Make small ships, take a picture, then make it a sprite.

I and shift+I to shrink, K and shift+K to make it bigger.

You could just zoom out really far and take a screenshot or shrink said screenshot in photoshop. Really now, it's quite simple to figure out.

It's a box. It needs little wings. Any one of your cute baby ships would look good as a fighter.

About your Carrier, try adding some engines at the back that way it may look much better.
Make your fighter smaller (try making all sections to .20 size and zoom in and after your done return to default zoom)

Cryo, its much easier to reduce its size in an image editor, don't you think?
