Looking for constructive criticism...

Post by jdmls729 »

Hello. I'm new here, and have very little experience with the Ship Maker.
My newest ship, the Aesich Cruiser, is still a WIP (No weapons, as you can see) and the first real project I've taken on...
Looking for your opinion.

Thanks very much for any feedback.

...Its not looking really good at the moment, I'm afraid. Apart from the fact that your only using stock sections, it also looks really cluttered and messy, and I doubt you really planned how the ship would look. You're probaly better off trying to build something a bit smaller so you get more experience, for the time being

Ok. And yeah, I never really know what it's going to look like at the end...
You think it would be better if I used SWA sprites?
And I was sort of looking for ways I could improve it.

But thanks for your input.

JD, just a note, you don't have to use SWA sprites. Generally, SWA ships are a lot prettier and the sprites are easier to work with, but if you look in the Beauty Pageant, there's proof that some stock style ships can be gorgeous as well. IMO, if you develop skills with stock sections first and then move on to SWA, it makes you a better ship-builder, but naturally, do what suits you.

As for the ship itself, I see a lot of interesting section usage that I like, particularly the "spikes" coming off the middle near the aft, the overall flow of the main sections, and the slight angle of the "wings" (though I think if you angled the entire "wing" and not just the front 3 sections it would look a lot better).

The main thing here is to color it besides stock green (grey with shading is usually a safe opener that you can always change later). Generally, once it's colored, the more subtle issues with the design come to light that can't be seen in monotone green.

Also worth keeping in mind that SWA-style ships can be awful if made badly. SWA isn't an automatic path to awesome ships.

So far... I'm not sure I like the ship, personally, but overall it's a decent bit better than some of the stock-type ships we see posted.

I actually think this ship is pretty decent for a beginner, the stock green has to go but other than that you show good section usage, obviously there's a few small faults like the round sections you've used on the back of the engine pods and the non angled sections on top of them amongst mirroring errors at the front but other than that its not half bad, On the subject of SWA it is awesome hat we've come so far through stock TSA, and now shiny <3, but STARSTRUCKS stock entry in the beauty pageant is just lovely better than alot of SWA ships out there, and as far as im concerned proof that stock isn't dead just yet.

Like the other ship that I've seen you make I think personally, that it is very delicate. For one the ship is in a very nice form for its pieces, two the backbone pieces near the back of the ships wings, give it such a fragile frame, and a very conspicuous* feeling to it. If anything i might give it a 8.3 out of ten just for its overall message that it give out.

Thank you Jak, and the ship (as I would agree with paul) does need some more colour on it. I mean everything is really good looking and has perfect shape for its pieces, but colour would have it look way better. And I know that this is nearly impossible but, try converrting it to SWA, I know it would take a long time, but it might pay off. And that's a BIG BUT.

Paul add me please!
