Centuries prior, the Warlord Aezir, an ex-terran grand admiral, gathered an impressive armada of ships mounting technology centuries ahead of their time in the outer rim territories and made a massive push into the heart of Terran space. The defenders were unprepared for the assault, lead by Aezir's massive flagship, the Avatara. Tens of systems fell swiftly under the unrelenting assault, until the fleet mysteriously vanished. The conquered systems then reported that nothing had transpired. Aside from the massive losses taken by the Terran fleet, no evidence that the fleet had ever existed remained. Many though it was a hoax, that it never happened.
Three hundred years have passed, and the events of the Warlord Inquisition has faded into nothing more than myth, ghost stories told by traders out on the rim to explain sudden disappearances.
They weren't totally wrong.
In truth, the inquisition ended when the Terran Admiralty surrendered and offered a sector in the unknown regions beyond the rim to the warlord, erasing the planets from all archives, and hushing all systems and basically erasing from everyone's mind the occurrence of the incursion. Forces have patrolled the borders of the sectioned-off space, just beyond the rim, preying on any ship unfortunate enough to wander outside controlled space.

Aezir Zethiyus
The Supreme warlord of the Heresy, Aezir Zethiyus was a former Terran Grand Admiral born on an Industrial world on the fringe. From his background, his rapid ascension through the ranks was somewhat of a miracle. Upon achieving the rank of Grand Admiral, Aezir gathered a large group of disillusioned Admrials-turned warlord and secretly began the production of a massive conquest fleet. The resulting incursion led to the "exile" of the warlords and the formation of the Aezir Heresy.
To retain command over his nation forever, Aezir burned his conscious onto a mechanical frame, sacrificing humanity for everlasting "life".
