, I've almost finished the IFNS Serenity which is a support and supression version armed with SWORD-Class missiles :D

seriously? then my ships are weak... I need to see meta game for some serious study.
