Just a wip so show you i am doing something productive in between getting shipbuilder's block on arming the cruiser...

Image

This isn't a finished hull obviously, still have to flesh it out alot, however i like how that because of how in between each turret section it goes into the centre line sharply, as if even those section are modular in themselves, e.g. you could take a couple out and have a nice pocket battleship, or put some more in and make a dreadnought or supercarrier. Well as in i think this is a battleship but maybe it's closer to dreadnought size, hmm...i'm just glad i managed to get default zoom for you's by taking two screenshots and a little editing in paint :). Oh and the front part is just like the superstructure, it'll be covered up by prettier sections lol

Edit: Also just noted that at this wip stage it looks like the head of a sawfish lolol

Image

Edit: Update and idea...
Image
Just outlined the main body and a little touch here and there. And as for the idea, i thought of instead of having just one turret on each small circular mounting there's space for two! You just have to look carefully, under and over!!
Image
From the side. I won't do this kind of thing for the bigger guns cause..well..it'd just be stupid :P

Whoa. That's a pretty interesting ship.
The shape doesn't appeal to me but I generally am not a fan of super long ships. The section usage is actually very good but it just looks cluttered and not good because there is virtually no depth. If you added "darks" and "lights"in your grays, it would really help the ship.
This has potential. Keep it up man.

That is really cool. One thing for the upper-side/under-side idea. If you go for that idea, I'd recommend doubling the amount of shots fired out each time the turret fires. You know, to actually show that there is another identical set of guns beneath.

I don't think the sectionwork is actually very good at all.
The individual units are nice, but they're repeated far too many times.

I'm hoping that once i've filled in the depth and gaps that the repetition will be less obvious, since in the first wip it's horrendously bad and blatant, but i think it gets a little bit better in the second one with just a few added sections. Also the sections on the edge of the ship will be replaced with something better, i just used the first decent one i came across to show what the shape is working towards. Also as a side note i notice that praise is easy to come by whereas specific criticism is harder to get, so thanks for the repetition and depth comments, however i've had a breakthrough with the colour scheme and so depth will be sorted shortly :). The repetition though...well i'll have to work it out of the design.

Edit A sample of my shading and colouring.

Haha i'm literally working on them now as you speak! Half way through the piddly ships :)

Edit Here they are!

Plus basic hull and stripped hull versions for good measure!

Image
Image

All have matching thrusters/exhausts, and i changed glowy things, shields, boosters, etc, to more complementary colours :D.

Edit: And in all their ingame glory

Image

Tried to set aegis glow to a pale creamy colour but defaulted back to white for some reason, and can't change shock beamer glow :(

Edit: Ok and now for everything else :)

Hope you's like it :).

Edit Tweaked the big un's bow colours ever so slightly

Image

Just using an extra green i'd forgotten about that was in reserved for the bigger ships for when i run out of enough shades.

Edit: More progress on the huge ship.

Image

More engine detail, longer tail bits, and alot on the sides. I want to find a larger circle sprite instead of stretching the one i have but haven't seen any :(. Also thinking now that for the nose to flow properly i'll have to add another module on bringing the sides closer into the middle.

Edit: Made a battlecruiser out of the cruiser.

Image

A tad more armour and 5 more gun emplacements.

Edit: More progress on the dreadnought.
Image

Broadside gun emplacements finished, side flak emplacements finished (figured out if you use a custom sprite on point defence that'd normally have an unchangeable 360 arc, SM suddenly forgets this and allows you to change it :)) and centre spine put in place with heavy turret mountings. Also i found by using the long middle pieces back to back that it looked like the link between each module, with the original centres as bracing support or whatever. All that's left is to cover the middle, do the nose and colour the damned things. Oh also thinking the the nose will be a special module like on the front of the piddly ships.

Also as a head's up i'll be using this frame for all my big capital ships, so 6 modules, dreadnought/supercarrier; 4 modules, battleship/carrier; 3 modules, pocket battleship/escort carrier.

I liked your smaller ships alot more then the larger ones, as they got quite cluttered. Very well thought out variations of the same ship too.

The huge ship's back is just... a massive tangle of mecha sprites.

@LT: Yeah i know it's a mess, i'm going to go back to it though, i knew the size and shape i wanted for it but the only thing that went right was the engines and the side prongs.

@Droid: Well i've found that when i try to cut out repetition i start to make things cluttered and and vice versa. Tbh i've gotten the effect i wanted, but it's bugged me, so i'd just blagged to myself that it was the whole 'modular' theme, since i couldn't think of any decent ideas after flicking through what must be every SW sprite in existence. Please you've got the criticism spot on but if you had any advice or ideas yourself it'd be much appreciated. Otherwise i'll just have to make it a separate full C&C thread.

Oh and since i'm not getting any 'Arggghhh my eyes!' comments the green mustn't be as much of an eyeburn i was worrying it might be.

Hmmm...
You could definitely use more different sections for the centerline, and use different sections to cover up some of the repetition. It's already kinda cluttered, and I think swapping some sections for other, less-detailed ones (particularly stuff like kae-gnr2 pack) would help reduce clutter.

Ok thanks. I did go throught the gnr2 sprites whilst looking at redoing the engine parts, but thought they were too flat for it...however, they may by perfect to cover up the internal plate things to either side of the centre. I do have a feeling now this ship is going to be far more work than i first thought, but it's work that'll achieve a much better product, and the SM isn't really work, more an enjoyment so. And the centre line i'll just scrap and start and, since the main body is parented onto the original two more substantial centres.

Edit: Ok big ship is now undergoing a total refit. Will not reappear here until it is nice.

Right, just a few random ships i've made.

Image

A little gunboat, of which the central green section is driven, with the main gun and side engines parented to it.

Image

Frigaty thing, has an anitmatter bomb at the front, just a big flash bolter really, just for laughs.

Image

I dunno frigate gunboat whatever. Nothing special.

Image

Jumble of mecha. Literally built by opening alot of mecha sprites that look like the could fit together in a massive cluster and moved them around a bit. Not a good ship but some of the shapes interest me enough to show it.

Image

First of new style of glassy core. Built on the principle of i wanted to make a large class ship, cruiser or whatever, but just keep the scale down.

Image

Very basic, mainly made to have fun with plasma launchers with long ranges.

Image

Nice little ship. Pretty Doodads for engine glow/coolant or whatever.

Image

Simply a weird shape.

Image

Another little one. Bigger glassy core this time.

Image

And finally another gunboat type thing. I rather like the shape and etc of this one.

Just to show i haven't been killed by the repetition monster. Well...much. Lol

Are those glassy cores custom-drawn? They're awsome-looking.

But onto more important things. The important things is that all these ships don't have much repetition, if any. If you could apply this sort of styling to that big-ass ship, it would improve a lot.

A carrier i made today.
Image

The pink glows at the front is more for showing that there are a pair of megabeams there. Has the green engine/coolant doodads as on the smaller ship. The extra side thrusters are all 360 driven so to appear like manuvering thrusters. First ship for a long time that i've bothered to change the stats from default hestia. Ever so tempted to call it the Hammerhead lol.

Anywho, the fighters it carries.
Image

Ain't it cute lol. Decided to give them a point gun as well as the two gat. pulse guns so they won't always be blown up by the debris of their kill.

And a last minute thought of inspiration, a cruiser variant of the carrier.

Image

Cut out the hangers etc and added two quad anti fighter beam turrets and a pair of light beamers to add to the forward firepower.

Edit: More fighters

Image

A torpedo bomber.

Image

And a minibeamer.

Carrier currently has one group each of these plus two of the standard pulse ones.

Edit: Pocket Battleship

Image

Tac nukes and repeating artill at front, railguns, torps, and flak down the sides, and the normal flak at the back.

Edit: Slight revision, a tad more armour on the sides.

Image

Edit: Missile Cruiser/Destroyer, maybe a tad too powerful, either that or the other things are underpowered :S.

Image

Edit: Destroyer. Medium beamer, particle cannon, two gatling beams, and two twin anti fighter beams, plus three dual flak.

Image

Edit: Friiigarrrt. Twin front light beams, sabot cannon, two gatling blasters, and one twin flak.

Image

Edit: Beam frigate. One heavy gatling beamer replaces the two light beams and the sabot.

Image

Edit: Corvette. One quad anitfighter beam turret and two gatling blasters.
