Speech of MRA President Haesrin Sytheusen, at the start of the campaign against the To'Hol Venaari invaders

Ladies. Gentlemen. Friends and colleagues. We stand here today on the verge of destiny.

Today is the day that this Movement, this noble cause will be tested greater than ever before. We are about to head into the darkness of war,
against an empire that has existed longer than our history and is more advanced
than any civilisation we have encountered before.

But is that going to stop us? NO, IT WILL NOT! WHAT DO THEY HAVE ON THEIR SIDE? Death? Destruction?
Mindless slaughter, and the enslaved races that would like to see nothing more than the end of their tyranny?
THAT IS WHAT THEY HAVE!

And what do we have? UNITY! DETERMINATION! WE FIGHT NOT FOR DARKNESS, BUT FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN,
FOR THE FUTURE OF CIVILISATION!

Far too long have we let them hold us down. Far too long have we let them taunt us! Kill and destroy without anyone to stop them,
because we were afraid. BUT NO MORE! THIS IS WERE WE DRAW THE LINE! HERE, AND NO FURTHER!
No more appeasement, no more giving in. IT. STOPS. HERE.

As of today, as of this moment, no To'Hol Venaari will go unscathed. No technocrath will DARE to cross the line we draw.
THEY WILL KNOW US. THEY WILL SHIVER IN THE CORNERS OF THEIR HALLS and they will see their terrible mistake.

The old Alliance was destroyed to their cowardice. NOW WE PULL THEM OUT OF THEIR HIDING HOLES,
AND WE WILL MAKE THEM PAY for their actions. WE WILL MAKE THEM PAY.

THIS IS A DAY FOR RETRIBUTION.

THIS IS A DAY FOR GLORY.

THIS IS A DAY FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN.

THIS IS A DAY FOR HOPE.

Historical references

In 1287 A.D., Tensions in this galaxy had risen to such heights that an all-round Galactic war could no longer be avoided. Conflicts erupted, and the Galaxy was submerged into the darkest age since it's history. Somewhere in the Orion arm, however, two of these warring factions had come to an impasse. Any next action by either party would result in the destruction of both. In the face of this destiny they started making agreements, and such the Vilushan-Ruustirii Alliance was founded.

Not long after, however, similar situations occured throughout the galaxy, two to three parties at a time stopping their fights, and some even joining the Vilushans and the Ruustirii, creating a larger, more stable, and more prosperous Alliance. Finally so many of them had joined that the time was near to speak about a Galactic Alliance.

After the invention of the extremely efficient and powerful Henebrach-Tse'Huchan hyperdrive, the Galactic Alliance saw the possibility now created; expansion into other galaxies. While travel inbetween took several months, the Alliance nonetheless managed to create interest, and the first Intergalactic Alliance was called to life a few decades after.

However, this expansion wouldn't go unnoticed. And the Alliance wasn't the only Intergalactic body in existance. The first meeting with the highly religious United Coalition of free Systems went bad, and the desire to expand was too great on both sides to avoid a conflict. Heavier war, was never fought.

Nonetheless, no war continues in eternity. After almost two-hundred years of fighting, both factions were so worn-down and so startled by the horror of war on such a scale that the conflict ended the day a cease fire was called. Both nations took another hundred years to grew accustomed to each other, though, and official treaties were set years after the end of the conflict.

But the end of the problems wasn't even close.

In the Alliance year 4353, word was out of a misterious plague making heavy casualties in some outer rim worlds. Alliance medical science couldn't stop it; the plague seemed to adapt immediately to every move made. After a few decades the Plague started to exploit a weakness of the Alliance only it could reach; it's open borders. It's massive trading and civilian flottilas, carrying people from one world to another. The virus grew airborne, hitchhiking on ships, starting it's slaughter only on planetary surfaces. None of the ingenious air filter systems could stop it, and by the end of the century, the Plague had killed no less than 9% of the Allied population.

The Alliance senate had no choice; they had to close all and any borders. But that meant a terrifying thing; the Alliance...was no more.

----
But it worked. The Plague subsided, and casualties were so downed, that there wasn't any reason to speak of a plague anymore. Untill..

Casualties what was once the Alliance outer rim started to rise again. However, science was now advanced enough to make a startling discovery; the virus, the monstrosity that slaughtered so many, was a construct. It was created by someone to do exactly what it had done; kill. And by killing, destabilize the Alliance. But then again, why the sudden peak? Hadn't it done enough?

Simple answer; no. Instead of killing enough people to make the Alliance weaker and ripe for the taking, the Senate had reacted too soon. The Plague's creators hadn't reached their goal yet. And now, for the first time in their long history, the To'Hol Venaari revealed themselves to the outside world, attaiking outer rim worlds.

Meanwhile, in the Milky Way galaxy, news of the Plague being artificial reached the ears of the Vilushan Sovereign Empire's leaders. Re-igniting the hopes of ever stopping the virus, they started to negotiate a new Alliance with the Ruustirii, hoping to find a cure for the Plague in the hands of the To'Hol Venaari. Three other factions joined, and since then the Movement to Restore the Alliance has carefully gathered military power to take on the mighty To'Hol Venaari Theocracy and their client races, taking revenge of the trillions murdered.

----------------------------------------------------------

The MRA has come a long way since the institution of a coalition with the other nations in the Milky Way galaxy. After 12 years of hard and bitter fighting, the To'Hol Venaari and their followers have been pushed back out of 3 of the original Intergalactic Alliance galaxies. The MRA has met up with thousands and thousands loyal to their cause, gathering support as they fight. Hope lives again among the beaten peoples of the Alliance, and the universe is a few steps closer to seeing greatness again.

But not everything went well; the destruction of a large portion of the Onooinen Trading Flotilla has put a large dent into MRA resources near the front. What's worse is that the hatred for the enemy has grown. Now only two outcomes are possible; the final destructon of the Old Alliance and it's allies, or the annihilation of the To'Hol Venaari untill every last bolt and screw of them lies on the scrapheap. It hasn't come to crimes of war yet, but the only thing standing between genocide, either by the bittered people of the Movement and it's allies or the Technocracy, is the Alliance Remnant.

After meeting up with the battlegroup led by the Seratiel Grand Admiral Victoria de'l Oradore Renaldi, a tripartite of leadership has been instated between MRA President Armana Trieste (Former Vilushan Empress and MRA councilmember), Archimandrite Nathaniel Cesarus and Grand Admiral Renaldi, each controlling a specific portion of the war effort; politics, military and making the first steps to reinstate the Intergalactic Alliance.

In all, the Great War has been a slow succes. But the outcome may now depend on one effort; in a daring move, the To'Hol Venaari themselves have dedicated their Home Fleet to the war. Now Veri Thuul remains fairly undefended, open to attack. The current battleplan is to ascertain the location of Veri Thuul by capturing a THV warship, and use a newly developed Doomsday weapon, mounted on the massive Jade Martyr class Rex Dreadnought Herald of Dawn, against Veri Thuul itself, hopefully crushing morale among the Technocracy ranks, and showing the THV's followers that their masters have lied to them; how would a god allow it's planet to be ravaged?

Part 2; Races of the MRA

The MRA consists out of five races, of which four are ex-members of the old Alliance;

The Vilushans

Roughly humanoid, the Vilushans are usually taller and less diverse if it comes to hair and eye colour. They are also more advanced than the average human, as a significant part of the population can slightly manupulate most common objects. In this light, Vilushan society has experimented with several technologies involving using the mind directly as control center for machines, for example connecting a navigator's brain to his starship.

Image

Armana Trieste, current Vilushan empress

Vilushans are a proud and artistic race, and through their pride they have adopted a xenophobic attitude. This has been mostly resolved by the prospect of ever curing the Plague, and the common enemy, that the To'Hol Venaari represent. Arts are, on Vilvaron, the most valuable posession, and the number and quality of paintings, scultpures, literary works...one posesses or has made are a large part of the Vilushan status.

Vilushans use the classic hyperdrive as an FTL system; an advanced zero-point particle generator creates exotic matter, which is then accelerated into space, untill it has reached critical speed to rip a wormhole in the fabeic of space. Wormholes are rifts that lead to hyperspace, a realm where gravity is the only force of nature present. Scientists yet have to discover why there is something as unusual as hyperspatial gravity, but it's effect on hyperspace has caused the dimesion to be far more compact than our Universe, thus contracting realspace distances.

The Ruustirii

The Ruustirii are a higly ceremonial race. Discovering spacetravel through excavation of an ancient derelict that crashed on their world, they were quick to start worshipping it's creators, only known as the Predecessors. They also adapted the technology fairly quickly, and have left a footprint in galactic society with their unusual ways of approaching physics, since some basic parts are simply missing in their science. The Ruustirii only united themselves a few decades before the Galactic Wars, but were nonetheless able to pose a worthy opponent for much older nations such as the Vilushan Empire.

The average Ruustirii stands about two meters tall, with specimens reaching up to 2.5 meters being no exception. They are amphibious, and need at least 80% humidity to be able to survive for longer periods. Ruustirii are largely gherbivoric, although fish is seen as a delicacy and eaten only on special occasions.

Image

A Ruustirii warrior

The Onooinen

The Onooinen are a herbivoric race, posessing some of the most unusual characteristics in known Galaxy. They originate from a jungle world, Onochna, and are adapted to high humidity and the hostile environment of a living world. They posess an almost simpiotic relationship with their world and every other living thing on it. Onooinen that leave their world must take special psychological courses to adapt to the loss of the constant presence of their world.

Onooinen skin is very dense, acting almost liking an exoskeleton. Their limbs are agile and flexible, with many joints in peculiar places. They posess a set of sharp, powerful teeth that can snap branches in two.

Despite coming from a hostile environment, the Onooinen have adapted to galactic society. In the days of the old Alliance, they were excellent artists and philosophers. After the fall of the Alliance, the Onooinen had to seek income elsewhere, and became a race of traders. Their adaption to hostile environments makes them resilient to most viral infections, and although serious decontamination is required, Onooinen are almost never infected. Research for using this feat for a cure has not been very fertile; it would involve putting the entire galactic population on similar hostile worlds for the next three thousand years.

Image

The Entellians

The Entellians are human colonists, with a history roughly similar to that of the IVL. Originating from Western Europe, more specifically the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and the United Kingdom, they left Earth on an adventurous voyage, as one of the first groups to colonize other worlds. The Entellians chose to travel beyond Earth's sphere of influence, however, and strart anew without Earth's supervision.

Needless to say, the first few years, even decades, were a time of hardship. Building cities, farms, hospitals and the like from scrap, the Entellians slowly began creating their own society. This independance has marked the Entellian's place within galactic society; they are known for their unusual way of looking at things, especially science.

Entellian science is the most advanced in the Galaxy, with their understanding of hyperspace being the shining crown on their work. Entirely independant from the old Alliance, the Entellians developed their own, powerful hyperdives and started research on other uses of the other dimension.

Entellians are also more evolved than the generic Terran human, though only slightly. Minor telekinesis is common, and some have been known to develop telepathy in it's crudest form.

The MRA president, Haesrin Sytheusen, is an Entellian.

Image

The Estedians

The Estedians are a reptillian race. Being uplifted by the Old Alliance, they only recently discovered space-travel and have a fairly primitive way of FTL travel. The Estedians are hunters, and their culture is organized in a tribal way. They are not united yet, and while some tribes have pledged allegiance to the MRA, others are entirely unmoved by the matter.

The Estedians have no powerful fleet; despite maintaing a few escort corvettes, they largely focus on ground battles and infiltration of enemy territory. They're excellent hunters, after all.

Part 3; Technology Report

1. FTL-travel

There are several ways of FTL travel;

1.1 Hyperdrives.

Hyperdrives are a combination of a particle accelerator and an energy-dump burst thruster. The particle accelerator is powerful enough to create unstable strangelets, which are then fired through a hyperspace cutter near the bow of the ship. The strangelets decay 50 kilometers away from the ship, and rip open the fabric of space, creating a rift to hyperspace. The burst thruster fires, and launches the ship into the rift befor it closes. Normal drives are used inside hyperspace, and the process is repeated for exiting it.

There is no scanning or device that can penetrate into hyperspace, although sensing equipment can pick up the mass echoes of ships traveling close enough. The same goes for scanning and sensing from hyperspace.

1.2 Warp drives

Whereas a hyperdrive uses an inaccurate and slow method of travel, Alcubiere warp drivescan put a ship on an instantanious, pinpoint precise journey. The usage of a fusion reactor, however, is not advized when in warp travel, so ships require to use dump batteries that quickly drain. Subsequent limitation to the length of Warp jumps makes it more of a tactical weapon than a means of travel.

1.3 Wormhole relay networking

A relic from the days of the Old Alliance, these devices are scattered throughout the galaxy. They are powerful particle accelerators, functioning much like a standard hyperdrive, but capable of maintaining the stream of particles. Usage ofmore powerful accelerators allows creation of connected wormholes, that simply need to be entered and exited for instantanious travel over massive distances. The only limitation to the system is that the exit point also needs to be a relay, and that relays actually have to be built first before a new system can be opened to the network.

Holography

Holography is a very widespread type of technology. It's used in viewscreens, ranging from the Main Viewscreens aboard starships to your everyday television system.

Semisolid Holographics are used in most control consoles, from TV remotes to weapons control aboard a starship. It is used to simulate both screens, graphs, indicators and buttons, all in a simple projector-sensor package.

Solid Holographics are use to simulate real life objects, and even people. A more complex projector-sensor package is used.

Artificial Intelligence

All starships and complex machinations need Artificial Intelligence to operate, albeit just a simple computer. The pinnacle of Artificial Intelligence is the so called Sentient AI, or Artificial Sentience. Humanoid emotions and capabilites compared with the processing power of a thousand supercomputers. Each AI is created through a complex combination of memory and character imprints from a live brain and computer machination.

Although technically Sentient AI's are machines, they have the same rights as any other sentient being.

Part 4; Misc. Database Entries

1.Starships

There are thousands of types of starships; from droid-controlled mining rigs to civilian luxury liners and the massive dreadnoughts used by powerful naval forces.

1.1 Civilian starships

Civilian starships are usually cheap, mass production ships. Small and unarmed, except for the personal ships of important corporate personnel, who are mostly authorized to sport point defense. Offensive weapons are banned from civilian ships.

Classification for Civilian starships, small to large

1.1.1 Mining rig (usually droid controlled or via central intelligence)
1.1.2 Transport vessels; light freighter, medium freighter, heavy freighter, superfreighter, tanker, supertanker, personnel transport, mail transport, bulk transport, agricultural transport
1.1.3 Luxury vessels; Class 3 yacht, Class 2 yacht, Class 1 yacht, Luxury liner

Civilian starships are banned from using strategically important FTL relays, and rely on using their hyperdrives to reach those relays open to the public for usage.

1.2 Military starships

Military starships are xactly what the name suggest, starships used by the military. Usually armed and shielded for specifically for their role. They are mostly expensive, as only the most modern ships are good enough.

Classification for military starships;

1.2.1 Starfighters; Light, Medium, Heavy, Space-Superiority

These are light, single or two-manned craft, focusing on scouting, escort and combating other Starfighters in so called 'dogfights'.

1.2.2 Starbombers; Light, Medium, Heavy, Torpedo-bomber

Starbombers are slower than Starfighters and are a rare sight. Usually used to attack heavy capital ships, they carry little direct weaponry, and focus on heavy missile/torpedo launchers.

1.2.3Monitor

Monitors are scout vessels, used to protect civvie routes in wartime or during pirate/privateer threats. They are fast and sport only a single heavy gun.

1.2.4 Corvettes; Scout, Missile, Light, Medium, Heavy, Assault

Corvettes are nimble, light starships that carry a variety of both light and medium weaponry. They tend to rely on flanking enemy ships, and using either long range, high damage weaponry or point-blank chainguns, disruptor beams or other fast-firing weaponry.

1.2.5 Frigates; Scout, Missile, Torpedo, Light, Medium, Heavy, Assault

Frigates are the lightest of fully fledged warships. Used to protect larger fleets from starfighter or bomber attacks, they are deployed ahead of larger armadas to scout and clear the way. Groups of frigates can engage larger opponents up to cruiser class, although they are no match for the larger dreadnaughts.

1.2.6 Destroyers; Missile, Light, Medium, Heavy

Destroyers are versatile warships, with armament that focuses on dealing heavy damage in shorts amount of time. Usually deployed as the bulk of an armada, or in hunting packs, destroyers are a deadly opponent for anything smaller than a cruiser, and can take down larger warships in packs.

1.2.7 Cruisers; Missile, Light, Medium, Heavy, Communications, C&C (Command and Comms), Super, Armoured

Cruisers are mighty combat vessels, often referred to as mini-dreadnoughts. They carry advanced packets of heavy weaponry, often relying on broadside tactics to bring all their guns to bear. They are slow and heavily armoured, and some are large enough to serve as mobile command centers.

1.2.8 Carriers; Light, Medium, Heavy, Assault, C&C, Super

Carriers focus on deploying large groups of starfighters and starbombers into engagements, and supporting them with long range havy weaponry. They are slow and cumbersome, but are a though opponent for any type of vessel. They can also double-serve as PD vessels in larger armadas, as they carry impressive amounts of AA to fend off enemy fighters.

1.2.9 Dreadnoughts; Combat, C&C, Rex, Armoured, Mandatory

Dreadnoughts are massive, lumbering behemoths, carrying impressive amounts of weaponry, armour and shielding. They are considered a strategic resource, and are only used as flagships in larger engagements, or as command platform for entire wars. Some are known to carry fighters, just like the Carrier type, but they focus on bringing an amount of firepower to bear that dwarfs even a supercruiser.

Rex Dreadnoughts are a special class. Often referred to as special flagship classes, these starships are only built by the most powerful species or factions. Costs are immense, the amount of crew required impressive, and losing one could mean the end of an entire war effort, simply because of the ensuing drop in fleet morale.

The MRA is currently attempting to build a Rex Dreadnought, the Necronomicon class. Given it's name in honour of the first Dreadnought to fall at the recent battle of Cortese, these vessels are currently under construction on a secret location, although some have speculated that the only shipyards large enough to build such a monstrosity would be the Old Alliance shipyards. Popular believe is that the MRA is using the shipyards at Alliance Dyson Installation #1, Embrace, although the station was completely locked down after evacuation.

2. The Plague

Developed by the To'Hol Venaari as the ultimate nation killer, the Plague is a highly adaptive nanovirus that has proven it's barbaric worth a dozen times over. Used against several powerfull races, this thing has made more deaths than war over the past thousand years.

The virus itself is a marvel of genteic engineering, though; it attacks the immune system, much like AIDS does, but in a far more sophisticated way. Macrophagii that eat it will be infected with substances that make them believe that the bodily cells themselves are viruses, turning the immune system against the body itself. The effects of this gruesome, as the body starts to decay from the constant stress of destruction on a cellular level.

The effects of the Plague. Note, not for sensitive viewers.

Part 5; Movement Military Forces

1. The MRA Navy

After the merging of the five factions into the Movement, all respective navies were reorganized into a single, powerful apparatus.

The Navy is lead by the Movement Archimandrite, the most powerful military figure in the MRA, and, probably, the Galaxy. The amount and power of ships under his/her command are rivaled by nothing but the Technocracy itself. Current Movement Archimandrite is Nathaniel Cesarus.

Ranks in the MRA navy and naval insignias can be viewed here.

1.1 Organization Index

The Navy itself is sorted into seven fleets, that are each divided into several battlegroups;

The Home Fleet

The Home Fleet is a defensive force only, and is always on stand-by for quick response against attacks.

-0th Home Battlegroup of the Movement
-1st Logistics taskforce
-2nd Home battlegroup of the Movement
-3rd Special Taskforce
-4th Home battlegroup of the Movement

-10th Special Taskforce
-11th Logistics division
-12th Destroyer Division
-13th Battlegroup of the Movement

3rd Fleet

-14th Battlegroup of the Movement
-15th Battlegroup of the Movement
-16th Tactical Warfare Division
-17th Logistics Division

4th Fleet

-18th Battlegroup of the Movement

-25th Destroyer Division

6th Fleet

-26th Battlegroup of the Movement
-27th Logistics Division
-28th Destroyer Division
-29th Tactical Warfare Division
-30th Battlegroup of the Movement

1.2 Additional Info on Organization

In addition to these fleets, most colonies maintain a small police force of commercial combat vessels to stall enemy threats untill Naval reinforcements can arrive.

Each fleet is led by a Fleet Admiral, and each Battlegroup/Division/Taskforce by either a Vice-Admiral or a Rear-Admiral.

Battlegroups are simple groups of ships, balanced out, ranging from fighters to the flagship of the Group, mostly a Dreadnought or a Supercarrier.

Divisions are more specialized groups that rely on their specialisations to commit strategic and tactical warfare.

Taskforces are even more specialized; relying on stealth and pinpoint strikes, these are silent, swift and deadly.

1.3 Naval Uniforms

MRA Naval uniforms are designed to be useful. The generic standard uniform has a utility belt, lots of pockets, and is as comfy as possible. The Gala uniform is only worn on special occasions, although high-ranking personnel may wear it as a status symbol.

2. The Movement Ground Armed Forces (MGAF)

The MGAF is divided into several divisions;

2.1 Stormtroops; basic fighting forces, soldiers on foot with medium power armour.

A Haktivid Hive Works Series 19 Battledroid. Automated units are cheaper than biological ones, but are, generally said, dumber.
An MGAF Stormtrooper. Power armour makes them as strong and fast as battledroids, while keeping the valuable capabilities of actual people.

2.2 Marines; the bulk of the MGAF. Usually stationed aboard starships, equipped with power armour.

A Movement Marine.

2.3 Heavy Troop divisions; soldiers on foot with heavy power armour and heavy weaponry.

A Heavy Trooper in Besieger armour.

2.4 Armoured Division; tanks, jeeps, walkers...heavy firepower on legs or wheels.

An MGAF Scout walker, with a light particle cannon.
An MGAF Superwalker. THese lumbering behemoths are rarely seen on a battlefield, but are capable of laying waste to entire armies.
An Advocator HAT or Heavy Assault Tank. Fast, thick armour, and medium range artillery on tracks.

2.5 Commando's: Masters of infiltration, stealth, and pinpoint attacks. Operation in teams of four.

Standard Commando armour. The 'Cerberus' Powered Armour can be upgraded to fit almost anything, from jetpacks to cloaking systems to extremely advanced sensor packages.

2.6 Mecha Divisions: Most MGAF Mecha units are experimental, as the technology was banned in the IA era due to usage of WMD's on some models, and the fact that most models could be upgraded to carry WMD's. New advancements in mechanical joint and muscle technology and computer systems has made usage of mecha's viable once again.
