do we really need a larger core right now? we've still got 310MW of capacity which is quite a bit, and before long we should be able to salvage another bigger core if needs be.

i'd say the gunwhale and plasma cannon and the AESA scanner are definate takes. the EM array and engine will both improve our performance in combat and especially will reduce damage - which is always good - so i'd say either one is a decent benefit. personally i'd go for the engine, as it gives us benefits outside of combat and makes it easier for us to outflank enemies as well as evade projectiles, although the EM array seems to me to be a much rarer occurence, so perhaps we shoud grab it while we can

edit: can't power the EM array, the AESA and the plasma cannon all at the same time... hmmm... more problems

Light Fusion Core II, more power is always useful. Better to get it now when we don't need it, than need it later and not have it.

AESA Scanner. As fun as it is to ping the universe, it would be better if we could not signal our presence to potential hostiles while scanning.

Ishtar's Gunwale, because armour is good and we need to armour up one of our flanks.

And Two Light Plasma Cannons, slap them in the Medium sized hardpoints on the gunwale, since they probably wouldn't be very effective as unidirectional weapons.

which is why we need a bigger power core...

Fusion core 2, gunwale, light plasma cannons, and the AESA scanner.
Use the gunwale to armour up the right flank. One plasma cannon on our frontal armour, and one on the frontmost slot on the gunwale.

Guns (does a small weapon take up an entire medium hardpoint? if so, screw the guns and take the EW suite!)

Gotta disagree with this. We can't grab every medium sized weapon we find, that'd just give us a huge drain on our power and make us far too specialised. Those medium hardpoints can fit those two light guns right now, and I'd wager those small, light guns will come in handy. They may lack the power of a medium sized weapon, but they will make up for it in other ways, I imagine.

Go for the AESA Scanner, the Gunwhale, the Core and the Plasma Cannons.

A/N: Fuck me. It's been a while.

Clarent has acquired the following equipment:
Quote:
AESA Scanner
(70MW, 150kg)

Light Fusion Core II
(1500MW output, 1300kg)

Ishtar's Gunwale
(1300kg, 3 medium hardpoints)

Two Light Plasma Cannons - Fitted to Ishtar's Gunwale
(60MW, 400kg, small) each

Ship Summary:
Displacement: 10,100kg
Total Thrust: 13,500kgf
Energy Usage: 730/1500MW
Max Velocity: 134ms-1
Turning Speed: 0.40°s-1
Acceleration: 4ms-2
TAPS Setting: 400m, Flanking

"I motion that we aim for general improvements from now on. We can take on more targets than we could before, but our ship isn't exactly an impressive vessel."

"I think we need guns. Big guns. I've got a feeling we're going to walk into another hellhole pretty soon."

Image

You set a course for the Ronove's location after assimilating the needed parts. The captain seems unfazed at the fact that your ship has just gained a significant amount of mass, but it's a rather nasty sight over there either way. Hundreds of disabled drones are strewn around the lifeless station.

"...looks like the droids overran the place before we shut off the 'corpie ship", the Ronove captain sighs, a tinge of regret in his voice. "But most of the shuttles managed to get out. My Ma wasn't on any of them. Looks like she won't be at the wedding next month..."

"We're sorry we couldn't do anything more", Clarent apologizes. "Perhaps we made a bad call back then."

"...No, no, it's alright", the captain sobs. "You did good work here today. We'll probably be able to file a claim against the Conglomerate for damages. Just have to hope someone's listening."

"So where's my cash?", you interrupt, to Clarent's extreme chagrin.

"Sure. I'll transfer some credits to your account. Anything else you need?"

"You could also get me off of this goddamned ship", you say morosely.

The Ronove's captain seems confused at first, but you quickly explain your situation to him. Shocked, he arranges for his crew to try and release your command pod immediately. You don your EVA gear as ordered.

Image

A team of spacewalkers with plasma torches is unable to cut through the command pod. Thus, the Ronove fires one of its mining lasers on your hull in a daredevil maneuver. Two extra mining lasers are soon focused on the same spot for additional power. Clarent eyes you nervously, but alas, her lips never part to announce the breaching of the hull. Ten minutes of lasering later, the Ronove's captain is staring dumbfounded at the spotless sheen of your command pod. Clarent passes you a shit-eating grin.

"That's just not possible. We could've cut through a six-foot thick meteorsteel bulkhead with that sort of power. I'm sorry, but it looks like you've gotten yourself stuck in some truly freaky shit, freebooter."

"Couldn't you put some more oomph into it?"

"I'm not sure you catch my drift. At the rate we're cutting... I'm not sure what could do it. Maybe a reaction warhead. Maybe six. Either way, I think you should see somebody who looks up cases like yours regularly."

"Damn", you swear, feeling vaguely discontented at this turn of events. "Any directions in particular?"

"I'm sending you the codes for some of the nodes around this sector, seeing as you seem to be lost. Right now, you're in the Daedalus system. You can reach either Undine or Irenic from here.

Undine is the center of population around these parts, I guess. It's pretty safe with the ASN watching over it. I know a big-shot xenoarcheologist who makes a living there. Might be able to help you, if you can convince him you're worth it.

Irenic is where my girlfriend lives. Sera Kessler's her name. She works for an independent researcher who practically breathes conspiracy theories. If you hit her up, tell her Gerry's got a bit of a mess to clean up over here. That's me. Gerry.

But it's a lil' dangerous right now. Usually it's all sweet and pretty, but the Blanket of Dusk has been parking its ass there since last week."

Another unknown figure. "The Blanket of Dusk?", you ask.

"Jeez, you've never heard of it? It's that crazy junker ship that carves up every berk who crosses its path, and a lot that don't. It never opens up a comm channel, and for all we know, its crew don't eat, shit or sleep. The ASN's been trying to take it down for... a little less than a century, actually. It's freaky."

"That's... unusual, indeed", Clarent pipes up. "We may wish to look into it."

"Trust me. You don't", Captain Gerry warns ominously. "If you wanna get anywhere, you'll need to stop by the Big Pig and pick up a Fold Drive. The credits I gave you should be enough."

"Ah. Alright, we'll be on our way, then."

"It's been a pleasure meeting you."

With that, Clarent plots a course for the larger station in the system. For a moment, she seems to wave her hand at the Ronove as your engines whirr to life. You are mildly disturbed at this behavior, but decide not to press her on it.

Image

The journey passes uneventfully. You come across a massive service station orbiting a large terrestrial planet. It's bustling with activity, with mining barges and transports alike going about their work. Large, floating holopanels advertise the station's services.

Since you cannot leave the ship, it takes some awkward conversation to convince the dealerships to do business with you without meeting you face-to-face. Eventually you manage to get some arrangements down.

"I've budgeted your credits according to our needs", Clarent says. "You can only spend a certain amount at each store. I've also saved a small amount for emergencies."

You ball your fists before realizing that they would probably phase through the hologram if you tried to punch her in the face. With that, you default to simply glancing discontentedly at her as you proceed to do business with your artificially limited finances.

APTITUDE - Vintage Items Store
The shopkeeper refuses to inspect any of his stock for fear of defiling their vintageness. You're shooting in the dark here. Choose three:
Blue ROM labeled "Guide to the Outer Rim"
Yellow ROM labeled "love 0.98b"
Old barrel labeled "Biska's SD186 XO"
Pink ROM labeled "Zero Gravity"
Barrel labeled "Vostok Biochem"
Reinforced crate labeled "launch bay 32"

PEACEMAKER - Ship Parts Dealership
Choose three, preferably including a fold drive:
Advanced Fold Drive
"This is an advaaaaanced fold drive, son. Military grade! Pocket-sized. Got stealf shieldin' too, for stealf missions."
(150MW, 600kg)
Standard Fold Drive
"It's the same model of fold drive we saw on the Renegade. It's bulky."
(200MW, 1800kg)
1/4 Gauge Siege Shotgun
"This ain't your daddy's shotgun, boy." "My daddy's shotgun was ten feet long and permanently nailed to a boat. Whenever he pulled the trigger, we would soar two meters backwards and thirty-odd ducks would go belly-up in one shot."
(120MW, 900kg, large)
256mm Heavy Rifle
"This is a cruiser-grade artillery piece for long-ranged fire. I'm a little apprehensive; these things don't normally come this cheap, 'cause the slightest hitch in the rifling could throw the accuracy off by enough arcminutes to lose a battle."
(120MW, 1000kg, large)
Messiah's Bow Section
"The junkers brought me this here flashy tidbit. Said it was from an armed luxury yacht. Can't go wrong with any of them rich folks' things."
(800kg)
Vernier Jet Set
"Itty bitty thrusters for makin' yer ship turn faster. Can't get enough of 'em!"
(80MW, 6,000kgf output, turning x1.5)

Well, /bsf/, I hope you haven't left me yet. Choose from one of the two destination systems as well. Choice is yours, as usual.

Guide to the Outer Rim
Zero Gravity
launch bay 32

Advanced Fold Drive
Shotgun (on the free large hardpoint)
Bow Section (MOAR ARMOR)

Lets go to Undine, maybe get a few pirate-huntan jobs, and some nice loot.

How much of this can we afford, exactly?

I don't see any prices. Or I am blind.

As for directives:

"Investigate this advanced fold drive. I am not convinced of it's authenticity and advancedness. Or, in fact, of it's potential to not break down on us at the drop of a hat, ten minutes after we leave port, or just when we need to use it the most."

"Additionally, don't feel the need to spend everything. A neat pile of savings could come in handy later."

i don't really see the point in the "zero gravity ROM" (any thoughts on what it is) but the old barrel intrigues me... i wonder what is "biska's SD186 XO"?

also, like Arcalane said, the military grade fold drive looks very dodgy... a) how did the dealer get hold of such advanced military technology and b) how come this supposedly so advanced with added stealth etc. uses up less energy than the standard version, even if it is smaller... i'd say stick with the standard or we may come off badly...

as some people may have noticed (ahem) i don't like space shotguns... shotguns are short range weapons, and in naval terms short range is bad. i think we should go with the heavy rifle, as unlike the fold drive which seems too good to be true the guy doesn't seem to be selling this to us and so i think there's a bit of reverse psychology to be had here. anyway, if it is slightly off then we can just go closer, as we would have had to do anyway with the shotgun. basically i see it as better to get the artillery, as if it's good it's good, and if it's bad then we just use it like the shotgun would do anyway, so basically the lose situation is the win of the shotgun, making the rifle appeal to me a lot more

i also say get the jet set rather than the bow plating. the jet set will enable us to actively defend our flanks unlike the bow section as we can keep our front always on the enemy, and will also increase our speed and mobility, making us a harder target to hit which from my experience i believe to be far more effective than armour.

EDIT: so overall my suggestion now is:

Quote:
Blue ROM: "Guide to the Outer Rim"
Old Barrel: "Biska's SD186 XO"
Reinforced Crate: "Launch Bay 32"
Standard Fold Drive
256mm Heavy Rifle
Bow armour

We don't necessarily want our front pointed at the enemy without that bow section.

Fighting those drones took out enough of our forward ablative armor to make the forward large mount at risk -we'll probably lose whatever gun we put on there a few shots in if we don't extend the forward armor from the looks of it, just like how we lost our beam cannon. It'll make our investment in the gun fairly worthless.

We need the pink ROM, or our character will go crazy being sealed up in there! Even if it isn't anything useful, its pink!.

The two systems are Undine, the city-in-space kinda place, and...Ir...whatever the one where the miner dude's girlfriend is. Uhh.. Irenic, also where the creepy junker ship is.

good point i see what you mean... also seeing as he mentioned that it was an "armed" luxury yaucht it may hard a harpoint as well (seeing as logically the bow is a good place to put a weapon) so i say go for it

Quote:

i agree, pink is EXTREME, but still, the barrel is old... oooooooold... and i think it may have some secrets that we need to know, or just something useful... perhaps something about ourselves...

Quote:

oh yeah i see that now... i'd forgotten about that by the end of the post... i say Irenic before Urdine, as reight now we're not exactly in the ASN's good books, and of course the creepy junker is good hunting (or bad... reconsidering those engines?)

EDIT: well if you really want to keep our pilot occupied perhaps "love 0.98b" would be a good option? or do you not think human-hologram relations would be that successful...

hey, reminds me of an old song...

Spoiler: show
<<Since you have nothing better to do than hang out here with me, listen to a tune that I've been working on>>
(Sung to the tune of Whirling Death Spike's "Big Blue Orchids, and Wild Blueberries")

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
He ain't no slouch, pal.

He'll make you smile,
Or cry,
Like Leela did baby:
Airlock love,
Big blue orchids,
Martian skies,
And wild Blueberries.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
He ain't no slouch, pal.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
He'll make you ouch, Hal.

He's got real guile,
Why Lady,
Did you have it daily?
Airlock Love,
No oxygen,
Suffocation.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.
He ain't no slouch, pal.

(Repeat Chorus 11 Times, changing key with each chorus)

...nothing quite like 28th century AI lyricists!

EDIT#2: starstruck, i think that you forgot to update the ship's energy usage before the last post, as i'm sure it's still the same as the last despite the addition of the scanner and light plasma cannon

EDIT#3 if we do get the heavy rifle, can we test it out harmlessly before doing anything else to see if it's good or not. that way we can reassign our TAPS accordingly. also, can we get the stats of all our weapons and armour?
