"Uh... What did you say now?"
Captain John Faraday was obviously confused, looking over the many printouts that his chief scientist on board was giving him.

"To put it in layman's terms, the nebula is expanding. We are in it's way."
"So? Nebulae are simply collections of hydrogen ions spread over large areas aren't they?"
"Well yeah but, they wreak havoc on electrical systems.
"And...?"
"You realize that life support is based off electrical systems, right...?"
"But what of our shielding?"
"It's down, remember. And before you ask we can't outrun it, the engineers disconnected power to the engines to facilitate repairs of the aft shield generators."
"Ugh... Is there any other way?"
"I don't think so, sir. We're screwed."

" Grav Cloak off sir.", helm reported.

" Maximum acceleration, follow those ships.", Hiron ordered.

The Astari accelerated heading directly away from the nebula, it sensors still blind as they readjusted from the cloaking effect.

" SIR, THERE IS A MASSIVE ENERGY SPIKE BEHIND US.", his sensor officer suddenly yelled over the ship, his tentacles waving around in a fury of motion.

" Blind Jump, authorazation code Gamma-Alpha-Zeta.", Hiron said to his console. The Astari found another point in space, farther away. Pulling on the threads of gravity, the two points became right next to eachother, and the Astari moved through them, before releasing its hold, allowing space to become normal again. Hiron turned to the tactical display. They were in empty space, about 4 light years from the Nebula.

" Home will want to hear about this.", Hiron said to his communications officer.

" QECD?", it responded.

" Yes. Its the only thing with the reach, and I know its a huge risk. There easy to tap, and the Xargon have them. Use the Helium Aplha 92 code. That was institued 3 hours before we left, and should be safe.", Hiron said.

A message was sent, clouds of light being sent into a dense cloud of atoms, a cloud of Helium. And then, in the Andromeda Galaxy, hundreds of millions of light years away, the message was recieved by 2 sources. One was Vargon. One was Xargon. The Xargon were a race of mechanically enhanced butterflies, malevolent and evil to the extreme. The Andromeda war had been going on for several Darshal(roughly a century) now, and was no were close to ending. The Astari had been sent to the Milky Way with the hope of finding allies. Unkown to them, they had just brought the war with them.

" Jump back, but 4 AU away from the Nebula, in the direction the ships were heading."

" Aye sir."

And the Astari jumped back, into the fray.

OOC: Yay enemies.

Alert

Food expanding

Energy pattern detected - self-organization detected - potential self-awareness detected

Meryl, being organic, could not think quite as fast as her ship could panic, but the difference was not insurmountable. The nebula - the very one the Mu-ohki had just been feeding off of - was starting to grow, to become possibly alive...in the sense that a mass of hydrogen and electricity could be alive. For a moment she considered trying to contact this new life form...

FOOD EXPANDING MAYBE ATTACKING

...but soon reconsidered. It had been her prey, so now she might well be its prey. As might the others present...and quite a few of them seemed to be having trouble escaping quickly.

First contact protocols, she sighed to herself. This will take a lot of energy - hopefully the results will be worth it.

Outside, a flash of white briefly illuminated all ships in the vicinity as the Mu-ohki tore a hole in space and yanked the gash open. A quick message was broadcast on all the various communication frequencies that pilot and ship had observed. "If you need help escaping the nebula, fly through this to get away. We'll hold it open as long as we can and still escape ourselves."

Only after the message was sent did Meryl realize she had forgotten to plot where the fold would go to. Quick readings excluded black holes or anything else that would be instantly fatal, but beyond that...well, at least it would be better than sticking around here. Probably.

Time to enter the plot.

The Drill Bit was cruising about 12 light hours away from one certain nebula, on the standard Latairian mission of getting the majority of the idiot population of the universe up to date with them. This was called "sharing knowledge", but some of the more smug and cynical Latairians viewed it that way. The Latair also liked to help out in general, as part of sharing knowledge.

Captain Noldum was enjoying a piping-hot cup of octazian tea, when the long range scanners picked up an energy spike. He set the cup down in midair* , and looked into the matter. “Al, what’s that energy spike?”

A gruff male voice-the computer AI-came to life. “Looks to be an expanding nebula**. Bloody nebula. I also see an awful lot of fresh ingoing warp trails, and only a few outgoing warp trails. This probably means people are still there.” After a moment, he decided the idea was incomplete, so he added to it. “Bloody idiots.”

Captain Noldum thought the situation over for a second, and decided on the course of action. He pressed a button on the control panel, and turned on the broadcasting system.

“Crew, prepare for activation of warp engines.” He turned off the broadcasting system, got back to Al. “Al, do a warp jump to the nebula.”

“I hope you know what you’re doing.” Said Al bluntly.

The Drill Bit’s warp drive shuddered to life, and it made a short jump through hyperspace, parking itself neatly in the mess of ships. They arrived just in time to catch a transmission broadcasted on several channels.

"If you need help escaping the nebula, fly through this to get away. We'll hold it open as long as we can and still escape ourselves."

“Al, open up communication channels with all the surrounding ships. Also, start working to get a hard scan on this nebula. I want to know everything about this.”

“You’re so demanding” Al complained. “But okay. The comm. channels are up, and I’m starting the scan.”

Lasérrou prepared himself, and started speaking with a quick pace, but excellent diction. “Attention: All surrounding ships. I apologize for the informal greeting, but time is of the essence here. I am Captain Noldum, of the starship Drill Bit. My ship’s scanners picked up this expanding nebula, as well as many warp trails. We came to help. Are there any crippled ships here that cannot get out under their own power?”

*All cups comes equipped with anti-gravity projectors nowadays, to do away with the ridiculous amount of cupholders and accidental spillage of your drink onto the conveniently exposed generic electrical component at the worst possible times.

**All AI databases have space related data extending back to the very first guy who thought it’d be cool to look through a piece of glass when staring at the stars, all the way to which Latairian ships got a new paintjob within the past month. All ship AIs are automatically updated every month, and can send and receive specific data between those times. So it’s very likely-especially given the antiqueness of the Latair-that they’ve studied every single bloody thing about expanding nebula.

Wooh. That was long. I lost the post TWICE before getting it up. Sorry if it seems like I'm squeezing myself in here, but I figure this is as good a time as any.

Kira Survelliance Drone EP-341, image no. 238591

The Spirit of Flame - Flamestrike class Kiran Dreadnought

Length: 770 metric meters
Width: 370 metric meters
Depth: 80 metric meters

Armament:

11x MK5 40mm Twin Ambiplasma Projectile Railguns (Twin Anthem Cannons)
- Railgun which fires shells containing a mixture of antimatter and plasma, which detonates on impact. Difficult to intercept due to small size and massive projectile acceleration. Fires at rapid rates, in groups of two, at long ranges.

10x MK21 Plasma Projectile Gun (Pulverizer Turret)
- Rapid-fire turret able to turn 360 degrees, to face enemy drones, and fires blasts of plasma in rapid succession. Moderately slow projectile speed - most effective against larger targets or used in large groups. Plasma projectiles are easy to intercept due to their heat signatures.

3x Quad Pyroclasm Missile Rack (Pyroclasm Launcher)
- Missile rack which fires 3x4 guided missiles at long distances, carrying a heavy payload of antimatter and plasma. Possible replacement missiles include sensor drones, EMP missiles, and biological payloads.

8x MK12 Plasma Pulse Beam (Heavy Plasma Beamer)
- Basic plasma beam, which fires a continuous beam of plasma at a target, pulsing every few seconds to burn through armour and overwhelm shields. Effective against fighters, very short range.

10x Dedicated Plasma Beam Interceptor (Plasma Beam Defensive Module [PBDM])
- Dedicated interceptor device, which fires a plasma beam at incoming projectiles for an instantaneous moment, normally destroying the projectile outright. Also effective against small drones, and can be used to disable fighters.

Drone Bay
Drone Bay Payload:
- 20x Sentinel Defence Drone (SDD) - small drone able to deploy a secondary shield around a target ship, which is virtually indestructible, unless the drones themselves are targeted, which have weaker shielding.
- 10x Servitor Support Drone (SSD) - utility drone, armed with a single Light Plasma Beamer.
- 5x Shieldbreaker Assault Space Mech (Shieldbreakers) - space combat mech used to disable enemy shields with energy bombs, and cut through hulls with fusion cutters.
- 4x Devastator Shuttle - shuttle used to transport troops - armed with two Light Plasma Beamers.
- 1x Eidolon Shuttle - unknown purpose.

The Spirit of Flame is more of a cruiser then a dreadnought - however, it is armed to the teeth with the latest Kiran space weaponry, and powered by some sort of wormhole-generating core, which energy is fed through, from Kiran power plants.

It is the very first Flamestrike ship made into production - which was designed when the Kiran Fleet needed a smaller ship for moving through asteroid fields, but could contest larger ships, such as dreadnoughts, with a similar ability equal to the Flamestar class dreadnoughts. It is also the carrier of a very important person in the Kira community, yet unknown to most Kira...

The crew of the Spirit of Flame are Kira - mechanical soldiers with brains and morals resembling most humanoids. Dark gray in apperance, with faces which look rather flat, the Kira simply know of one purpose - war - which is what their entire society is based around.

NOTE: MORE TO COME

IC"I have a bad feeling about this,* Sir."
"Okay, change of plan power up the warp drives and get us the hell out of here"
"Cruiser aknowedges." The Merchant's Pride shot out a blue beam into the space before it. From around it formed what appeared to be a small black hole. The two ship powered into it and were swallowed, reverting on the edge of the sector nest to one of the other ships from the nebula.
"Get me a com channel to that ship" Captain Higgins ordered.
"Com is open"
"Well then unidentified vessel, come to watch the show?"

The Crykeen spun a pirouette on the spot, wings turning to the horizontal, then folding inwards and backwards, exposing a rougly diamond shaped lump of crystal around a foot in length - around half that in width - in the recesses uncovered. Facing towards the nebula, the thrusters kicked in, bringing the 'Keen level with the Adeleide, roughly halfway down it's port side.

"Adeleide, suggest immediate withdrawal from area. No data is available on this phenomenon, and our mind-sight is withered by the depth of the nebula."

'Tsudalei. Keep pace with the Adeleide. Prepare trajectory Delta-Alpha-Delta, grapnel spread - check.

Magnetiser at full power, payload boosters.'

The ship hissed softly to itself as a side panel slid away, a gently rotating platform emerging before flinging itself at the Sword of Ragnarok - One side bore four clamps, in the manner of a grappling hook, and the other a slowly pulsating purple, prismesque gemstone.

"Attention the Adeleide. We have deployed a module to the Sword - suggest you lock onto our module for increased tractor beam stability, whilst the module uses our power to remain locked onto the Sword with minimal strucural integrity. Matching your speed now."

IC:
"We thank you, unknown vessel, but I'd suggest you save yourself first. There's no hope for us, the nebula is expanding too quickly. You're far enough to get away"

Unfortunately, Faraday's warnings were unheeded as the other ship sent out a platform to help them.

"Please, save yourself, we're running out of time!"

Unfortunately, John Faraday was right. They would never escape the nebula as long as the laws of physics still applied. If they accelerated fast enough to actually leave the danger zone they would be torn apart.

"Uh sir?"
"Yes?"
"You know, I was thinking. Wh

at if we used the experimental beam?"
"Now why on earth would we do that? And you're just a comm operator, what would you know?"
"Well you see sir, I prefer to know what the ship I'm on can do. The laser emanates a field of highly charged particles around the ship upon firing, which dissipate back into space. However, if it were to be used near the nebula, those charged ions would attempt to dissipate evenly, but is blocked by the nebula. Therefore it would repel the gases. You must remember the charges produced by those lasers are tremendous."
"I am not touching that weapon ever again, did you remember what happened before? We got here! Plus, do we even have enough power to fire it?"

Suddenly the chief scientist interjected.

"I suppose his logic is fine. The beam operates on it's own power, drawn from powerful quantum forces too great for us to understand very well*. It's just a question of whether or not there will be adverse effects, such as this warping we've gone through."
"Well, I suppose there's nothing to loose. Tell the engineers on the upper levels to take shelter, we're trying it."

OOC:
Oh yeah, just a bit more backstory, the empire my people are from were great scientists, they eventually came upon this technology, which could literally steal energy from 'nowhere'. Of course it came from somewhere, but that somewhere was never determined. It was literally infinite energy.

However, shortly after this they disappeared...

IC:

"Alright... prepare the cannon. Firing in 10... 9... 8..."
"2... 1..."

Suddenly a bright flash of light emanated from the Sword of Ragnarok as a brilliant blue beam flashed into space...

Oooooooooh. Never noticed that.

IC:

And in the furious confusion that followed, no one knew what was happening. Eventually, the chaos settled down and the dust cleared...

"What just happened?"
"We've warped again."
"I knew it! What sort of place are we in now?"
"I don't know, wait hey, those are the ships from before."
"But that's impossible, if we've warped."
"Well it seems one of them had opened a wormhole, and we fired our beam into it, which caused it to rapidly expand and proceed to suck us in."
"Oh great..."

Elsewhere, in another universe...

-------------------

Commander Tal-Ket looked at the crew in the bridge. They were all good soldiers, but some of their morals were questionable. However, Tal-Ket had a special VIP on board - and he turned to the corner, bowing to the unusual VIP.

"Commander Tal-Ket, we are almost ready for universal long-range warp." The technician began to fiddle with the console in front of him, mechanical fingers clicking on a mechanical console.

"Inform me on how this works again..."

"We are using this large facility here to warp the Spirit of Flame to another universe. Our location is an uninhabited nebula in another universe. It would be impossible for us to travel such a massive distance without the aid of the Disruption Facility, commander."

"Alright. All systems are normal?"

"Affirmative."

"Prepare for long range disruption."

"Countdown... ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one..."

The Spirit of Battle, the small dreadnought, disappeared in a brilliant flash of light. Blackness met the mechanical troops...

-------------------

"Ugh... my sensors are feeling funny..."

"Commander Tal-Ket! You are awake!"

"Huh? How long was I disabled for, technician?"

"Only a minute, commander. We are surrounded by unknown alien contacts, all directions! We are still trying to identify them - the nebula is interfering with our basic sensors, and most of our advanced systems will take a few minutes to get online."

"What... deploy the Sentinels to our rear, focus power on forward and side shields, and Anthem Cannons."

"Affirmative, commander."

Tal-Ket turned to the child in the corner. The cyborg, remotely controlled, smiled at him.

OOC: Uh, according to Normandy, his laser made the warphole bigger and swallowed us up.

Wait, explanation time. I am going to take the plot, get a stranglehold on it, and take complete control so every little loose end is taken care of.

IC: The damaged ship of the bunch had stated to leave it behind, when another energy spike came up. It came from the damaged ship.

Captain Noldum was looking at the scanners when Al boomed through the speakers.

"Oh captain my captain, the bloody damaged ship has activated a bloody quantum drive, and a bloody laser is powering up. Bloody idiots. Now, I'll explain later, but I need to take emergency control of the ship, or we're all dead."

Captain Noldum took all this in, and immediatly got on the broadcasting system.

"CREW, GET STRAPPED IN NOW!"

With that, the Drill Bit's engines revved up as the ship was coated with a thin but dense layer of plasma with high frequency sound waves integrated into it. It flew over the near-wreck, and swooped down right in front of the laser. It started spinning, and the engine power output was so great, that it was certain every nearby scanner was reading energy levels that looked a tad too high for this little ship.

The Drill Bit zipped forward like a rocket, just as the beam fired. Due to the protection offered by the plasma-sound layer, the beam didn't leave a mark on the craft, and was actually following the Drill Bit as it changed it’s direction a bit right towards the warphole. In other words, the beam curved.

The reason this happened is quite fascinating really, and it shall be explained here.

The Latair, being so ancient, have researched just about everything there is to research. Quantum physics is a class that is taught in the Latairian equivalent of middle-school, and few people have majored in it over the past 500 years. This is mainly because the average Latairian life span is 1500 years, and that gives one plenty of time to research.

Anyways, back to the main point. The main reason this occurs is in the way a Quantum Drive(which is what a Latairian would call the power source of the Sword of Ragnorak’s super laser) works by opening small, local warpholes that connect with hyperspace. In hyperspace, it turns out there’s a near-infinite amount of energy, but if any given ship were to stop moving(and this, in and of itself, is near impossible) and look into the matter, it would be destroyed immediatly. This is because every ship, in the process of passing through a warphole, coats itself with a protective layer that prevents the corroding effects of hyperspace energy, but also blocks scanners from reading this energy.

It just so happens that if the energy that comprises the Drill Bit’s namesake it rapidly rotated, it acts similar to that warphole layer, and the hyperspace powered beam naturally follows this path. When hyper space energy is coated by a warphole layer, then it doubles back on itself and expands outward, before collapsing in on itself and warping everything it was touching to wherever the warphole led to in the first place.

With that explaination, let us get back to the plot.

A flash, then, nothing. Captain Noldum checked the scanners, and apparently they were still in a nebula.

“Al, what the-“

Al decided to jump the gun and explain.

“Hell happened? The bloody nebula and its bloody sentient nature means it decided to take the rest of itself with us. The entire zarkin’ nebula traveled with us. 3 things have happened besides that.
1. The trip through the warphole accelerated the growth of the nebula, meaning whatever sentient species was going to emerge is now going to emerge within 15 minutes.
2. The sheer energy of this whole event means that the nebula was cut off from expanding and infecting the rest of itself with sentience.
3. A ship which I am scanning right now warped in right before this whole bloody accident happened and traveled with us.”

Several looks of astonishment, pondering thought, and surprise jumbled itself onto Captain Noldum’s face, and he looked as if his ship AI just took control of his craft, zoomed straight in front of big powerful laser, and lead it into a warphole. Which is exactly what happened.

Captain Noldum turned on the comm-system, and broadcasted a message on every possible channel. Even the new ship would get this one.

“Attention all ships, I shall attempt to explain what just happened. Long story short, the very damaged ship among you shot a laser powered by a quantum drive. It hit the warphole, which expanded, and took us and the rest of the nebula with it. As well, the nebula has stopped its expansion, so your ships shall not be damaged by it anymore. Unfortunately, the sentient race that would be born of this nebula has reached near completion, and shall assemble itself within 15 minutes. My ship AI is currently scanning for just what may be coming next. As well, we seemed to have picked up a newcomer right before the warphole expanded. I shall wait for you to respond after you’ve gotten everything sorted out, as this was a very reactive event.”

OOC: I think I covered up the plot holes. Sorry for taking control of the plot like that, I just wanted to put some things in concrete.
