New Eden and its universe

Post by goduranus »

Political Factions

New Eden

4 Star systems
2 Inhabited Planets
Capital System: Empyrean
Population: 452,000,000

The protagonist faction of the universe.

New Eden is a colony 40 light-years from earth, established by a private venture two hundred years ago. It was initially peaceful colony, but after almost succumbing to a recent communist revolution on New Eden itself, the government and the population have taken on an almost fanatical opposition to communism and antagonism toward its communist neighbors.

New Eden possesses advanced cybernetics technology, and uses it to greatly augment its industrial capacity. New Eden is noted to possess numerous industrial moons and asteroids that are almost completely automated.

New Eden Military Forces, NEN, is developed on the technological bastion of advanced automation and inexpensive hyperdrives. These technologies allow NEN create very effective medium-sized starships and to a large number of them. NEN also has some of the known universe's most effective unmanned fighters.

Independent System of Camelot

1 Star System
1 Inhabited Planets
Capital System: Winchester
Population: 98,500,000

Another colony not aligned to any regional powers. Camelot is currently undergoing a more severe than usual economic depression, and discontent about the government's handling of the economy had sparked revolutionary activity among the colony's few inhabitants.

Camelot has relatively little industry and possesses sparse network of space infrastructure. The economy of Camelot is supported by tourism income and export of refined organic molecules harvested from Winchester's outer gas giant.

The military of Camelot posses many small, non-interstellar warships of domestic design, and a few larger interstellar warships purchased from neighboring powers.

Republic of Reveton

5 Star Systems
3 Inhabited Planets
Capital System: Michelangelo
Population: 6,430,000,000

A Group of Colonies settled by Earth Government about 100 years ago, and was also the destination of mass immigrations. Better planning ahead for immigrations prevented the social problems that plagued the Athenian League planets. During the scare that the Athenian revolution might spread to The Reveton Colonies, New Eden was instrumental in providing economic aid and military hardware that calmed the public mentality, and thus a friendly relationship formed between the two governments. Although the recent eruption of revolutionary activity on NE caught Reveton's planners off guard, Reveton nonetheless was able to provide help to New Eden's loyalist faction with small bits of assistance during the later stages of the New Eden revolution.

Reveton was quick to develop itself as the sector's financial center. However, being such a new nation, its industrial and technological base is less advanced than those of New Eden and Athens.

Reveton Space Force possesses a balanced fleet of ships, numerically about the equal of the NEN, and technologically about as advanced as that of the Athenian league. The Reveton government had petitioned New Eden to transfer more advanced military technology to keep up with recent advances in the Athenian Navy. Out of fear for its technology falling into Communist hands, however, NE had only allowed the sale of significantly downgraded export-variants of its weapons systems.

Athenian League

8 Star Systems
7 Inhabited Planets
Capital System: Delos
Population: 9,352,000,000

A group of planets settled by the Earth Government about 150 years ago, and was the destination of mass immigration during the first five decades of its founding. 60 years ago, inequality of income distribution during its years of rapid growth eroded the stability of a government already hard pressed by problems due to continued immigrated. Thus the old Athenian League government fell within the time span of a week into a socialist government that informally gravitated to Communism. Although initially benevolent, this new Communist government gradually enacted harsher policies in a period marked by internal strife. When the dust is settled, Communism became merely a tool for the Athenian League to expand its influence to neighboring nations.

Due to wide availability of human labor, as well as the ideological opposition from the Communist Government, the automation technology in the Athenian League is less advanced. This results in a significantly lower per-capita industrial output than that of New Eden. However, due to an early effort to expand its merchant fleet, Athenian League gained experience building larger ships. They now have the most advanced shipbuilding techniques in this part of the universe.

40 years ago, the Athenian Navy was disrupted by upheavals in the political sphere. There had been purges, assassinations, and appointments to military position due to political favors. With talents lost, and incompetent people in their place, the Athenian Military doctrine and hardware was a jumbo of confusion that is the chaos of that era. Much of the order had been restored in the military, but still bulk of the Athenian warships in service today still bear the legacy of those years. Athens The government has put much effort into improving the hardware the doctrines since. Athenian Navy is currently the largest force, numerically, in the sector.

Socialist Republics of New Cairo and Ruben

2 Star Systems
3 Inhabited Planets
Capital System: Wilson for New Cairo, Ceres for Ruben
Population: 114,000,000

These are two star systems near the Athenian League that had undergone their own revolution and civil wars 5 years in the past. Revolutionary forces on these worlds received help from the Athenians, and immediately requested Athenian military protection after their success. These two republics had more or less been administered by Athens since, and there are talks of further integration into the League and even of annexation, which many fear would disrupt the balance of power in the sector.

Earth Alliance

95 Star Systems
130 Inhabited Planets
Capital System: Sol
Population: 182,756,000,000

Earth Alliance consists of many, many old colonies of earth, banded under a loose central government. Although developed beyond the extent of any nations in its peripheral, its planets are plagued by social problems caused by overcrowding and pollution.

The Earth Alliance maintains a formidable space force that they rarely send beyond its own boarders. Being the sole superpower in the known space, it does not actively seek to expand its borders, because in its eyes, the known universe is its own backyard, and the reluctance of small nations like New Eden to declare their allegiance merely mean that it saves the Alliance the burden of direct administration.

These numbers are sort of ridiculous. New Eden has four systems but has only colonised two worlds total. And it's existed for 200 years, yet has a population numbering a mere half-a-billion people? Really? That would mean each of those worlds has roughly 1/30th of the population of modern day earth. And in spite of the fact it's so utterly tiny it has automated and completely industrialised moons? Really? Are you high?

And Reveton! A population 1000 times smaller than modern day earth spread out over three worlds! Wow. What an incredible waste of space.

The Earth Alliance is somewhat better, but you've got to take into account the fact that such a massive space nation would have something resembling a capital, most likely Earth itself, I imagine. This capital in any rational world would be incredibly industrialised and be home to tens of billions of people alone, if not hundreds of billions, with towers stretching miles into the sky, Much like Coruscant in Star Wars.

But I digress. This is more or less okay, despite some retarded minimalism. I don't even know what that map is supposed to be, though. How the fuck is that a map?

To answer Anna:

I'd like to portray my universe as where it's easier for ocean-going ships to carry people across the Atlantic in the 1800's than it is for starships to carry people across 40 light-years of space now. Without extensive immigration, it takes a long time for the population of a planet to grow to billions. The colonization of New Eden is privately funded and it's not a destination of government sponsored immigration. The colonists were those minority with money to get here on their own, so NE has an abundance of capital to industrialize, but not have a whole lot of people. On the other hand, Reveton and Athen were the destination of government sponsored immigration, but there is still a limit to the number of people spaceships of the technological level in this universe can carry, and there is a limit to the number of people that can be migrated economically.

In addition to that, I'd also like it where terraforming technology is not so advanced that most planet can be made habitable. Although New Eden owns 4 star systems, there is only 1 naturally habitable planet among them. Some of the other planets can be terraformed, but that process takes time, and won't have a lot of people living on them for a long time to come. And yes, most of the planets that are inhabited aren't up to their population capacity because of the limit on the rate of immigration mentioned above and low rate of reproduction.

That map is a placeholder for a picture I've yet to make because I still haven't got the power supply for my desktop PC fixed, and I'm using my notebook which doesn't have a graphical editing program.

The Reveton population numbers was a typo.

I'm gonna post a short story I wrote up. Though this forum seems rarely read, my first short story, C&C is appreciated. Maybe I should start a new thread for this? I want to keep this thread for background material on the universe.

The Beating Wings of the Butterfuly

The gates of the security perimeter slid open, revealing a path toward the looming shape of the Cube, headquarters of the Mont Blanc Institute. For Director-Assistant Richard Muller, the trip from the local airport had been a pleasant ride through a scenic mountain pass. It was that time of the year, and he can’t complain.

He had been called from his job at the Security and Intelligence Agency to report to his superiors at the institute. As a courteously valet opened the door of his limo, he took a moment to stare at the Cube’s shimmering façade. In his mind, the image of this building’s simplicity can be in no way associated with the immensity of its purpose.

Richard swiped his pass, and soon his elevator car came to a stop on the Cube’s top floor, and a middle-aged office lady waved him to enter the office at the end of a long hallway.

The camera zooms back, and the image of New Eden’s President, recedes from view, revealing the crowd that gathered below him. “...and so, when our very neighbors are under threat, a duty falls on our shoulders, to defend not just their live, but also their freedom.”
The Director, with a slight sneer, mutes the TV.

“Quite convenient for some Communists to be so close to our borders.”

“Quite so indeed. Although I wouldn’t say we got them completely on our leash, their utility outweighs what trouble they can cause us for now.” The Director stated calmly.

“Alright, let’s get cut to today’s business. Status report from our operatives in the Earth Alliance?”

“Well sir, 85 percent of our operations are on schedule, 5 percent are ahead, and 10 percent have encountered some difficulties. It looks like they will be ready by December deadline.” The Assistant paused, “The locals have detected revolutionary activities, and are asking Alliance Central for help, but Central has enough problems of its own to really to be able to do anything any time soon.”

“What about those guys in Athens?”

“The guys have managed to convince those commies that abandoning their oppressed comrades in the Alliance territory won’t do their reputation any good. But only a faction supports direct intervention, a lot of them, but still there are the moderates that only dares to clandestinely send in supplies and technical support.”

“We’ll have to get a bit pushier with our measures on them, eh?”

“Indeed sir.”

“Let’s make sure our own people are those we can count on, then. I want everything in New Eden to be absolutely reliable when the time comes.”

The Director turned, looking at the setting Empyrean Star across the western horizon, he whispered, "Es kommt der tag."

At this stage it may not be easy to see exactly what's going on, but as I write more, hopefully things will become more clear.
