My first ships

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

My first ships

Post by hamsterman »

I am trying my hand at this shipmaker thing, and this is what I have so far. I have not colored any of the ships yet, and am open to suggestions.

The Mako-class cruiser is the most powerful ship in the fleet. It sports heavy shielding, two rapidfire particle accelerators, and a hard-hitting energy beam. It is also equipped with a jumpdrive.

The Wobbegong-class cruiser is designed for fleet support. It can wear the enemy down from a safe distance with its long-range plasma cannon while healing allied ships with its nanomatrix, interdict enemy warheads with its 6 point defense lasers, and escape from harm with its jumpdrive. It also has two rapidfire energy beams to fend off light attacks.

Image
The Piranha-class destroyer is a step down from the Mako, but still packs a formidable punch with its three energy beams.

Piranha engages the enemy.

Image
The Betta-class frigate is designed to outmaneuver and flank enemy ships, while blasting them with a steady stream of firepower. It is equipped with two light rapidfire particle accelerators and a plasma cannon.

Image
The Remora-class frigate serves a fleet-support role with its three point-defense lasers. It is equipped with a single rapidfire energy beam, which isn't very effective in battle. On the other hand, it is the fastest ship in the fleet, so it can easily seek out zones of safety.

They're quite good actually. But replace some of the Aegis with higher HP sections as armor. And let us see your parenting, press 'P' in Ship Maker to see the parenting lines. Are they stock balanced?

Quite good for a start... Try to colour 'em a bit, and less Aegis... Other than that, they look decent to say the least, some of 'em even look quite good. Definetely a style of your own, too, which is good... So, colors and less Aegis and you're on your way to a shipbuilding greatness.

Not bad for stock-like ships. Most of the tactical roles you describe are irrelevant anyway, since the aegis makes them sturdier than any stock ship even when tanking.

Yeah. Please cut on the aegis. That'd make them a lot better, as contradictory as it may sound.

Apart from that, they seem nice. Good shapes, decent weaponry. Keep it up.

Not bad for starting ships.

All I can say is... others have said, lay off the aegis until you fully understand how it works. It's not your usual shielding in BSF.

Another thing you could do is replace aegis with deflectors. They're not as "cheap" plus they don't make half the ship glow continuously

from a visual standpoint, consider making your aegis near black, as that cuts some of the glow.

as others have said, just omitting the aegis altogether and replacing it with armor is better, but deflectors are also a good alternative. also, realize that using too much aegis really screws up balance, and makes battles much less interesting.

Honestly, I don't care about the aegis at all, most people use it for a while until they find out it usually detracts from the ship. And I really like these, they're very nice small ship designs, that have good section placement.

Same as bovine said except that, if used right, the aegis can look cool. try using them for effects rather then for tactical purposes. check my tread for a few examples (which I think are good but thats up to the individual. )

I really like them. And I hate to be redundant, but Aegis is better used for things like reactors and engines. Instead of having those sections Aegised, increase their HP by a significant amount or use ablative armor. In case you don't know, Ablative armor is little pieces like 7s, 8s, and 9s that take fire instead of the larger piece. Think meatshields.

A question: How did you get an enemy Moira?

For that matter, how do people get enemy *anything normal* besides the Cronus?

EDIT: Oh yeah. Get rid of teh Aegis.

@ Skull. In the sandbox modes there are two buttons for enemies, one that gives you a number prompt and another that asks for a .shp file. Look through the folders and you should find the other ships.

If your gonna use aegis its fine. There are plenty of balanced ways to break aegis, and if you lower the hp of the shielded sections it will still work but can then be taken down but multiple ships or clusters of weapons, even stock. If your just going for the glowy effect look into the transparent sections.
