Hello there. Im not good with introductions so ill be short.

Im just another newcomer lurking for some time posting his silly little offerings, so please bear with me while i spam you with my sillyness :)

I saw Battleships Forever on IGF website (by the way, congratulations!), decided to check it out and boy was i surprised how much potential BF has. You probably hear this alot, but i have to say this game is amazing, easily one of the best games ive ever played. The idea is great, the execution is better, inclusion of shipmaker is brilliant. Big hairy kudos to th15.

That said, BF and shipmaking is my new addiction and i have ALOT ideas, so im gonna stay here for a while :wink:

My first ship. I opened the shipmaker to check whats the big deal and then it just flowed... couldnt believe how much fun it is. Unfortunately, this was before i discovered parenting...

Myrmidon

Second ship. I know the name is not new, but the ship design stemmed from it, which ive 'invented' before i got to know someone already named his ship Myrmidon.

Designed to be a point blank skirmisher, Myrmidon uses dieterling device and its superior speed to get up close and personal with its target and shred it to pieces with close range weaponry. Reinforced frontal section combined with a nanomatrix buy it some time to finish its job.

There are two twin repeaters in the middle.

This ones third. I know, its ugly, but i just had to get this shape out of my head. It needs balancing, and there are some parenting issues.

Warhawk

A nasty long/medium range bombardment ship, Warhawk circles around facing its target and pummeling it with blaster shots and plasma missiles, while its four railguns snipe off important modules. Very dangerous to ships without good point defenses.

It almost defeats Hammer of Dawn!

Thor B (broadside configuration)

While its main batteries might not be awe inspiring, Thor's real asset is its survivability. Armored sides, six particle guns combined with impeder, a nanomatrix - all this makes Thor a tough cookie to crack.

Twin megabeams on each side.

Ill add a frontside configuration later.

Havoc

Powerful battleship, armed with multiple tachyon batteries, three forward facing beamer arrays (two beamers each), and eight demeter launch tubes. Tachyons and demeters overwhelm point defenses and deliver area damage, while beamers provide concentrated fire power.Thanks to combining two deflectors with heavily armored frontal sections it has good staying power, but if that isnt enough, Havoc can use its particle guns and flux projector for cover.

Im still not sure on the colour scheme. The loadout might need some toning down, too.

Aedon

The idea behind this one is to have a massive, high tech non-human ship. Not sure what weapons i should put on it (high tech - beamers and megabeams?), but im sure ill use stacked or modded ones to keep it clean.



Myrmidon, Armadillo, Warhawk, Thor and Havoc are balanced against toned down IVL Low tech refit fleet by Lizzie, (http://www.wyrdysm.com/phpBB2/viewtopic ... 34&start=0), mainly against "Twilights Fall" class Battlecrusier (lowered the stats) and to some extent against "Hammer of Dawn" class Dreadnought (lowered stats, removed some weapons). I used point system from '2nd Battleships Forever Custom Ship Tournament' for loadout balancing, stock weapons only.



Some unfinished concepts:

They belong to the same fleet. As far as structure goes, Yavanna is pretty much finished.

Sorry for double post, but i wanted to keep the op clean, and i might need this space later.

A few questions i have:

1. Whenever BF or shipmaker is running, all sounds from my PC are distorted. Not that much though, it seems like they slow down for second every 3-5 seconds. Is this a known issue?

2. Is there some kind of standarized ship classification/shipbuilding point system, except for the one from custom ship tournament? if not, which fleets (that are not ridiculously overpowered :) ) are most commonly used for balancing?

3. It seems that my ships, when compared to other creations on this forums, lack weapons for their size/piece count. i don't like cluttering up my ships with all those modules, and they also bring an fps hit. However i still want them to be balanced against other ships of them same size. Any ideas how to fight this, except for weapon modding?

4. Ive noticed that whenever i start a new ship in shipmaker, it takes on the color settigns of the current session, and then the colour scheme is saved with the ship. Then again, inside BF, it uses currently defined colours. Is there any way i can change shipmaker colur schemes on a ship thats been already saved? In other words, how can i change color schemes inside shipmaker?

5. Anything else i should keep in mind when shipbuilding, any threads i should check out?

6. Is there any way one can help with development?

No, the whole point of the shipmaker is the sandbox feel. You can build to rules if you want, but most of us prefer not to. As for balancing; use the stock ships. ;)

This is a case of "don't want to but know I have to", as I see it. Now, boosters can be a good start for some weapons, but eventually you're going to need to dabble in weapon modification.

You can't. It's a known bug. In SM3.0, you'll be able to set game-independant colour settings however, so that your ships will retain any specific colouration you desire.

The Weapons & Modules Guide is a must-read if all those weapons and modules are confusing you ([/shamelessplug]), but other than that, I can't really think of anything to recommend. It's not like we have an archive of ship-building tips.

Now onto the meat of the matter!

Warhawk; WANT. That ship looks awesome. It reminds me a lot of the Cybrans from Supreme Commander.

Thor B; Looks like a trash compactor and a grizzly bear had babies. Function over aesthetics indeed.

Aedon; Beamers would suit this a lot, especially micro beams. High-damage ones would be an excellent "bizarre advanced alien weapon", I think.

I'm loving the Aedon, And the Armadillo looks cool too.
And to answer the question about balancing, A patrol craft should be able to take on one of the stock patrol craft, and not wipe the floor with it, But should loose against more than one (balancing should be done with AI vs AI), the same goes for Battlecruisers and Destroyers. Most people use Lizzies ships to balance against the ships you're seeing around the forums nowdays.

As for balancing to canon ships, if I jay so egotistical, myself and Natch's ships for the most part try to balance to the canon creations.

Otherwise, Lizzie seems to set the standard for the stronger ships.

Yes Mjolnir your ships are among the most powerfull but Lizzie is just way better in Public Relation, there for her ships get more attention.

I got ships that can wipe Lizzie's Fleet of the face of the galaxy by there own, but I don't care if people choose me as being the most powerfull. Besides Lizzie's ships are amongst the sexiest and inovative designs on these forums.

In short: Grow up!
