Those first two ships are actually quie good, they have a nice shape, and good section placement. You should change the shading to the first ship, but apart from that, they're good.
That last ship is...hmmm. The shape is okay, but the back half needs more work, more detailed sprites. The front is fine.

Thanks. I'm especially proud of the Odin. I don't know why, I just am. I like it's shape (not to toot my own horn, I only really make a rough outline in my mind, and even then I'm not above tossing it if I notice something I like in the shape).
I'll see about the Berserkr. I assumed the front would gain more flak for being rather bug-like. When you say back, do you mean in general or like the spinal part of it? Or the engines?

More Double-posting.
Anyway, just made another ship, more of a spur of the moment thing. If anyone has ever played Escape Velocity Nova, they'd know what I was talking about when I said that this drew some inspiration from the Kestrel (a very sexy if ridiculously overpriced ship, I'll admit) at first, but later on it gained an identity of it's own. I'm still working on the name; and the arms, of course, I don't care for as I was concentrating on the main hull. Might axe them. I'm considering deleting them, but I wouldn't know what to replace them. I'm thinking about reversed wings in the style of the SU-27 Berkut. Anyway, onto the ship.

How so? I wanted the ship to be dark-colored, basically as close to black I can while making it still practically visible. It might look better in game, I guess. (in my opinion, glow doesn't look overly bad with SW-style ships if set to black, if I pretend it's light reflecting off the ship or some shit)HorseMonster wrote:Don't tell Lactose that I said this, but extremely dark shading looks awful.

Might be just personal opinion, in the end, but admittedly, I like the coloring. Though I know some people would differ (hard to see in the Big Black, aft all).

There's nothing wrong with the very dark shading, it's just that if it's too dark, nobody can actually see any details, and therefore nobody can catually tell wether it's good or bad
For your ship, I think the shading is fine, I can see the ship pretty clearly

I can actually relate. It might be the arms. I was originally basing this off EV Nova's Kestrel, which IMO shows itself in the nose. But I eventually RetConned the idea. The arms are a kludge and I honestly don't like them, so I'm most likely going to delete them and go for a swept-forward wings look. The back was a bit of the same, and the two last sections are next to invisible in that pic. It looks better, in game, of course, in a rare case of Glow doing it's job (maybe shimmer or something, not sure). So far I changed the weapons load-out to make it more formidable (it's supposed to be able to fight an Odin and win easily, basically kind of an assassin/lightly-armored warship, even more so than the Berserkr). I don't want to scrap the design,as I like the nose, so if worse comes to worst I'll delete the back parts and store the file somewhere until I regain some inspiration.Zardian wrote:uber dark shading is bad but this isnt that case, i feel that the shading is just fine but i do however feel like theres something ackward about the shape..
it doesn't seem to have a good flow or something, can't quite point out whats bugging me tho.

Finally got my old account at Photobucket working, and I'm finally rebuilding the lost Hades, although it'ss go by a different name, seeing as it will most likely belong to a different faction. Likely the Dark Union (the owner of the previous dark ship). Pix should be more stable from now on, and I'll repost some of the older ones on the first page. The red parts are a marker for me. The ship is meant to be much smaller, and when put on the field, it skips a beat or two and deploys to a magnificent (compared to it's contemporaries) ass-kicking bastard. When I'm done, this bitch will rip any pirate (the ones posted here) apart as if they didn't exist. For the moment, this is just a skeleton. Starting frame outwards.
Lastly, please note again that the red parts are to be removed when the whole is done. Also, since this was taken, I adjusted it a bit to eliminate any overtly visible error in section placement (being a few pixels off like the last red one in the back).
EDIT: IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIVVEEE!! The Duskhammer (name is still pending, this will do for the time being) is ready to bring the fight to the enemy!

Undeployed. Quaint, even sort of cute, in a macabre sort of way. No way this stubby little ship can...

Oh... shit...
My only regret is that there is no way I could possibly test this behemoth. It's too damn big for my comp to handle. Oh well, it was fun to build and I'll keep it around. Maybe give it a spin anyway. I'm still not done arming it of course.

Section placement is... unusual. As in, I don't really like how some of the sections are stacked on top of each other, it looks messy. Except for the front, that part is okay.
You should try to fill in the gaps in the ship, the areas where you can see the background. It's also a bit dark, but it's not that bad

Some of it admittedly looks messy zoomed out that far. I'm guessing you mean the section 16's?Imaillusion wrote:Section placement is... unusual. As in, I don't really like how some of the sections are stacked on top of each other, it looks messy. Except for the front, that part is okay.

Snipped straight from a story I was writing (which these are based on. Partially to help me visualize what the characters are piloting...

Thor-class Missile FrigateLeodogan and Selira’s own ship was a heavily modified version of the Thor class of Missile Frigates. It was a misleading title, as a Thor was about the size of a dreadnought. The Thor class was built for long-rage engagements, and had missile pods all over it’s keel as well as some torpedo launchers to give it some serious heat. Leodogan and Selira’s variant, dubbed the Ephidna, which was Rhonik for Wolverine, was a very different animal. Instead of the regular variety of torpedoes it had EMP torpedo tubes (which were very illegal in most governments), an improved keel with much heavier armor, better missile pods, improved engines and two more Autocannon batteries. All in all, it was superior to it’s sisters and it’s construction gave Leodogan and Selira both a reputation as gifted ship designers.
