Warhammer 40,000 Ships

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Warhammer 40,000 Ships

Post by RayvenQ »

First Installment.

Image

From Left to Right

Thunderhawk
Thunderhawk Crusader
Thunderhawk Crusader with Missles.

Weapons

Thunderhawk - 4 Twinlinked Heavy Bolters (Modified Pulses)

Thunderhawk Crusader - 4 Twinlinked Heavy Bolters, Twin linked Lascannon (Railgun)

Thunderhawk Crusader with Missles - 4 Twinlinked Heavy Bolters, Twin linked Lascannon, Missile Launchers (Unmodified)

Pros

Can put up a veritable Barrage of Bolter fire, screening all but the most determined and heavily armoured fighters and bombers.

The Lascannon can pack a good first initial punch, followed up by missles and then heavy bolter fire (Crusader with Missles only)

Cons

Outer weapons (Bolters) easily damaged/destroyed.

Outer Sections easily damaged/destroyed.

The Lascannon on the Crusaders have a VERY narrow field of fire, having to face the enemy/incoming fire.

The front is very vulnerable and if taken out, will irreperably damage most of the ship.

Use against anything other than fighters/bombers/incoming objects or weapons is highly inadvisable.

(I've tried to keep the weapons similar to their 40K counterparts but at the same time tried to balance it out.

They are all half the size of the Athena/Hecate.

The only real problem is not being able to shrink the visuals of the weapons.

I think you're onto something there though, no wonder they're so destructive, they have Short Man syndrome

But yeah you have a point, I'll start working on them more to put more detail onto them (up to a certain point anyway)

Those are unmitigatedly horrible.

They don't hold up as ships, having repetition, mirroring errors, and generally poor construction.

As fan-ships they're even worse, since they're too small go give any real indication of the fact that they are meant to be Thunderhawks.

Well, thanks to your deep insight, and detailed analysis, I can of course now make it absoloutley perfect in your eyes.

I know Constructive criticism isn't exactly common on these forums, so I won't hold that against you.

Welcome! Unfortunately hes right though. I think you have the general shape but not alot of definition beyond that. Biggest turnoff is having multiple 9s. Also theres details missing like the wing struts and cockpit. I'm sure you will do better with somewhat larger ships.

*edit* Even in five minutes you should be able to make a more recognizable ship than what you have; try putting more detail into it like this.. I took liberties because I can't see much of the ship in your picture. You should try working from a top down photo, it helps.

I think you're missing the point. Venator is a respected shipbuilder here and you would be wise to listen to him.

Yes, you've made ships which look like thunderbolts. But the techniques used are pretty poor by the current shipbuilding standards. I could spawn a single section 13 and call it a death star, but it wouldn't be any good because it had involved very little effort and skill.

My advice would be to take a look at AD's fanship thread and overall, build bigger. This way you can fit in a lot more details, and avoid the horrors of repetition, overstretching and mirroring errors.

See Exethalion, I don't mind posts like yours as you've actually put in effort to not only state what is wrong with it but also give suggestions as to how to improve, as did jwa8402, though I suppose I should have posted that I'd be hoping for constructive criticism.

jwa, that's not quite right, could point out the wrong things but I won't as I appreciate you trying.

I think the main problem was that I was trying to make it smalland from memory, I'm working on another one now, much bigger, though some of you may shoot me for how messy the frame of it is

Here's the WIP of the new one, please don't shoot! *Ducks*

Forgive the slightly messy wings, that's the framework which I'm going to pretty up once I've gotten the base done, it's pretty much the sections forward of the core that are, to me, done, though I'm sure I'll be twiddling with bits and pieces.

Well now, that's a heck of an improvement!

There's still some unpleasant section choices, but it's shape is pretty much exact so far. Things to note before going further would be the Section 03's on the rear edge of the main wings, and the forward wing edges in general.

Also, colouring can make all the difference, particularly in this kind of ship: The struts supporting the main wings should have a different colour from the hull to distinguish them, and varying the shades of the hull itself wouldn't hurt.

Still, though, it's a massive leap (the first person to say "quantum" gets beaten with a Q-Phys textbook) from the original.

Thanks, the edge of the Section 3's are going to be hidden when the wing is finalised and gussied up. As I said, what you see on the wings now is mostly framework, getting the shape right and then adding things/layering existing ones to make it look a bit more interesting ind less repetetive.

I should point out that the picture isn't directly above, it's at a slight angle (hence it will be mirrored), and it's also a bottom-up view rather than a top down.

I should have known that sooner or later some warhammer 40k player was going to do this
