Can you use invisible Plasma Charges to do actual damage while the other stuff does the graphical effect?

You can use a Pulse weapon to mimic the flak projectile, on Homeworld 2 flak shells are relatively small.

Nice idea, ASmonkey I like it :D. Got a new ship to add, will be up tomorrow, along with an updated carrier and flak frigate that will look to use monkey's weapon idea.

Well, I like your capital ships. Very impressive, that.

The frigates, corvettes, and fighters, not so much. They just don't look right. :?

I'd like to see your rendition of the Mothership. It'd look weird to use, but I'm sure you'd do an awesome job of it, nevertheless.

The promised update:

Hiigaran Light cruiser:
Image

Approx. 2/3 of the dimensions of the Battlecruiser, the Light Cruiser is designed to bridge the huge power gap between Destroyers and BCs. Equipped with fearsome batteries of Kinetic Cannons it is easily capable of rapidly destroying smaller ships whilst retaining sufficient manoeuvrability to pursue or evade larger ships. It is also capable of mounting a utility module such as a hyperdrive for enhanced tactical capabilities. Despite its size, however, even two of these ships struggle to engage a Battlecruiser.

A small cosmetic update for the frigates, giving them much better accuracy to the in game models at hardly any module increase! Well yeah, it's a SMALL cosmetic update, but hey.
Image
oh lol, ignore the random demeter on the flak frigate... some people around here need to learn how to mirror correctly >.>

An even smaller update is the addition of a section 9 to the noses of the two smaller corvettes - just makes the shape a little better and more accurate. Not worth a pic though...

LGT, if you can more specifically say what you don't like about the little ships it would be a help ;) Have you seen them in game? There's only so much detail that an interceptor can have on it, and most of that's lost due to the size of the damn things - same applies to the corvettes really, but I thought the corvettes were pretty good compared to HW2.

Fleet download updated, with tweaks to almost all ships.

Prettiest brick I've seen untill now. Small nitpick; your ships seem to be mirrored in relation to the reference pictures.

yeah on both points - this hull is perhaps the least impressive for the Hiigarans that I've seen, with the exception of a variant that lacked any detailing on it whatsoever :S. As it was I still had to mess around with detailing n stuff to avoid too much ugly repetition. So yeah. it's a space brick, but fuck it, it's better than a space wang.

As to the flipping, a couple of reference picks are flipped cos I took them the wrong way around, lol. The way that I've doe them is (I believe) the way the originals are.

Bolded the probable crux of the issue. They have the general shape, but when you get close it just doesn't look all that similar.

Please understand that I don't think you've done anything wrong. The formula just worked best for capital ships, is all. ;)

On a side note, where did that light cruiser come from? Is it from a mod? :?

You can also mod the defensive flak gun in the game so it does more damage then when in game change it from defensive fire mode to offensive fire mode. It won't intercept fire any more but it will fire on and damage any enemy ship that is within range like any other gun does

Yeah LGT, the cruiser is taken from FX Mod, though the model is used quite commonly, eg in Tactical Fleet Sim [TFS], and (probably) PDS mod. There's a crappy version that's pretty much an unchanged transport ship from the second level used in EX Mod as an ion cruiser, but it is completely full of fail, imo. I've found a smaller destroyer variant in TFS with some wings (?!), but beyond that there seems to be little new for the Hiigarans beyond weapon reconfigurations in different mods. No offence taken about the strike craft, though again I personally quite like the corvettes for their simplicity (there's something nice about making a four section craft after a few titanic capital ships...). Then again, you're not supposed to be zooming in on them - you're meant to be watching the capital ships duking it out, with the corvettes and fighters providing light relief in the form of arrayed explosions decorating the edges of the battlescape, lol.

I might do as -someone- suggested and make an ion destroyer variant, but I'd really appreciate it if anyone could point me in the direction of some unique Hiigaran capital ship models - are there any in any of the pds mod variants?

As to flak weapons, I've gone with plasma torps as the base. Too bad it's hard as hell to recolour them, though i got a nice unique orange-and-green tint going on. They work as they should, what with aoe damage n all that... the only problem is that their fast projectile speed (needed to hit fighters, in case you were wondering) makes them pretty good at sniping other frigates' weapons... so they double as both anti strike-craft and anti frigate, lol.

Theoretically, I could drastically reduce fighter hp and flak damage, thus making the weapons worse against corvettes and turrets, but then I'd probably have to go through every single point defence gun in the fleet and tone their damage down... and I already had to go over every PD gun on the BC to tweak them, and that took a while...

As to using the Flak gun as an offensive weapon, I normally let the AI duke it out in epic battles, since player control tends to be better and I like my fights balanced, and as such that wouldn't work as the AI doesn't switch modes on its point defence. Pulse guns are no better than any other basic projectile in that they would have to be fired as an obvious shotgun spread. Plasma Torps are ultimately superior because you can set the aoe but still have an invisible projectile. It's just a shame that they don't stack well with pulsars.

*edit - frigate update pic added to my previous post*

try looking at the complex mod for hiigaran cap ships.

Gah, I don't have the patience to get to capital ships in Complex mod :( that and i'm normally besieged by the time I've started the production of my first destroyer... No idea why, but I just fail at complex mod, when I can trounce expert ai half asleep on any other...

Oh, and complex mod stopped working a while ago so I threw it out. I think my Hw2 folder's full of random mod files left over from far too much experimenting, but I've lost my disk, so meh. Wish I could get BSG mod working... :(

If I get the patience back I might give complex another shot - mebby try it on easy ;) You'll know if I do cos there could be a few new ships added to this thread, heh.

I rather like your rendition of the Battleship the most. At close looking to any big ship, it's difficult to tell what is what, so I'm cool with that. XD

Brick-shaped space craft ain't my thing usually, since the front - however practical that it absorbs most incoming damage - doesn't look nice to me. However these ships you've remade are very impressive. :3

As Arcane said: Prettiest brick I've seen untill now. I agree with him, and do I see a crab/lobster thing in front of the fore cannon of the Light Cruiser (In the reference pic).
And while I was playing HW2 while watching Space Battleship Yamato, I realized that maybe the modeller was watching it too while he was making the Destroyer.

That's one of the default 'badges' that you can select to customise the appearance of your ships.

Yeah, most of the Hiigaran command bridges are located on the starboard side of the ships, so you have done them correctly.
What's causing your reference pictures to become flipped?

That 'Hiigaran Light Cruiser' model looks like someone copy/pasted the Shuttle hull and stuck guns on it... :-|
...Your BSF version, however, makes it look much better.
