You did bring a gun, right ?

Making the clearly impossible motion of licking my finger through my visor, I proceeded to flip a single page of the holo-mag held in front of me. It was a double fold on celebrity love or some such.

"Yep."

Could you reach down and ... touch it ?

I paused half way between 'Shuttles of the Future' and '50 ways to snazz up EVA suits'.

"Why, exactly ?"

A good majority of these expedition members have thoroughly inspected theirs. I believe it to be a ritual of some sort.

One way to snazz up your EVA is to stick prettiful stickers all over. Motioning a finger lick, I clicked the article advance button.

"They're just insecure. It's a people thing - you wouldn't get it."

Blanche had been the last one to enter, a short and slender woman with a sort of ethereal grace, slender and pale with silver hair, each strand as thick as solid copper wiring. She was clad in simple, dark attire, and her ice-blue eyes darted over each other member of the group, before dismissing them as unimportant, for the time being.

Activating her PHD (Personal Hacking Device), she noticed that there were at least two AIs trying to wirelessly hack several secure files, and then... each other? She lofted a brow, deactivating her PHD and glancing up as Lance begins shouting, pulling a disgusted face at his immature attitude and shaking her head slightly.

Finally, she turned her gaze to Temujin as he started talking, listening in silence and giving a slight nod of her head in agreement to his words. It didn't really add up to her. Nor did it add up that such a motley crew was assembled for this task, but she wasn't about to dwell on that too much. She checked the pistol at her hip, before glancing back to the screen and speaking up,

"Any indication of what the gravity is like down there, Moira?" She asked, concerned that it might be higher than her body can handle.

So ... we good ?

"Wha ? Where did you pick that up ?"

'Da hood, ma babe. Anyways, the search is back - No pirate raids or related activites have been reported in the last decade.

"That's odd. Those are only official reports; did you check complaints made to PMCs ?"

... the major three are coming up with nothing. Not even a mention in the entire Seraphim database.

"So. What could scare pirates off from good pickings in unguarded space ?"

While the rest of the room stared off into space, waiting for others to do something, Lysa was getting very impatient with the briefing woman.

Will she ever respond to my question? I'll give her thirty seconds before I go out there to that ship and get it ready, permission or not.

It was as if everybody was sitting in a chat room online, shouting at everybody else to make their RP characters do something.

Moira glanced at Lysa. "The onboard guidance computer is already on the final stages of the warmup, so that won't be necessary." She smiled.

Then Moira rolls her eyes. "Just so you know, that room is actually a Faraday cage with a simulated network and databank, so all you've been 'hacking' off it is garbage data."

Moira then turns to Temujin. "It's the neutral zone. No Class Six* or above military vessels are allowed within that area, and all covert operations are offlimits." She states this quite matter-of-fact-ly, as if reciting it for the nth time. "That is why the Newton is taking six Class Five military vessels as escort. Not that we expect them to be necessary, mind you. As for the research vessel, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?!" She glares at the man. "We are looking at a complete scientific anomaly. Do you think we're going to send a two-man shuttle with a MICROSCOPE to investigate?! The Newton will maintain a rough geostationary position above the site whilst you investigate."

Moira takes a moment to compose herself before looking over to Blanche and Bebop. "Given the planet's size and orbit, we suspect it to be slightly lower than Earth average. As for 'good pickings'? Out in the NZ, there are none. The only convoys that go through there are military and guarded by at least a dozen Class Fives, nevermind Class Fours, Threes, Twos, Ones and sometimes a Class Four Carrier with Fighter and Bomber escorts. Only a -madman- tries to pirate out in the NZ."

(*Any cruiser sized/armed vessels are classified as "class six". Technically the Newton is a class six, but it's lowered armour, armament and civilian purpose actually rate it in as a class three†. Thus, she has the escort of a Terran Pyromancer-class Missile Destroyer, a pair of Aphenolan Repentant-class Support Destroyers and a trio of Nilvetian Avenger-class Heavy Destroyers.)

(†No matter how hard you try, you can't pass a class ten off as a class one, though.)

Lance grunted. "Do we have anything on terrain?" What type of landscape? Icy? Abboreal? Forested? Desert? Or Earth-type... Or... hell, like Syrtis V?(VOLCANIC)"

"Wait, WHAT THE HELL!? NOBODY TOLD ME I WAS HACKING NOTHING!!!" ATRUM burst in. "You COULD have told me first, you ASSHOLE!"

"Shut up. Now." Lance muttered.

" A scientific anamoly. I wasn't informed of this. From what I could tell, we are going to be dropped straight onto a military base. AND I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I AM ONE OF THE PREMIER GRAVITON PHYSICISTS IN THE GALAXY!. Frankly, you are waitin for this to either: a. Blow up in your faces and blame it on us, or b. have us discover something useful and then shove us out of the way and take the credit."

" You can disagree or not, but the fact remains that based on my available information, its true. And I know several microscopes sized devices that can perform better than your vaunted science vessel, such as my brain. If you think you can openly insult me like that, I'll will make your life hell."

Temujin stares very coldly, first into open space, then turns to everyone else in the room, then stares at the room.

" We are being duped to our deaths, and you all know it."

Then a visible smile formed on his face, and in a much happier mood, he turned back to them and said,

" So why waste any time. I'm sure we should share what we can do. With eachother. As I have said, I'm probably one of the best graviton physicists in the galaxy. I have also taken basic military training, Navy, and several adcanced courses."

" How about the rest of you?"

Lysa was starting to get very, very annoyed with this whole operation. It wasn't entirely the Project managers' faults, but also a lot of the annoyance she was feeling had to do with the haphazard bunch of misfits that were accompanying her on this mission. She agreed entirely with this Temujin guy.

Wraith Squadron could go down there, travel through the nature unknown, infiltrate their base, find out everything we need to know, and still get out without them even knowing we were there. Yes, a squadron of fighters and maybe a generally unarmed Class 5 Carrier would've sufficed. No covert operations my ass. Hmm ...Maybe they're not telling us something. Something that they know. And we have absolutely no clue what's coming. No - if they needed a simple recon mission, they would send someone like us. Instead, they need this. Lysa laughed to herself. Atleast they didn't choose the giant ant that almost bowled me over in the hallways..

Lysa wished she was back with the squadron.

Suddenly, Temujin spoke up.

"A scientific anamoly. Blow up in your faces and blame it on us, or b. have us discover something useful and then shove us out of the way and take the credit. You can disagree or not, but the fact remains that based on my available information, its true. And I know several microscope sized devices that can perform better than your vaunted science vessel, such as my brain. If you think you can openly insult me like that, I'll will make your life hell. We are being duped to our deaths, and you all know it."

Lysa grinned at the truth of his words. She spoke up. "I couldn't agree more with his entire speech. In fact I think th-"

All of a sudden, Temujin smiled an absurd smile and proceed to completely blow Lysa away with his change in attitude. "So why waste any time. I'm sure we should share what we can do. With eachother. As I have said, I'm probably one of the best graviton physicists in the galaxy. I have also taken basic military training, Navy, and several adcanced courses. How about the rest of you?"

WTF? Is this guy bipolar?!? Is it safe to bring him on this mission? And to think I was starting to enjoy his company. Heh.

Lysa decided to first answer his question. She recited it as she knew it, but her thoughts were clearly elsewhere.* "Lysa Dunter, Squadron Lietenant of Wrath Squadron, Lt. Colonel level Military clearance. Starfighter pilot, one of the best. Put me in front of any controls and I'll fly you out of there. Same thing with mechanics - I'm your girl. Comm expert, and not too shabby at splicing and hacking. Ex survival/covert commando, I can handle my own in nature."

He is so right. We have absolutely no clue what were dealing with, and these people at Project Aurora must know more about the planet. Christ, they've had forever to study it. No sane person can willingly send in 6 people to an unknown planet, not having the slightest idea of what is on it or who they are dealing with.

Lysa spoke up. "Temujin has placed my concerns perfectly. This crew? This shuttle? This entire Project? Why? Who arranges all this to investigate a simple scientific anomoly?! I'll go along with whatever you've got planned, but as soon as I'm satisfied that you are withholding vital information, or otherwise underestimating the situation, I'm jetting out of there with as much as I can salvage. And the government will know about it. So for now I'll pretend to assume that this scientific anomoly really needs a crew like this, which obviously it doesn't, and if you've kept your word, nothing will go wrong."

-----------------------------

* For clarification (not part of the actual post because I don't want it to be D=): She was speaking it the way someone would when they know what they're supposed to respond saying, but when they say it they don't actually register what is coming out. As I said, clearly, her thoughts were elsewhere.

Also, sorry if my dark blue is clashing with ATRUM, but the speaking was starting to jumble in with the thoughts and the narrative stuff.

From an outsider's perspective, I looked as though I were struck by a minor convulsion.

"-aha ha ! Whew. That's great."

What ? What happened; did someone shoot themselves in the foot ?

"Nah. Just some brain dead applicant proudly announcing his microscopic brain. Ha !"

... and you have nothing better to do ?

"Huh. That's odd, actualy. For the first time since I walked into this room I'm realising how much time has passed. It's felt like days."

Two to be exact.

"Well that settles it. Activate the COM !" I stood up, tossing the magazine onto its stand, "I have a science-class AI in my backpack, I have a large gun on my hip and I am now commandeering this shuttle. Moira; please ensure that our receiving vessel is prepared for hot entry as I haven't the slightest clue as to how to pilot a shuttle."

I've flown entire fleets of battleships. A short jumper shouldn't push my limits too fa-

"Pssh, and pass up flying a space craft at dangerously high speeds ? You wish. Now HAL - open that door, crack the steering and lets mosey ! Everyone with me ?!"

Temujin calmly pulls his gun out and points it towards Bepop.

" No, I'm afraid you are not commandering the shuttle if you don't know how to fly."

He walks slowly towards the shuttle for about 15 steps, always keeping Bepop in his gun sight.

" Now then, what exactly can YOU do?", Temujin asked, his voice not exactly threatening or commanding, but something in between. The smile from earlier had vanished from his face, and it was now the hard face of a soldier.

Allison looked on in shock. One team member had just pulled his weapon on another! There was dysfunctional, and then there was this.

Allison jumped up and yelled, "Put your weapon down you idiot! Didn't anyone ever teach you basic weapon safety? Unless you want to get pasted by about seven separate defense systems, of course."

Allison evaluated the situation. The weapon had silenced all conversation and had everyone eying their pieces, at least the ones that were carrying. Allison was currently unarmed, not to mention unarmored as well. If the shooting were to start, she would have to find the nearest cover and try to get out of the room before a stray projectile or ricochet ended her career.

Why are these people all so hostile? And childish? Shouldn't we be trying to work together instead of dictating orders and pulling weapons on each other?

"Ikari XV's roughly earth-like. At least, compared to what earth was like back in the 1800's or so. Not the smog-choked, factory-riddled toxic-atmosphered planet it is today, let me tell you that much. Ikari XV seems to be a fairly untouched world apart from that single base. It's very odd."

Moira rolls her eyes at Temujin. "And I am the Project Manager--" she says this with a subtle tone that says 'I am your boss, no matter who you work for in the science world' "--for the Terran Government Scientific Institute. It is only due to me that your projects get approved. So actually, I'm in quite the position to make your life hell, Mr. Nivarra."

She takes a pause and looks at Nivarra with a completely deadpan expression.

"How could you not know? ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEMS DO NOT SUDDENLY AND SPONTANEOUSLY APPEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF UNKNOWN SPACE THAT HAS BEEN MAPPED TO THE LIGHTSECOND."

She smirks.

"Oh, and thank you for announcing to everyone that you have a microscopic brain. I'm sure that will put them at ease."

"And actually, we need a ground team because beyond those two dozen probes we lost, we cannot get anything beyond basic images. Anything zoomed shows up fuzzy, like someone is messing with our cameras -- but they're not, we ran hundreds of diagnostics and system checks. No hacks, no security breaches, nothing. Weapon targeting systems go on the fritz and spontaneously start losing their lock, assuming they can even get one, which they can't. We lost contact with, as I said, two -dozen- probes and all of their visual systems went bad, same as our cameras did. We tried GPS-tracking several modified, warheadless missiles. They all flatlined at the same altitude as our probes. No matter the method or technology used."

Moira's explanation is cut short by two beeps and the shuttle access doors opening. Not that anything HAL could have done would have made it open any sooner.

"Ah, your shuttle is ready. I suggest you get going."

The shuttle definitely wasn't pretty, you could say that much. It had eight seats (6 passenger, 1 pilot, 1 co-pilot) and several storage cupboards and such, as well as a larger storage hold in a sealed compartment between the "bridge" and the reactor/engines. Two green boxes with white crosses on them marked as medical kits, and the piloting consoles are lit up, still running final diagnostics.

"Everybody. Weapons. DOWN. NOW." Lance suddenly shouted from the corner. "I AM STAFF SARGEANT LANCE ALARIS OF THE 45TH WATCHMAN DIVISION AND I SAID PUT THE BLOODY GUN DOWN. NOW." He drew himself up to his full height, glaring at Temujin with the full commanding presence of one who had led his squad through - and survived - an entire war campaign- The hell on Syrtis V.

"You could shoot to disarm. And did I mention that you're bloody intimidating? "

"No. Now shut up."

"Everyone. Guns. Down. Bloody hell. This is a RESEARCH project. Nobody is going to commandeer the shuttle."

This isn't a prinny fest, it's a group of madmen and women... He thought.

He then entered the shuttle and sat down in the seat nearest to the exit.

"First in, first to win."

"Hoo-Ra."

Temujin throws his gun lightly at Lance, and turns towards Moira.

" Actually, they are many ways a solar system can appear in the middle of mapped and charted space. Your use of the word SPONTANEOUSLY clearly proves your ignorance of them. As for a ground team, you lost 24 probes. Therefore, wouldn't a science team supported by several marine squads make more sense. Next time you plan a mission, remember to take into accoun all variables. Now if your most highly honored one will execuse us poor serfs, I belive we will be leaving.", Temujin said, starting in the same cold tone as earlier, but finishing with a highly sarcastic remark.

He then turned and walked into the shuttle, sitting down in one of the passengers seats.

"I am a one-man Marine Squad. You don't need to worry about anything. You've got a gun, don't you?" Lance grunted irritably.

"Shh. Don't insult Mr. Microscopic Brain, Lance!" Atrum quipped.

"Heh."
