Not sure the best way to get a screen shot on here, but this is my first attempt besides a stable of god ships.

Parenting is where you ensure sections are connected to there proper hosts. And also ensure your modules and weapons are connected to the right section they rest on.
Parenting?
If it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it

To work with parenting, select a section, and then place a new section. The new section will be a Child of the section you had selected.
When a piece is destroyed, all of it's children, and it's children's children, etc, are destroyed also.
Children don't necessarily HAVE to be placed on their parents, but doing so allows a ship to be destroyed as one might expect; i.e. taking out a wing's support structure destroys the wing as well.
Don't worry, my first ships were a parenting NIGHTMARE.
In shipmaker 2.x, there's no way to change an object's parent after it's been placed- you have to delete it and make it again. When 3.0 is finalized, I'd suggest switching to it, as it allows parent switching.
Also, in the shipmaker, pressing P toggles the parenting lines (not the structure, just the dislplay), which can be handy for screenshots.
