WIP: Swordbreaker Class

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

WIP: Swordbreaker Class

Post by Ixranin »

I haven't built a ship in quite a while, and this project was a good reminder why I don't build ships anymore.

Swordbreaker Class, Advanced Drone Battlecruiser:

Image
Second Image: A slightly older version with a sun behind it to make the structure easier to see.

Weapons:
  • 1x Lucidina Drone System: 12 Assault Drones, 2 Decoy Drones, stored in the boxy structure on the ship's port side.
4x Axiom LR Particle Cannon: Long-range cannons designed to allow the ship to throw shots quickly, without having to wait for the drones to deploy. Two mounted beside the core, and two at the front.
5x Gnat Interceptor Drone Launcher: Fast moving solo drones, designed to ram into enemy fighters and gunships. Mounted along the front of the core.
2x Axiom Energy Stream Blaster: Fires long and fast shots that have a chance of piercing into more vital systems. Meant to discourage lighter ships from flanking. Mounted near the engine, on either side.
5x Skirma Point Defense Gun: Mounted along the centerline.
Nearly finished, mostly just touch-ups left to do, building the ship's shield, then writing up the backstory. The blade-like design is explained in the backstory.

WHOAH!!! It's half a ship... I rather like it ^^

What exactly is the square thingy that looks as if to be hanging haphazardly upon the side? Also, the end looks rather thin, looks like it could be snapped off too easily, leaving one gun short.

and two we find before.
We stand behind before we find

I dislike the boxy hangar, but the rest of the ship is really fabulous. Good job.

Nothing is forever. It can't be. 'Cause everyone changes.

The boxy hanger needs the companion cube sprite on it  The whole thing is awesome looking, something I would mount on a station's edge to spin around and cut stuff up. I hope that edge can cut...And its not a half ship, I like the asymmetry very much.

Why does it look like a side view to me?

I'm going to be honest with you, I don't like it. Technically, there's nothing wrong with it. But something about it works for me like a red scarf works for a bull. The repeated little blocks among the side, the large boxy structure, the simple fragility of the whole...eeewgh.

I wouldn't be so worried about the particle gun, as much as losing the engine basically hamstrings the ship.

It doesn't cut. <_< The ship's abilities match with its class name, Swordbreaker.

The ship is pretty damn fragile without it's shield. Though I made sure to bury important structural parts beneath armor, BSF's hit-detection is wonk when it comes to fast projectiles. There's a structural rod running down the center of the blade, buried beneath all the armor, yet it's always the first piece that blows up.

Summary of the backstory that explains the design: Ordered built by the nation's Emperor, based on an archaic weapon, and that it had to be fully functional in combat or it'd be off with the engineers' heads. The starboard side of the ship projects a powerful shield, allowing the Swordbreaker to hold off enemy fire while other ships in the fleet fire from its cover. Due to the shield's massive power conumption, drones were chosen as the primary weapon because they could be charged between fighting, and required little power during combat. Despite this, the original function of the ship is to be a status symbol, and it's mainly used to guard a particular planet or to escort high-level officials.

Looks good, kind of looks like the profile of a upside down ship.

Put together the shield:

Image

I was originally shooting for a plasma effect, and all was going well until I noticed the file size and that it was going to be 120 frames of animation. Ended up simplifying it down to a mere 10 frames of it scrolling to the left to avoid making it ridiculously huge. The ship already lags the game enough with all its sections and drone system.

Action Shots:

- A Swordbreaker opens fire with its non-drone weapons.

- A simulation with two Swordbreakers shows one attempting to ward off the other's drones.

epic.... reminds me of a gitar.. gitaur... geetaire... how do you spell it? my spell check broke.

anyways, 120 frames?! that's a lot, and i'm glad you saw fit to simplify it. a lot of the computers i use can barely run a hiestia... but that's a pretty kick**s parrier.

I don't like it. The ship uses several different design schemes, and the end result is something that looks like it was slapped together from chunks of other ships. A few examples of what I'm talking about:
-The bottom front features a long, thin section; this style is present nowhere else.
-The middle bottom features a repeated shape, but this shape is present nowhere else.
-The back has lots of empty space mixed with prominent horizontal struts-- neither of these design styles are found elsewhere.
-The drone carrier is a square, a shape found nowhere else.
-The reactor and its covering are circular. No circles anywhere else.
-The back thruster looks like one well placed shot would cleave it off. I get the impression that it was added as an afterthought.

It's not a terrible ship, but it's missing a consistent design direction. Also, the new shield is as thick as the ship. If it were 25-20% as thick, it would look much better. As it stands, it's really bizarre, and makes bullets look crappy when they fly over it.

Guitar. And I don't see how this resembles a guitar at all.

You obviously didn't live through the 80s...

The shield is awesome. Also, my bad for misunderstanding the name, simply reminded me of Eri's orbital sword. Plus by that train of thought, finally something that might block that ship's swing!
