Well it seems I'm popping back in for a visit

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Well it seems I'm popping back in for a visit

Post by InkFox »

EDIT: hey guys, kinda back for an update; maybe remembered, maybe not; either way check the most recent post I've redone some stuff on your request and even thrown in some new ships :)

Now that I have the ability to show my ships I feel obliged to.
These aren't my first ships, but I'd ask you aren't too harsh because I am still rather new.

Image
From left to right: Hornet-Hive class Carrier, Banhammer class Battleship, Civilian Freighter, Defiance class Frigate, Stringer class Corvette

Image
Left to right: Lionheart class Dreadnought, Emperor class Battlecarrier

You'll notice they're all based on the frigate, that is because when one's fleet has a chassis that works: why change it? I do see the depthing error on the sabot cannon (cleverly disguised as a railgun) on the Lionheart, it'll be fixed and re-uploaded if I'm not too lazy.

So fire away, comments, concerns, criticisms or otherwise smart remarks ^-^

Not much to say I'm afraid. These are perfectly good ships. Any nitpicks come down to personal taste rather than empirical quality.

May benefit from color, or doodads.

I wish I could build like this, I have the eyes and creativity, just not the time. O enough about me, I love them and the cute runways too! Gray works for them I think but hey if you can color them well then be our guest...but if you fail find a flame suit FAST!
Couldn't get the stupid avatar thingy to work so I just stuck myself in here.

I tried a few colors, like orange the best so I'm toying around with it.
the runways are thanks to someone who seems to have slipped my mind, I'll re-find it and post a link if you like

My flame suit is never far form my computer, this is the internet after all.

Great ships for a beginner. You've really created the depth. The next thing to work on is probably flow and other colors. Keep it up!

le ghasp! I seem to have found my weakness (in my opinion, then again I though my first try was iffy too)

yeah about that depth... I think I killed it when I tried to color :(

And so I curiously venture into the world of shipbuilding, unsure of what I might find...

This sort of color scheme that you're using is typically just for accents, not for depthing. I'd recommend you use a single color and apply it to sections that aren't being used to give the ship depth, or to all sections of the same depth. It will look simpler.

I don't like your runways. The SW section style doesn't look good on big, low-detail sections. I recommend you look around at other carriers (I think Darkship has at least one really good one from the pre SW era) and see how they handle doodad based runways, or even runway-less carriers with "ports" and linear glows.

Other than that, these ships are a bit above average, but nothing too new or different. Fairly generic "Terran" designs. Take a look at the Holy Ship thread if you haven't already.

Oh, and if you're using Paint for screenshots, save as PNGs. JPG will give you lots of compression artifacts, as is evident in your screenshots.

Another ship for the fleet, Archer Class Gunship

there's what I'm looking for thanks sponge
I'll give the coloring a try, but I'll hold off attempting a different style for a bit; I'm liking this one for now.

As for the runways I see your point, they don't look good; especially with the detail of the other sections I use. I'll toy around with it, see if I can find another way of doing it I like.

thanks for the help :)

EDIT: Update

Another one, kinda exactly the last one but with tesla's not sabots

Colors would be good for accents, and some doodads would be nice.

So, all of your carriers are very samey. Only the central part is just slightly long and maybe has a few extra weapons on it. Why send the big expensive one when you can send the smaller, cheaper one with the same, big exposed fighter bays? I think the biggest carrier might look better without the fighter bays attached. Just use it as a destroyer escort or something. Also, on that big carrier, the railgun on the left is not properly depthed (or the one on the right isn't? I think you meant them both to be depthed).

These are awesome! Most of the criticism I can think of has already been said, but I wanted to compliment you on your placement of weapons. Thought it could be cleaned up somewhat, all those weapons give them a mean look. Only thing I would say is give each gun it's own emplacement. That would complete the look for me. Also your choice of struts could be a bit more imaginitive. Still, I will have fun fighting these if you release them.

These are fairly solid looking ships. I like the colouring (it gives it a sort of rusty look), but like others have said, the shape is fairly generic, and the runways on the carriers look rather "flat", almost like they're painted on the outer hull, as opposed to them leading from the inside of the ship.

Apart from that, they are fairly good ships. Keep it up!

one tiny nitpick, ofcourse its your ship, but a dreadnought with combat craft, mybe if it was for scouts or something, but i think it would look better if you'd replace those runways with a few different sections, other than that.

i like them all. :D :D :D
