FTL drive report:
IVL FTL drive report:
"EB Drive"

The "EB Drive" was developed by an anonymous scientist who disappeared as soon as the drive made debut. His current whereabouts are unknown.
(In reality the EB drive is the "Elizabeth Brewster Drive" because Elizabeth Brewster AKA Lizzie invented it)

The basic mechanics behind the drive is that. The ships rips a hole in subspace in front of it, by force. Once the hole is opened, a tunnel is formed, depending on how much power is being forced into the creation of the hole (This does not widen the hole, that's done by more then one ship focusing their drives). In the process of creating the tunnel, once it runs it's course, it opens another hole at the end of the tunnel. This entire process is instant. But just because you jump from a gravity well doesn't mean you won't have to put up with drift, it's just dramatically reduced. The stronger the well, the lesser the drift.

The tricky part comes when plotting the points. In order to plot a jump course accurately, you require gravity wells of sufficient strength to "anchor" the tunnel ends at their location. If this isn't done, the points will "drift", how much depends on the distance between the too. This means that jumping into deep space is unreliable, random, dangerous, and inaccurate. However jumps between planets, stars, and other sufficient masses able to create a gravity well. Ironically blackholes, one of the most dangerous anomalies in the universe, are the best place to plot a course to/from, mainly because of their high gravity. This makes such blackholes, excellent gathering points and entry points for just about anywhere. The same applies to stars though jumping to a star directly should be done with much caution. This however explains why it's preferable to do a "star to star" jump between systems rather then any other method.

Other notes:
.Light does not pass through the tunnel. Only matter. So using them as a "Snipe" method is impossible. It also makes jumps risky because you don't know whats on the other end. Advanced scouts are recommended.
.Another interesting note, it is very possible to open a Subspace tunnel inside a planet's atmosphere. It has been done before by IVL warships needed to move quickly from a planet to another location. So far there hasn't been any adverse effects on the planets this was done on.
.Because it's safe to use the drive inside a planet's atmosphere, some attempts have been made at jumping ships directly into a planet's atmosphere. However this isn't recommended because the drive can on occasion still slip off course and possibly send the ship directly inside the planet. This is generally why course plots are attempted at a good distance away from planets.
.There are spots where jumps cannot be made from or to. The reasons for the occurrence of these "Dead zones" is unknown, but it is speculated that it's simply a matter of different properties in that area of subspace makes it refuse any attempts to force a channel. These "Dead Zones" are actually fairly common, and it is recommended that ship navigators mark the site of the zone in their computers and report it to the captain so the captain can report it to the IVL-NU for an update.

How IVL jump-cores work is classified under act IVL-CA-055071.

Jump gates are theoretically possible but IVL has yet to test the concept. Mainly due to the resources required. These however would in theory make the travel method much more safer then the unpredictable method currently used. So it is being looked into.
