@CT - that was supposed to be a scout drone..ya know..small thing.. figging a gattling cannon on it might seem a bit too much.. I suggest you change it to be a pulse rifle or something smaller.

It's the future, man! Do you know how small gatling guns are made these days? One could easily weld a 4-cylinder air/explosive-powered gatling gun to the top of a 10-15 inch scout robot in the future, and it wouldn't look out of place. Besides, you said it was riddling the walls with bullets, so I assumed it had rapid-fire capabilities, not a rifle. And a rifl would look really out of place on a scout robot.TrashMan wrote:@CT - that was supposed to be a scout drone..ya know..small thing.. figging a gattling cannon on it might seem a bit too much.. [Edit: also]
Slow down. Use periods. Make some sense, please. How did everyone make pancakes if there is nothing in the cabinets?bien4500 wrote:Is this dead?
Jacob tore an old shirt into strips and tied them around his waist as a makeshift bandage for his wound, then he noticed he was hungry, he put his hand into his pocket, and took out a powerbar, but it was expired, so he walked into the mess hall and saw a plate of pancakes, he forced himself not to eat them, because they were someone else's, suddenly a thought crept into his head "Pancakes! That means there is anything else but Mayonnaise sandwiches." so he walked into the kitchen and looked into all the cabinets, he saw nothing in them. In dismay he left the mess hall and said "Maybe I'll talk to the cyborg guy, maybe he can cook, or he has some kind of replicator.".

1. Last I checked rifles have a pretty decent rate of fire (automatic ones)ChaosTheory wrote:It's the future, man! Do you know how small gatling guns are made these days? 2. Gattling guns of any caliber are still big..and the ammo...oh, the ammo. The M-143 is the smallest gattling gun and can be carried by a man, but it's nigh impossible to fire at full speed standing up...and you can't carry much ammo. Now, caseless ammo might open some possibilities. Or it coulbe be a gattling laser or something, but it's power consuption would be still extreeme.
3. It's a scout drone. small drone. Made for scouting. Modified to kill people in closed quarters. A gattling gun is not really a weapon of choice for something like that.

Do you know what a gatling gun is . . . ? Gatlings can be anything from the minigun on top of a Humvee to the Gatling Gun on an Aircraft Carrier to the air-powered, but still kinda lethal, 6-cylinder 1/2 inch diameter bead-shooter carried by some police remote controlled robots. Take said minigun, shrink it with new technology, use smaller, deadlier ammo (particle cannon?), and there you have something that can fit on top of a 12-inch robot. Besides, did I not say that it was a poor job of modification and it had spare power cells strapped to it?TrashMan wrote: 1. Last I checked rifles have a pretty decent rate of fire (automatic ones)

Still feels wrong...no matter how much you shrink it, a minigun is not a assisination tool. It's a squad supports/supression weapon
And a laser minigun would be as much of a power hog as a normal minigun is a ammo hog. Ergo, unsuited for small drones.
SMALL DRONE.
Remember the size of the pod that was described? The drone couldn't have been half the size of a human.

No, seriously, man. A "gatling gun" mearly refers to orign of the design, by a guy named Gatling, who made a gun that can repeat-fire. A machine gun uses the bullet's force to reload the gun, a gatling uses a circular motion. A gatling has no need to be X big or small, it just has to accommodate the ammo it carries.TrashMan wrote:Still feels wrong...no matter how much you shrink it, a minigun is not a assisination tool. I said the robot was 12 inches, which could fit inside a 6 inch pod when folded. The thing is scorpion-shaped, I can easily see having an automatic strapped to its head, more so than a rifle. MAYBE it would look wierd, but you did say that the thing was shooting some sort of fast-reload ammunition at you, so I tried to think of a way to compensate.
BTW, there is no such thing as a laser minigun. The whole "gatling" idea only works for bullets . . .
Good save, Tsakara.

Random interjection; "rotary" lasers have always made me wonder.ChaosTheory wrote:BTW, there is no such thing as a laser minigun. The whole "gatling" idea only works for bullets . . .
My guess is that it would basically consist of a primary "lasing" unit which would fire the primary beam, and then a rotating barrel array which would focus the beam. The rotational action would cause a kind of pulsing effect, and serve to give the focusing arrays a short time to cool between shots, assuming the act of focusing the beam into it's proper state generated considerable heat.
You could, for example, have a 1-lase/5-focus assembly, or a 2-lase/4-focus assembly.

The "gattling" principle applies to several rotating barrels that alternate fire. The spinning and air circulations causes the barrels to cool off a lot faster than a normal rifle, thus making the insane ROF possible.ChaosTheory wrote: No, seriously, man. So one can apply that principle to a laser too...it doesn't work only for bullets.
Like I said, if it's a gattling, it means it has a minimum of 3 rotating barrel...which takes up more space than a normal machinegun. Just replace the word "gattling gun" with the word "machinegun" or plasma gun or whatever else that sounds more plausible.
