In general, your small ships are excellent, some of them are practically perfect. Your larger ships on the other hand have too much repetition and/or unappealing shapes. Some of the 'random ships' you made show a lot of promise, I hope you will expand on them in the future.

Well how about another small ship then! :)

Image

One beam at the front, two gatling blasters on the flanks, and 6 broadsiding anti-fighter/flak-saturation gatling pulses, all specced up or down to my own liking.

A bit generic but creativity is clashing with RL and RL is beating it to a pulp. But i am kinda proud of my first use of the shipwrightizator on a couple of sections i couldn't find SW versions for, one of Blackhart's and another of...i think AidenAdv's? I'm pretty certain from the AA file heading but it's hard to keep track once their all dumped into folders :?. Oh! also first time of using layered beams, i know it's actually rather basic but it suddenly occured to me i'd never done it.

Edit: Now i know i'm back it full swing cause i'm editing :D since i probably edit my posts more than i build ships lol.

Image

Longer ship, two triple Missile launchers on the flanks, four pulsed beamers quasi-broadside, and one nice big quad particle rifle turret in the middle. Oh and a double shot particle pd gun

Image

Wider ship, two 12 barrelled light Missile batteries on the wings, large pulsed beam turret in the middle, and a heavy sabot on the front which i'm still trying to get to work, since for some reason the shot stops at the first hit :? obviously making it nigh on ineffective. I have widened the bullet but the length is the same so i doubt that's it...

And i know i've coloured some pieces but that was just cause it took my fancy, i haven't actually depthed shaded anything yet.

Oh and i'm not gonna put out any of these sprites before i get accused of not asking permission, they're just for my own use.

Edit: Fiddled around with the big old cluster rocket sprite from Melv...

Image

Think these make it clearer what those weapons actually are.

Edit: Torpedo Frigate

Image

Two powerful but slow reloading and reduced range torpedoes, two dual vulcan turrets and a double shot particle PD gun.

Edit: And another one

Image

Two of the PD guns on limited arcs, 10 HVM's with a little bit of tracking and longer reload, and a nice big triple layered beam at the front, still not quite happy with the colouring of it though so shall have to fiddle. Oh and if the Missile silos get blown up you'll seen the beam generators underneath with a nice glow that can't be seen normally.

Basically the only problem with that ship is that it's too small, like its missng whole chunks of sections that could be easily place around it. You should start to add more sections onto it, because to me it doesn't look finished yet

Hmm i disagreed with you at first but more i look at it...maybe if the nose didn't narrow so much?

Anyway, new ship bumpity time!

Image

Little frigate, nice triple shot plasma ball launcher on the front, three twin SRM launchers, and a pair of flanking two shot PD guns.

i like the design styles. they're original but you can see definate form. my main critiscism for the most recent ships is the sprites you're using. They just look too flat for a good effect

Thanks! Yeah, many of them are sprites i've been running through the Shipwrightizator since i couldn't find them in SW on here (Don't worry authors, i'm not releasing any), so i need to spruce up my fine tuning of them, i just do them manually, but hopefully once i shade depth them it'll help the ship as a whole look less flat.

Edit: Ok lets try a destroyer then

Image

Linked twin and triple heavy autocannon turrets, two scatter Missile arrays, four point rockets mounted on the turrets, and 3 PD guns. The energy/power arrays on the sides are the same as what is covered by the Missile silos on the aforementioned frigate.

Edit: And another

Image

Broadsider with 6 twin particle rifle turrets, one triple vulcan turret and four particle PD guns. Also has two sets of power generators under the main body. Actually it's probably closer to a cruiser when compared to the other fleets, in size terms at least.

Edit Little gunboat

Image

Solely armed with a rapid fire light autocannon (reduced shrapnel, 32 mag) but is highly manueverable.

Edit: More gunboat armaments.

Image

Plasma flamer close range.

Image

Triple light torpedo.

Also noticing that these give a fairly balanced fight against my sharkesque fleet, but struggle to beat the modular fleet, with when only using the modular frigates!

Right, i'm leaving the current fleets behind since it'll take me a while to find a colour scheme. However i've realised how sloppy my sectioning has become, well it had never been great but anywho. So i decide to start a whole new ship without any goa of finishing it in one session. Still isn't coloured or anything yet but it's got all the basics.

Image

Some sort of cruiser, maybe battlecruiser. For weaponry it has two cruise missles at the front (HVR's), two bomb launchers on the front sides (Flash bolter technically), four railguns per side in an almost broadside layout, they are angled slightly forward with the sections, eight machine guns per side above the railguns, four limited arc point beams, six flak guns, 4 micro Missile arrays on the spine, and a twin heavy railgun turret with targeting laser. Also has a pair of gravity well projectors at the back (the thing with a bit of green on).

Well is it an improvement to my usual?

There is something appealing with the clean, obtuse shapes of your second last blue/gray ships. Their shapes flowed and it was easy to see what part of the ship was responsible for.

Your latest orange ship is a more busier, to the point where some parts of the ship with many guns and details are in contrast to some of the clearer areas. The stark contrast between these areas detract from the overall look.

If you wish to improve your section work, I would advise that you try to choose sections that can look 'natural' when place beside certain sections. Some of the section choices are placing clear sections right beside busy sections.

I suggest evening this out, unless you are attempting a completely different look than your second last set.

I do like that blue grey ship, almost every shape being a triangle or similar shape. Maybe if i show a stripped down version of that ship the contrast of busy and clear areas won't be as great.

Image

Better? I'm not against the contrast of busy and clear in the general design, but i agree that the weapons especially along the sides do get it to a point bordering on clutter :? I'll do a refitted version to try and keep it all clearer.

Edit: Assault Carrier refit and fighter-bomber.

Image

Image

The Assault Carrier has a twin explosive cannon turret, four heavy missile arrays, two explosive railguns, eight autoguns, sixteen anti fighter beams, and seventeen flak guns. Carrys 6 fighter-bombers equipped with a single torpedo launcher and two fighter sized light kinetic cannons.

Not sure if this is an improvement in keeping it clear but this is more just seeing where i want this fleet to go, since i'm quite keen to actually finish a fleet in entirety since i have failed to complete any yet. And yes i'm using meta 1 specs for the weapons but i haven't completely stuck within the threat limits...i.e. the first one has 8 railguns, of cost 75 when i have a total closer to 220-240 to play with, which wouldn't even get me four.

Ok, i was experimenting with substructures, which led me to make these.

Image

Image

Image

The fin like Dst_sw01's i've used as like cooling/heat sint vanes. Sections that are usually used as fuel rods/tanks i've used more like the actual corridors/rooms/etc of the ships. This however led me to how i would cover them, which made me realise no sprites i have will do the job i want and so i made my own :) !

Image

First test version of the corvette sized ship, rounded plating, small ablative armour plates around the nose to protect the guns, small flying bridge/observation deck (the command centre is the Horsemonster command module section visible in the substructure nicely out of harms way) the two sets of forward plates i've put flattened recesses mid way up for the gun placements. I'm kind of happy how it turned out, but it's more curvy than i first intended :? oh well. Oh almost forgot, the huge ship will be a supercarrier i think and the mid sized one is a frigate design.

Too much clutter on that largest one IMO.

Sectionwork is okay on the last ship, but it's just way too high contrast. Not your fault necessarily, it's just that the sprites are originally somewhat contrasted. My eyes are bleedin' a little. Parts of it could be separated out and made into a good space base.

The first two are okay, but the contrast is still getting me. I like the previous cyan/white ships better.

The last one is too rounded; It looks more like a flying blob than a real spaceship. Outline it with some sprites?

Looking again at the big ship i just can't figure out how i went so overboard with everything...it was originally a normal carrier less than half that size...i've added sections just all over the place, i mean yeah it's a substructure but blimey! I'll fix it though with my new found inspiration to do good! I don't know what happened with the corvette armour, i never wanted anything to be rounded expect perhaps the nose, i blame sleep deprivation. Also on the sprite contrast, it's a miracle i made these without going blind, i must of had my screen brightness down at the time or something. Anyway these were just an experiment, i'll send the workers back to the forge to bash out some new armour plates that're nice whilst i just think how i can fix this up to a better standard. Oh and thanks for the C&C, the base idea is something i'll consider too

Edit: Ok tried to sort out clutter on the large ship and show a stripped down version close to my original idea before i went mad with power over it.

Image

Image

Any better?

Edit: Ok i redid the corvette with standard sprites, before i try my own again i'm gonna sketch out the ship i want first instead of just making stuff in paint straight away, however i think how this one came out is ok.

Image

Also the internals are shaded a bit too, everything just grey scale for the mo.

Image

Edit: Frigate innards shaded up

Image

I think i'll keep the innards monotone unless i can think of something good, but i do intend to have fully coloured ships after i play about with translating tones onto colours.

Edit: Escort carrier innards shaded

Image

Think i'll do the frigate next rather than shading the supercarrier just so you have something actually interesting to look at.

Edit: Haven't quite finished with the frigate so i'll show an unshaded innards of a light cruiser i just mocked up.

Whilst thinking unproductively about the previous ships and etc i knocked this out.

Image

No shading or colour yet, will do that next. It's got a big kinetic cannon based off a tac nuke with the bullet sprite being a brownish shrunk HM realistic sprite, the one that looks like the top of an old saturn rocket. The two hangars in the middle are drone bays, just to try them out instead of making fighters for a change.

Edit: One without weapons so you can see the hull uninterrupted.
