The Vol'Nir Federation

Post by Skrim »

Here is the faction around which my present fleet is based. It exists in the MRA universe, and the storyline is based on the To'Hol Venaari and Scourge storylines.

The Vol'Nir Federation

*Civilization statistics not yet available*

The Vol'Nir are remotely cat-like tailless bipedal mammals who shared their homeworld with a reptilian sentient species until the To'Hol Venaari arrived. The xenophobic race did not revere the Technocracy as they expected, and their home planet was destroyed. Some part of the population escaped on a lone ship and went on a millenia-long exodus to the Milky Way Galaxy, where they are now building themselves into a galactic civilization in their own right.

As individuals, their majority are morose and serious in nature, and many of them prefer musical and culinary arts over other art forms. They are interstellar traders, as well as big-time capitalists with a developed consumer economy. The Vol'Nir are also focussed on improving their technology. Being a young civilization(although actually very old, most of their development was wiped out and they spent ages during their exodus), the Vol'Nir still have somewhat primitive tech, but they use whatever they have creatively.

Here is the actual, detailed backstory as told by VNF Ambassador and galactic historian Korik'Sor:
"Our world, Quta, was mostly aquatic, not unlike the famous planet Earth which has given rise to so many successful galactic civilizations. However, our planet had only 2 continents, 2 large continents. On them, 2 very different kinds of sentient being would arise - we, the Vol'Nir on the continent of Vol, and the Dros'Nir(what we called them), on the continent of Dros.

The Dros'Nir were monsters, similar to the mythical dragons of Earth folklore. They were huge, more than twice as tall as the average Vol'Nir individual. They could fly, but only slowly and over short distances. They were as intelligent as we were, if not more. They were fewer in number - their population always being about 40% of ours. For thousands of years, we did not know of them, and they did not know of us - for we were seperated by the great oceans.

With time and progress, we reached a level of technological development similar to 17th Century Earth, and the great explorers of our species began voyages across the seas of our planet. The Dros'Nir did the same thing, at the same time. As if by chance, the Dros'Nir and us had reached the same level of enlightenment in the same epoch. Of course, we and they did not get along well - them being ritualistic, highly religious, fiercely territorial reptiles, we being mammals similar to the humans. We(the Dros'Nir and us) fought long and brutal wars against one another for the next 2 centuries, by which time we were able to understand each other to some extent. Exhausted by the war, the civilizations of our planet tried to live peacefully, in harmony with each other, but the mutual xenophobia lingered throughout.

Technology progressed again with time, and we arrived at a critical point similar to Earth's 20th century - both of our species, within 10 years of one another, had invented the nuclear bomb. An arms race started, but more intense than that of any other pre-galactic civilization, for we were not just one species divided, but 2 utterly different kinds of beings. Soon, we both began touching the boundaries of space, sending satellites into the orbit of our planet - but not weather or commercial satellites. Instead, we sent up spy satellites, and it was not long before nuclear missile silos began appearing in our orbit. Our planetary ecosystem was degenerating, but we blamed it on the Dros'Nir, and they blamed it on us.

Inevitably, tensions rose. Our civilizations were on the verge of ripping each other apart and converting our planet into a lifeless radioactive hell. But something else attacked first... something which we did not know of, and had not seen. They were 'The Aliens'. Naturally, we thought the Dros'Nir had attacked, and war broke out. A 3-way war ensued, and in under 3 hours, 80% of our world had been rendered uninhabitable or captured by mysterious Alien war machines.

Then, the war stopped. The Aliens thwarted every attempt our two puny races made to attack each other. They themselves were invincible, and seemingly magical. The Aliens, I now think, realized that the inhabitants of our planet would destroy each other without their aide. They proposed that we surrender to their cause, and connect ourselves to something they called a "Hive Mind". Our terrified leaders agreed. But it seems the Dros'Nir did not. For they were never seen again. Their continent remained scarred, desolate and completely barren. Not a single being of the Dros'Nir species was ever found, although their skulls lay strewn where their cities used to be.

The Aliens gave us the technology to go faster than light, something our physicists had thought of as impossible. They also gave us several other technologies. They demanded only that we "become one" with them, and left a device that would integrate us into a "Hive Mind" should we touch it. Stunned by the series of events and the sudden nonexistence of the Dros'Nir, we did not know what to do.

We tried to explore space using the Alien technology, and discovered other species that had been visited by the Aliens, and integrated into Hive Minds. From them, we also learned of civilizations similar to the Dros'Nir, which had rejected the Alien proposal, and which no longer existed.

Thanks to our inborn sense of xenophobia, we were scared to join the Aliens, but just as terrified to think what would happen if we did't. We made a decision at last: we would build an FTL colony vessel and evacuate as many of us as possible to a distant spiral galaxy where we hoped that the Aliens would not find us. On the eve of it's launch, the Aliens' attention fell upon us once more. Now, since we had not followed their orders, they planned to punish us as they had done the Dros'Nir. But, they told us, we would have it worse.

Before long, some kind of gigantic spacecraft appeared in our orbit and began charging some kind of weapon. We knew what was coming. We knew what would happen. But our measly armed forces, using technology the Aliens had given us, managed to distract them just long enough for the colony ship to escape into hyperspace. That was the end of Quta. That was nearly the end of our civilization...

For thousands of years, even though it was able to travel 'faster than light', our vessel creeped towards the distant galaxy. Only it's engines and the stasis chambers containing the remnants of our population remained active. Nearing the spiral galaxy, it's warp engines gave out and the ship fell back into normal space. But, as if by miracle, we happened to crash land on a lush planet inhabited only by plants and small animals, which we now call "Quta Nova".

Over the next few hundred years, we rebuilt from scratch. We built villages, then towns, then cities. We expanded again into space. We met a friendly trading civilization who call themselves the Onooinen, and began conducting interstellar trade for the first time. Soon after, we met several other independent and flourishing civilizations and began establishing colonies in our own little corner of the galaxy.

We have since gotten over our xenophobia and chaotic history, and become members of the galactic society, of a galaxy to which we are not native. We too, like everyone else, were hit by the Plague and participated in the efforts to try and cure it. But now, the Aliens have arrived again, and their intentions are not good. Our civilization has seen a ridiculous number of absurd coincidences, and now, we are about to face yet another..."
Ships of the Vol'Nir Federation Star Navy(WIP):

Gladius Light Bomber Starbomber

Image

This light starbomber is in fact an unmanned drone ship. Heavier than a Draco drone but much lighter than any other class of warship, the Gladius is no threat at all in small numbers. In swarms, however, it can wreak havoc on larger targets with it's lightweight antimatter-warhead torpedoes. It is, unfortunately, too inaccurate to be effective against other small fighter craft in any number.

The Gladius' very light armor, weak engine and short-ranged weapon mean that it is also a very easy target for vessels of any size, and hence, it is usually used as a disposable distraction. It's aided in this role with it's light PD gun.

Main Armament:
-2 Antimatter Torpedo Launchers

Defensive Systems:
-Frontal ablative armor.
-1 Point-Defense Particle Gun

Karbonis Gunship Corvette

Image

The Karbonis Gunship is an aging corvette design and was the first space warship to be built by the VNFSN, primarily used to repel pirate attacks and patrol trade routes. It's subsystems are largely obsolete, but it's armament and armory have been modernized over the years to keep it in effective service.

Due to it's simplicity, it has been mass-produced extensively and constitutes to almost half of the VNFSN's total numerical strength.

Main Armament:
-2 Nimbus Plasma-Shooters

Defensive Systems:
-Frontal ablative armor
-2 Point-Defense Particle Guns

Karbonis Bombardier Bombardment Ship

Image

The Karbonis Bombardier is a unique corvette in that it is not the usual highly agile close-range gunfighter. Rather, it is a bombardment platform on a corvette hull, modified from the Karbonis Gunship.

It's main armament is it's 4 Angel Missile Launchers, which fire heavy antimatter-warhead missiles capable of breaking through even capital-grade shielding with their two-stage blast:
first, the containment chamber breaks and releases the antimatter into the charged particles forming the shield layer. The ensuing annihilation reaction generates a massive secondary explosion of high-energy photons which melt through the target's hull with more efficiency than a megalaser.

Main Armament:
-4 Angel Antimatter Missile Launchers

Defensive Systems:
-Frontal ablative armor
-4 Point-Defense Particle Guns

Drathis Drone-Host Light Carrier

Image

This carrier is unlike other carriers in that it is not a capital ship, rather, it is a destroyer-class vessel. Although very lightly armored, it's maneuverability and long-range weaponry more than make up for it. After launching a devastation-inducing swarm of "Draco" high-endurance drones, the Drathis itself stands back behind the front lines and bombards it's target with Stormbringer-Tempest Artillery Missiles.

Should it ever get caught at close range, it deploys it's Micro Warp Engine and escapes. This makes the Drathis a very slippery target, and a perfect solo raider.

Main Armament:
-4 Draco Drone Hangars fielding 7 Draco drones each
-6 Stormbringer-Tempest Artillery Missile Launchers

Defensive Systems:
-6 Point Defense Particle Guns
-Micro Warp Engine

Zealis Enforcer Armored Frigate

Image

A newer addition to the VNFSN fleet, the Zealis is a compact armored frigate easily capable of rivaling contemporary destroyers. It is not as tough as many destroyers, but it's quad thrust-vectoring fusion-rockets and lightweight design give it exceptional agility and speed.

It uses several newer technological devices like a NanoBot Reparation Matrix, electromagnetically suspended cold-plasma shielding, and a Micro Warp Engine similar to that on the Drathis. It packs significantly more firepower than contemporary ships of similar size, but can be easily disarmed if the front armor belt is breached.

Main Armament:
-4 Nimbus Plasma-Shooters
-6 Stormbringer Missile Launchers

Defensive Systems:
-Frontal ablative armor
-Frontal Aegis cold-plasma shield
-NanoBot Reparation Matrix
-Micro Warp Engine
-4 Point Defense Particle Guns
-2 Heavy Interceptor Particle Guns

Triakis Devastator Heavy Cruiser

Image

The Triakis class is a completely new design drawn up from scratch after news of the Aliens arriving in this galaxy. It utilizes almost all new military technologies developed by the Vol'Nir, to make a heavy cruiser that will lead the VNFSN fleets into battle against the Aliens.

It's highly modular superstructure allows it to be constructed in segments at regular orbital factories, and be assembled in planetary orbit without needing a dedicated shipyard. Thusly, Triakis Devastators are being built and rushed into service as quickly as possible.

Main Armament:
-1 Dimension Rift Phase Missile Launcher
-1 Defiance Precision Plasma Lance
-2 Awe-Striker Micro-Rocket Swarm Dispensers
-6 Stormbringer Missile Launchers
-2 Stinger Rapid-Fire Particle Bolters
-2 Nimbus Plasma-Shooters

Defensive Systems:
-Omnidirectional ablative armor belt
-Heavy frontal armor plating
-2 Point Defense Particle Guns
-2 Heavy Interceptor Particle Guns
-2 Guardian Light Pulse-Laser Interceptors
-NanoBot Reparation Matrix
-Micro Warp Engine
