The Ships of Jovian Chronicles

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

The Ships of Jovian Chronicles

Post by Syngyne »

For those who aren't familiar with it, Jovian Chronicles is/was an RPG by Dream Pod 9, the makers of Heavy Gear. It's a sci-fi setting that was heavily inspired by Mobile Suit Gundam, complete with colony cylinders, giant robots (called exo-armors in the game), and an Earth vs. Colonies cold war. The game had a very detailed tactical space battle system associated with it, which was later streamlined into a product called Lightning Strike, which was simplified and much faster paced. Unfortunately, it seeps that DP9 is no longer supporting the tactical game, as they've discontinued selling minis for it.

I got hit with a wave of nostalgia recently, and since I'm on Thanksgiving break from school I decided to work up some of the basic fleet ships from JC. I did my best to work within the constraints of BSF while reproducing the ships as close as possible to the source material. All of the weapons have been modified in some way to bring them in line with the JC stats, so these ships aren't necessarily balanced against the BSF stock ships, though I think they're pretty balanced against each other to an extent.

The ships are roughly to scale with each other, with grid lines in the ship editor being 25m apart.

Jovian Confederation

Thunderbolt-class Cruiser

Image

An old design, but a reliable one. Thunderbolts are the workhorses of the Jovian Confederation navy, with 41 vessels in existence. Their main punch comes from the turret-mounted Particle Accelerator Cannon.

Length: 235m
Loaded weight: 4000t

Armament:
2 Kinetic Kill Cannon turrets
1 Particle Accelerator Cannon turret
1 Missile Bay
Point Defense Array

Javelin-class Missile Cruiser

Image

A cousin of the Thunderbolt, the Javelin is designed with missiles as its primary armament. Not a front-line fighter, it's best put to use by supporting a fleet with its Space Dart anti-ship missiles. Only six vessels are in service.

Length: 230m
Loaded weight: 3080t

Armament:
2 Kinetic Kill Cannon turrets
1 Missile Bay
1 Space Dart anti-ship missile launcher
Point Defense Array

Athena-class Destroyer

Image

A more recent design, the Athena is fast and maneuverable for a vessel of its size. It is heavily armed, with a pair of wing-mounted laser cannons, and numerous KKC turrets. The Jovian Confederation navy has 13 of these vessels in service. (note: the wings extend above and below the ship, so you don't see them in a top view)

Length: 291m
Loaded weight: 3900t

Armament:
2 Kinetic Kill Cannon turrets
4 Kinetic Kill Cannon fixed mounts
2 Laser Cannons
2 Missile Bays
Point Defense Array

Valiant-class Strike Carrier

Image

One of the fastest warships in existence, the Valiant-class has proven to be remarkably resilient, and is likely to become the pride of the Jovian fleet. While it usually hangs back and relies mainly on its strike craft and exo armors for offensive capability, ships that wander too close to it are in for a nasty surprise-- a Spinal Laser capable of slicing most warships in half. Only three of these vessels exist, with another three planned for production.

Length: 320m
Loaded weight: 5000t

Armament:
2 Kinetic Kill Cannon turret
Missile Bay
Spinal Laser
Point Defense Array

Godsfire-class Supercarrier

Image

A recently refitted design, the Godsfire is one of the most advanced ships in existence. With an advanced communication array, it serves as the command center for a strike fleet. Only one vessel of this class exists, with another two proposed. (note: in terms of BSF this ship isn't that great, due to the weapons placement, and nothing to simulate the comm system with)

Length: 368m
Loaded weight: 15000t

Armament:
2 Kinetic Kill Cannon turrets
2 Particle Accelerator Cannon turrets
Missile Bay
Point Defense Array

Central Earth Government and Administration

Bricriu-class Corvette

Image

The most numerous vessel of the CEGA fleet, the Bricriu design predates the formation of CEGA itself. It is impressively armed for a vessel of its size. 325 vessels are in service.

Length: 200m
Loaded weight: 4000t

Armament:
2 Kinetic Kill Cannon turrets
2 Beam Cannon turrets
Point Defense Array

Uller-class Missile Cruiser

Image

The Uller is capable of laying down a hail of missile fire from its two forward missile bays. However, its main punch comes from the Harpoon shipkiller missiles it carries. Eleven vessels are in service.

Length: 175m
Loaded weight: 6500t

Armament:
2 Long-range Missile Launchers
2 Medium-range Missile Launchers
Harpoon anti-ship Missile Launcher
Point Defense Array

Hachiman-class Destroyer

Image

The workhorse of the CEGA fleet, the Hachiman is a medium-sized destroyer. It is heavily armed, with two heavy Particle Cannon turrets and two Laser Cannon turrets making up the main armament. The CEGA navy fields 34 of these vessels.

Length: 208m
Loaded weight: 5500t

Armament:
2 Particle Accelerator Cannon turrets
2 Laser Cannon turrets
2 Missile Bays
Point Defense Array

Tengu-class Escort Carrier

Image

The Tengu is designed for one purpose-- to ferry its exo-armors into battle. It is lightly armed, but fast for its size. 87 of these vessels are in service.

Length: 250m
Loaded weight: 3000t

Armament:
2 Missile Bays
Point Defense Array

Poseidon-class Battleship

Image

The pride of the CEGA fleet, the Poseidon is a heavily-armed warship. While it carries exo-armors, it mainly relies on its heavy weapons to engage other ships, while relying on smaller ships as escort. CEGA has five of these vessels in service.

Length: 325m
Loaded weight: 15000t

Armament:
2 Particle Accelerator Cannon turrets
4 Kinetic Kill Cannon turrets
Missile Bay
Point Defense Array

"A waifahr-theen shep."

That self-destructs in another ship's belly, catastrophically bursting the victim.

Great Show!

My son and I dropped a bunch of these into the sandbox for a big Jovians versus CEGA brawl. It was a really fun fight to watch.

Heh, I have both of the Heavy Gear games. Damn good games, they were. Especially the second one.
