I have tried this with a few designs. Please experiment and see how you get on.
1) Make a brawler style vessel. Set its acceleration to between 0.1 and 0.01.
2) Set its top speed to 5 or 6
3) Set its turn speed to between 0.5 and 0.75
4) Set its AI range to between 5 and 100
5) Spawn one in the top left of the map.
5) Spawn an alien dreadnought in the bottom right
7) Tell it to attack
Watch as it gains speed, decelerates to late, passes right through the enemy vessel and spins on the other side.
I made a ship called the broadsword that does just this. Makes a sort of vigorous thrusting motion. Equipped with short range, fast tracking weapons it does a surprising amount of damage to ships as it passes through.
Rather than implement a negative AI Range (something I now see as plagued with complications), could we have separate acceleration and deceleration values?
And those AI Profiles.
BTW Th15, I have a first class degree in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence. If you want a hand figuring generic AI rule sets let me know, if I have time i'l assist.
