OK, am I he only one who think we're maaaaabyy overdoing things just a little here? It's like a crappy hollywood disaster move where every possible (and impossible) thing that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Speaking of which since when does hyperspace work like Star Trek transporters so the ship materialize atom by atom? :?

it doesn't. when a ship jumps to hyperspace anything in direct contact with it jumps.

oh yeah, and the robot is a metallic scorpion.

I'm referring to ChaostTeorys description of the ship dematerailising atom by atom...

What else do you think should happen if the hyperspace field starts to degrade and part of the armor gets thrown out of the field's radius? It makes sense to me. I wasn't even considering Star Trek at the time.

Unless you want the entire field to fail at once and the ship suddenly falls out of hyperspace, I'm thinking that as the energy output to keep the ship from dropping back into normal space drops, the radius of matter it can keep in normal space will drop in a quadratic degrade pattern, yes.

And don't roll your eyes at me, young man.

Probably stay inside hyperspace...Once you're there, you're there.

Makes sense to me according to Taskaras description. I figured it similar to nodespace, only not restricted by fixed nodes.

So you use the coils to create a opening to hyperspace. Once there you have to wait for the coils to re-charge again to exit.
So if something should fall of the ship it would float away in hyperspace/subspace/whatever

But hyperspace is an alternate dimension, correct? Therefore it takes energy to enter this space and energy to keep from slippign back out . . . I mean, the coils have to discharge thier enregy, so I was assuming that the energy was being used up by staying in hyperspace, and the cannot leave hyperspace until they fully discharge, and if they do, the ship will implode from dropping out of hyperspace while the coils are trying to keep them in hyperspace.

Anyway, don't argue over details, just grab it and run. I've been ignoring major plot and literary flaws coming from most of the people involved in this story.

Flaws...story...yeah...

The only question is - once you're there, do you need to spend energy to stay there?
Or do you only need to spend the energy to jank the door open and slip in before they shut...and then do the same to get out again.

Trashman is right on the description of hyperspace.

the coils aren't actually used to keep the ship in hyperspace, or even to get it there, to get it there the ship is "folded" through an unstable Einstein-Rosen bridge created by manipulating intense gravity and EMF fields in the ships jump core. the core is a series of rings that spin rapidly then flash brightly and release its energy in a bubble, normally the wormhole would collapse instantly but the exotic matter created by the drive gives the core enough power to wedge the hole open and shunt the ship into hyperspace.

the coils are completely different, using quantum duality to relocate the ship to another point in hyperspace, it doesn't actually travel there, the coils cause hyperspace to twist around so that the ship goes from being in one place to being in another. the problem is that the coils generate a huge amount of hyper-gravity particles in their matrices when this is done, if the ship returns to normal space these particles will collapse inward turning the ship into a miniature black hole.

I'm having flashbacks to Animorphs and Z-space. The whiteness in particular.

Okay . . . well that's interesting. Not my idea of hyperspace, but okay, your story.

Secondly, isn't there some wiring that will cause funky spacetime effects if it gets shot? I can just substitute <whatever> into the post if it makes you feel better.

Why do you care? We're nowhere near the engine core, why do you want to kill us?

"it adds to the drama"

well if weapons somehow activated the shield it would be rather nasty to get caught in since the shield absorbs all forms of energy and dissipates it across its surface area, so if you get caught in it, it could suck all the heat out of your body and all the power from your suit.
