Bran spanking new to this game... sort of
Hey guys, first time on these forums and first time trying to make good ships. I was wondering if theres any guides in perticular that are helpful. I just tend to go for the fighter looking front with the star trek ass (i.e nacelles) and then i hop it up with atleast 40 flak and a couple heavy weapons, i'll provide some pics after. I've seen what you guys are doing and it just blows my mind. Any and all advice will be helpful as well and all critics are welcome as i could use a good kick in the ass for the amount of stuff i put on the ships
The Athena my latest
The Atlantia
The Achilles
And my first, The Atlas

Oh no...
I don't know where to begin.
Take everything that isn't a section.
Unstretch all the sections.
Turn off parneting (hit p)
Take screenshot at default zoom (Home)
And then we'll talk. It'd be easier to discuss with just hulls.

Yeah ok...
Initial shock aside:
First off, you basically want to have an idea of what shape you want, then try to fill it up with a variety of sections. Try to avoid stretching, as we now have more than enough custom sections (see Custom Content section for downloads) to make that a non-issue.
Weapons should flow into your design (as in, appear integrated), not cover it. With weapon depthing (w), this has become even easier.
Some people like to make a sketch of how the want something, something like this.

isn't the whole point of a battle ship to provide as little space facing the enemy as possible?

That's true, but you don't see warships completely covered in weapons . Realistically (I know, it's a space game, lol, but still), a ship won't be able to handle and power all the weapons systems.Link wrote:isn't the whole point of a battle ship to provide as little space facing the enemy as possible?

Shipmaking is more of an art here at Wyrdysm, so weapons are often ditched for the general appeal of the whole structure. Not getting what i'm talking about? See the "Holy Ships" sticky.
As for importing sprites, Kaelis's sprites are good to start out with. And there's also more stickies in the "Shipmaking Info" subforum to help you import them.
You can import a sprites.ini (or create a new one yourself, though I don't know of any way of doing that other than writing it line-by-line in a text editor).
Oh wait...
Hit "`" (the "~" button), Hit "z", then scroll using 1,2,3,4. I think dragging/dropping onto the sidebar there works. Don't quote me on this.
