FreeSpace 2 Ships - Corvettes (Corvettepack available!)

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

FreeSpace 2 Ships - Corvettes (Corvettepack available!)

Post by Slominator »

Time to make some corvettes! I'm attemping to import the 3 corvettes from the space sim FreeSpace 2 into BSF. I will try to be as true to the originals as I can. I may decide to do some other things in this thread if I don't take too long with the corvettes. The thread for the cruisers can be found here.

I'm finally done with the corvettes! There's a "NoGlow" version of the SCv Moloch with no doodads included in the zip. The ships in the pack will be significantly different from the originals mainly because of the redesigned weapons.

The GTCv Deimos is one of my favorite ships so I'm doing it first.

Full Description:
Deimos-class corvettes, such as the GTCv Actium and the GTCv Lysander, are the newest addition to the Terran fleet. These sleek, ultra-modern warships are the products of a new era of ship design, maximizing maneuverability and firepower. Their hulls are strengthened with collapsed-core molybdenum sheathing for better protection against beam fire, and their Vasudan-designed reactor core provides more energy per ton than any other allied ship class. As the Leviathan and Fenris cruisers of the Great War are gradually phased out, these corvettes will become the foundation of tomorrow's fleet.

This should be the final version of the hull.

Nice.

Can't wait to see the SCv Moloch, my favorite FS2 ship shape-wise :P

I don't know a thing about freespace but from the ref pic I think the turrets should be square and you should add doodads for the yellow lights.

Otherwise it looks exactly like the ship.

The turrets on the hi poly model are round-ish and the lights are not very visible from the top. The mission editor loads a low poly version of the ships. I look at both models and usually try to make it like the hi poly version.

You haven't even finished the first ship yet and I'm loving it.

BTW: I know BSF contains to perfect square shapes, but you seem to have circles on the ship where there should be squares. That is the only problem I can think of, and it's incredibly petty. Can't wait to see the finished product!
No, wait, go back! Why are there six pedals if there are only four directions?

The turrets are supposed to be round, IMO.
They're only square because the original game designers wanted to cut down on detail so the computers in 1998 wouldn't DIE from LAG. If you look at the top picture (the high-poly one), they are round.

Btw, Slominator I would actually view these in PCS2 (open MV_Assets.vp, and look for the ship models.) That way, you can see the high-poly versions. But then, you do need to much around with several tools. That is what I used to view the HTL SD Ravana when I built mine, though.

The GTCv Deimos is done! I had to change the hull a bit to fix some issues, but it's still just as accurate if not more accurate to the HTL model. The SCv Moloch is next on my list.

Hooray for terslashes! I'm assuming the weasels are supposed to be piranha launchers? It looks like a brick, but the Deimos is pretty much the brickiest ship in the game.

Anyway, nice work as usual, looking forward to the Moloch.

Never played Freespace 1 or 2, but they look like the screenshots. They're much better than any of the various fanships I've done.

It looks that way from the top, but the true brick is the Orion, at least the Deimos has curves in the hull.

This is the brickiest ship in the game, IMO (wait, the TC-TRI and GTT Elysium come close). The Deimos actually has some curves :D

Yeah, but the Orion has other bricks coming out of the main brick, making it less...bricky.

Now that I think about it, the Deimos actually looks a bit like a tiny Colossus to me, what with that extra set of engines on that stick coming out of the bottom.

The weasel gun is the closest thing to a Piranha or any other cluster Missile that I know of. I might do a couple of freighters or maybe the Mjolnir Sentry gun after the Moloch if enough people are interested.

SCv Moloch

Full Description:
Only one class of Shivan ship is classified as a corvette - the SCv Moloch class. Though they're physically as large as the GTCv Deimos class, Molochs do not seem to pack the same punch. They are far more deadly than any Shivan cruisers, however.

This should do it for the hull. It's mostly like the High Poly model but the "spikes" are more like the Low Poly model. I'll fix the coloring and then add glowmaps like the SC Rakshasa has.
