WFTU - Novian ambush, Target: Ratai Sleeper-ship

Post by Necrontyr1998 »

After refining the rules a bit in our last battle lets try another battle R0ni.

The story so far....
Spoiler!
Once again their lust for knowledge and tech has driven the 'Novian' empire to lash out as their galactic neighbours. Angered by their forced retreat from 'Daike', they seek retribution on those who stood in their way. War was declared on the 'Ratai' the moment their last ship left 'Nove sector' after the invasion and the Novian council were enraged by the destruction of the Gre'kt system. Now Nove is on the move again.

Novian recon ships have reported a large convoy of Ratai ships moving through the neutral space of the 'Grawl sector'. Perfect for an ambush as there are no Installations that they could run to. The fact that a Ratai 'sleeper-ship' was to be numbered among the convoy peeked Nove's interest. Cryo technology was limited due to its difficulty to manufacture and an easy to produce design such as the Ratai's was much sought after. Not to mention what the Novians could learn from the souls in stasis. This was to be the target and revenge!
Rules
Spoiler!
-Fleets can move one system per turn (and split).
-There is no reinforcements for either side.
-Ships that need repairing must remain in a system with a supply ship for 1 turn.
-Fighters/bombers are replaceable.
-Systems cannot be claimed (no mines or sentry guns).
-No running from impending battles.
-If a battle takes place, the attacking player must post the enc. file.
-Players place their own fleets in enc. files.
-Damaged ships cannot join battle in next turn until repaired.
-Supply ships can only repair 3 ships (of the players choice) at a time.
-The sleeper-ship itself doesn't take part in battles (We want it alive!)

Any more?
Victory conditions:

Novian victory:
-The sleeper-ship is captured in battle and at least 3 ships classed cruiser or higher escape the sector afterwards.

Ratai victory:
-Novian forces are neutralised or forced to retreat.

The map and starting positions:
Spoiler!

Well, this looks acceptable thing. Sleeper ships are very valuable for Ratai, especially the Keeper of Memories with highest soul count (~10000), so least that mammoth of a ship will remain right between Andarra and Baurus (the two forgery ships) at core fleet (which is orbiting Arime right now in Mioran sector.) - but I could... toss in little smaller sleeper ship. ~2000 souls big, with pretty much the same tech as the Keeper. I need Keeper of memories intact later for comic.

What kind of forces would there be? Since its civilian fleet for Ratai, I think there will be high number of Mover freighters. Depending on how large the fleet is, it dictates the size of escort fleet. There will be least one battle carrier as command ship and if there is supply ship - then another battlecarrier just for it's escort alone, so my starting fleet would be least 2+ battlecarriers (Small to mid variant) + their escorts + escorts of the x number of civilian ships. (o. O )

Edit: won't be mega active over weekend, so I think we can start this by monday.

Sure, that's cool. I'll wait for you to post you fleet first though (I don't want to over cook the big ships for this battle).

Well, big ship wise my biggest would white star - as Orentis class is rare bring-firepower-where-needed kind of ship - not meant for escort.

Im just throwing number now, but would this be kk?

Command group:
1x White star BCV (Command ship)
1x Guardian CA (Main escort ship for battlecarrier)
3x Teus DD (secondary escort for battlecarrier)
~2-5 Chasers or Hammerhead MK2s FG (for fleet wide patrols)

Supply group:
1x Overseer BCV (Supply ship escort)
1x Guardian CA (main escort)
2x Teus DD (secondary escort for battlecarrier)
1x Oracle (Fleet supply ship)
2-3 Chasers or Hammerhead mk2s (additional escort for supply ship)

Civilian main group (sleeper ship.)
8x Mover Civ-CL (armed freighters)
1x Sleeper ship (small)
1x Dragonfly light cruiser (Main civilian escort due to its pro point defence systems)
2x Teus class (secondary escort)
2-5 Chasers or hammerhead MK2's for fleet wide patrols.
~some civilian ships just for show - not armed or very lightly armed.

Recon group:
1x Angel class DD

Also, since battlecarriers are present, would 1 wing (4 ships) of interceptors at start for civilian groups be kk -EVEN if battlecarrier is not present in battle since the carriers would actively send patrols to fly with the civilian ships?

Yes that would be fine:

Would this be ok as my fleet?

Total:
2x 'Atheist' Battlecarrier
10x 'Salvation' Heavy cruiser
10x 'Sanguine' medium frigate
15x 'Spather' Medium corvette
1x Freighter (as supply ship)

Hmm, I guess that can be alright. Im bit worried about the number of beam weapons though, as 2-3 Salvations or sanguines firing at one of my destroyers can pretty much instantly destroy it. Can I buff my fleet slightly with 3 Destroyers, 2 Frigates and 1 cruiser so that it looks like this.

1x White star BCV
1x Overseer BCV
2x Guardian CA
2x Dragonfly CL
8x Mover Civ-CL (armed freighters)
1x Sleeper ship (small)
10x Teus class DD
1x Angel class DD
15x Chasers or hammerhead MK2's

= 33 combat able ships + Supply ship + ~some civilian ships just for show - not armed or very lightly armed.

Against yours:

2x 'Atheist' Battlecarrier
10x 'Salvation' Heavy cruiser
10x 'Sanguine' medium frigate
15x 'Spather' Medium corvette
1x Freighter (as supply ship)

= 37 combat able ships + supply ship.

Sure. Could you post your fleet positions first, it would make sense that Nove knew before hand since this is an ambush.

Novian turn 1

AMBUSH!
Spoiler!
Commodore Rem'lk stood proud at the command dais. Warm steam from a nearby humidifier ruffled his robes like some Terran battle hero. 'Urema' had earn't him many scars, but also a promotion for his tactical skill in the destruction of a 'Ratai' fleet. Now it was time for Nove to strike back. 37 ships were placed under his command to orchestrate the mission, a mission to hit the Ratai where it hurt. It seem's a fitting punishment for the destruction of the 'Gre'kt' data core's. The bridge chronometer chimed the call of death, it was time to go to war.

Re: WFTU - Novian ambush, Target: Ratai Sleeper-ship

Post by R0ni »

I know that you know..
Spoiler!
The novians had definately planned their ambush well, but the cruicial part of it unfortunately failed at the very beginning - the element of surprise. While Ratai possibly appeared relatively low tech for their enemy, there were some tricks they still could pull back from old days. -one such were miniture propes, only several pounds heavy, and few dozen centimeters across that Ratai used to monitor space around their high priority ships. One such vessel was the Unix - small sleeper ships with roughly three thousand souls onboard and serving as preserver as well as trade hub for civilian group 92.

The probes Ratai had deployed were hyperspace capable, but that did not make them anyhow high tech. What was inside the probes, their sensor and especially their communication equipment, allowed Ratai to monitor space around them lightyears across in real time - information travelling back and forth instantly. This was possible due to laws of physics known as quantum mechanics as humans called it, and more specifically the quantum entanglement - an link between two sub atomic particles that allowed information to travel faster than speed of light - instantly no matter the distance. The probes had been designed to be almost invicible to near any means of detection, and they could easily hide in asteroid fields or in low orbit around planets to hide themselves, monitoring the system jump nodes and transmitting their data to Ratai fleet. Best of all was that this form of communication could not be detected by any means, as the communication happened instantly - no travel time or any data to intercept ever existing from begin with.

As the Novians approached, Ratai were closely watching their fleet moves in situation room. While it was certainly interesting to follow Novian fleet movement, it still did not take out the fact that the Ratai fleet was by no means capable of fighting enemy force this sizeable.

--

"Sir, fourth fleet has been detected, also on intercept course. They definately know we are here." -young liutanent forwarded his findings from tactical board to the commander.

"Let me see that."
-Another voice spoke, but not the commander. It was the Executive officer, Major Feren. The old Veteran sure was past his golden days, and propably had been assigned to the current ship for what could be called smooth landing to retirement. Novians however were seemingly going to ruin his last years of more action free service. He eyed the tactical board for a moment, looking at the current distances, the overall force ratios and how far the fleet could run before being intercepted. The results were not that bright. The civilian fleet would not be able to run from the Novians even at best - especially with the gigantic freighters that required mind bogging two hours to charge their hyperspace core. TWO HOURS. The XO had seen lot of Ratai ships that were crap, but that kind of jump clock was hilarious. "We can't run them.."

"Yirui, are you listening?" -He spoke again, words meant for the commander. At the same time he dismissed the liutanent with simple gesture by his hand. The liutanent first took an look at CO, as if waiting for him to dismiss him, but as the commander did not react, he left. The liutanent did notice that Feren spoke very casually to his superior officer. Either he was bold - even with such age difference he had over the CO, or the two were friends and thus used no formalities.

"Yirui?" -The Major spoke again, this time raising his voice some.

"Im thinking."
-The commander finally replied, his gaze still remaining on the window, as it had been for past several minutes. He knew very well that the civilian fleet was boxed, that they would not be able to run, unless they abandoned their slowest ships - and even then just maybe. "I wonder how they know.."

"They don't know that we know - and that is advatange."

"If we change course, then they will know that we know."

"Yirui, I know what you are thinking, but.."
"Oh, do you?" -The commander cut in. From the tone the two spoke to each other, it was becoming quite obvious that they knew one another from long time. "Look there. That ship must make it even if none else does. Im not going to risk it." -The commander pointed forward, to the window and the sleeper ship that was floating just past the carrier.

"If we keep our current course they will intercept us with larger force and the sleeper ship won't make it. We need to cut their numbers somehow." The XO told his view, and to further persuade it through, added. "One way or another, we are going to take casualities."

"I am well aware of that.. and I don't plan just flying idle, waiting them to jump on us.. Its just.. depending on what decisions I make now will cost maybe lives of thousands or even us all. I want to be sure that decision I make is the best one.."
Yirui sighed and turned towards the tactical board, XO following.

"Are you not confident in yourself? I can tell you th.." -Major asked. Standing on the opposite side of the board from the commander.

-"don't start with your bullshit stories again, Feren. Im fine. Really." Yirui almost smiled as he spoke. Taking good look at the board once more.

"That bullshit is called experience, Yirui"

"No, you are still the same Feren you were back in days we both were young. Now only I am young and you look like shit."
-The commander mocked, a playful smirk appearing on his face.

"Ouch, that actually hurt my feelings now..." -The XO frowned back. His tone did not sound that hurt however. This propably was old joke.

"These.."
-Yirui pointed the two ships that represented Novian battlecarriers on the map. "We can't let two of them engage us in same battle. If that happens, we're screwed."

"Go on." -The XO approved thus far, letting Yirui work on his plan.

"We could engage the other one either there... or there..." -The commander pointed two different systems on the map. "With any luck it is their command ship. What does your.. more experienced eye say to this?" -Yirui leaned forward towards the board, eyeing at his XO who in turn looked at the map, concidering the options Yirui had just presented. After concidering a while, he nodded and thus it was decided. The fleet would turn around - and Novians would definately know that Ratai know..
