Cooparative scavenger fleet

Ok so the deal here is that Maarten and I have decided to build a fleet together. It will be expanded as we go, and others are welcome to join but the idea here is just to be creative.
GUIDELINES(rough)
You are a group of engineers aboard the Confederation fast axillary depot ship, "Reliance". The Confederation has fallen apart; it's fleets spread thin across it's many star systems and destroyed, it's worlds rendered mostly uninhabitable by one or more of your enemies. All that is irrelevant now as you struggle to survive!
*Whoever wants to can submit undamaged ships. These don't have to be new, you could have released them somewhere else, but I'd prefer to have a variety, not just warships but cruise liners, freighters, transports, even a station or two.
*Once a ship is submitted and agreed upon, make it damaged. This could be done with damaged sprites if you have them or as we create them along the way. Remember to release them to the others though! If not, just simulate battle damage by deleting various sections, or even run it through battle to get an idea of how it would look damaged. The .shp file must be modified to reflect this damage though, and it must be crippling damage including missing engines, weapons, and sensors since anything less wouldn't have killed the crew or prevented them from continuing the fight!
*Once we 'find' a damaged ship, we will decide if it is salvageable using what parts we have available or can manufacture on the Reliance, or if we should break it down for scrap (in which case we get all the sections to repair the next ships with). If we need to manufacture a part, we will have to enter a star system and find a planet or asteroid field to mine. There won't be any values for sections, but we have to make a run regardless if we don't have another section to use and want to repair that part of a ship.
*There will be battles that this fleet will have to survive, so the faster we can improvise armor, engines(yes, a ship with no engines won't be able to move during battle), and weapons, the better. Battles will occur randomly as pirates or aliens attack the fleet in deep space, or in a star system which is occupied or where there are other scavengers/raiders.
Ship guidelines
As I said, they don't have to be new ships but to make all things equal:
*Try to keep weapons stock for now.
*Keep them relatively small. All the major warships(that we know of) were destroyed so if you do submit a huge ship, expect to have to make it very damaged and not likely be able to salvage it.
*Try to make the ships fit a niche. Various types of warships, but also whatever other functions you can think of. Mining, construction, exploration, etc. It is important that you not give a mining ship a bunch of weapons though because a real one wouldn't have any. The whole point here is to add stuff to them in a creative way.
Battle guidelines
*Battles will be run by me for now, unless we decide to alternate.
*Attacking fleets will probably be stock(which is another reason to leave the weapons stock) unless someone wants to be ambitious and design raiders.
*When a battle is about to start, all ships in the fleet will be loaded, either in deep space, an asteroid field, or near a planet. These all present inherent dangers, for example in deep space if engines are damaged severely, we will have to scrap the ship or abandon it.
*If the fleet is more than 50% damaged, I will sound a retreat. At that point though, we will not be able to salvage or return for any resources or critically damaged ships.
*During a battle, one ship will be controlled by the player staging the battle, while the others will be AI controlled.
*Results will be posted after a battle in the form of screen shots with a narrative of the battle.
If I think of anything else or am giving suggestions, I will add to this.
