I've been lurking here a bit and I finally decided to join :o.
Anyhow I have made some ships and I am trying different techniques to try and make them better.

My first ship, the scinfaxi!

I never really had an idea on what it was going to look like, it was sort of free form in the shipmaker and I decided I liked the design. Though my idea was to have a railgun heavy ship. Its main weapon is a rather powerful mega beam in the middle section and some mixed weapons.
I have since learned how to color the sections, I know it looks pretty bland :<
(Kudos to whoever can guess what I got the name from)

My current project is a currently unnamed battle station. I am still trying to get the hang of the parenting. If you hit it in a certian section enough it can lose a whole quarter of the armor.

first off the HMS Majestic

The Majestic has had a turbulent career, when she was made she was the most powerful battlecruiser in the Zulu sector, with excellent short to long range firepower, excellent armour and shielding, and a fine crew, BUT she has been involved in barely any fighting, because for all her power she has 1 major weakness......politics, High command has been unwilling to send this ship into a major battle for fear of its capture or destruction, much to the annoyance of its crew and captain.

Next the heavy fighter, the Dragonfly

When the Dragonfly was first conceived it was an idea that did not go down too well with pilots who already had enough to do, the Dragonfly on top of normal flying and dogfighting has an added mid mounted turret, which when first made could only be controlled by the pilot via remote control, after the first year of service many Dragonfly's and there pilots were lost to enemy fighters, but the Navy was unwilling to let it die just yet, they made changes to the design, they automated the turret, reducing accuracy, but decreasing pilot workload, after these changes the Dragonfly soon became a favored fighter among pilots, who enjoyed the ability to take down heavy vessels in numbers with there up-gunned Railguns.

Lastly we come to the Humber Bomber

The Humber Bomber is an old workhorse of the Navy, many have tried to replace it, only to fail to its toughness and ability in combat to dish out the pain, in large numbers the Humber can cripple or seriously damage even the heaviest of vessels, by simply swarming it with too many missiles to count, the Humber earned its first major victory in the battle of Corrith pass, an asteroid network regularly used by pirates to smuggle arms which intel learned a high profile criminal was to pass through with his Battleship, the Red Plague, a unit of 18 Humbers waited in the rocks until Red plague passed them by, and then in one blow, ambushed her from the rear, unleashing a terrific salvo of Missiles, crippling her engines and powe rcore, and sending the ship crashing into an asteroid, destroying it instantly without a single loss of life to the Humbers.

This is a screenshot of the ships I've completed so far. Still working on the DS ships. I started with the familiar enterprises and bsg(top and side), then it realized most people seem to make theirs from the top. The claw was a random attempt, the upper right was designed as a dreadnought until I fought another player-made ship after which it was demoted to cruiser class and I finished my most recent 'Virgil'. It is suffering from lack of weapons because I either am not modding them right or my computer simply can't handle the graphics. The previous model just had armor because I was going for a low tech pure terran look but this one has the bubble shield, though im not sure i got it right. Im experimenting with a bunch of nanite modules set to low repair to simulate a shield which gives a cool effect but i have to get the positioning right. Leviathan is in the corner for scale. Next ill probably work on small but detailed ships since my comp seems to handle them better, as well as coloring virgil to give depth and texture. Comments and advice are appreciated

The Goliath cruiser, mainstay of the Armanian fleet in the Zulu sector, and if many others, the Goliath cruiser is a more than capable ship, able to attack from afar, or just scrap in a broadside duel, the Goliath has served the fleet with distinction time and again, However she has weaknesses, she is only lightly armed at the rear, making her vulnerable to faster ships and fighters, to counter this most Captains of Goliaths act with a squad of long range Talon fighters, or in pairs to guard the rear of there ships

It is a star cruiser armed with megabeam and flakcannon.
But it use multiplex armor.So it hp is higher than its look.

konekone0807 and Stella Cadente, ships are OK(I rather like the dragon fly), but so over armed that it hurts my eyes. Scrap 85% of the weapons, make sure the parenting is good, and get rid of some thrusters(everyone that is destroyed costs your ship acceleration). Do that, and you might have a half decent fleet on your hands :)

even though there are ALLOT of weapons (127 on my most recent ship) I usually pit them against similar powered pirate ships of my own design, so it comes out as balanced, against computer designed ones YES its over the top.

Also I think lots of guns blazing away blowing chunks outta things looks damned cool :lol:

and the thrusters are again there mainly for looks, and it makes things interesting when you take heavy thruster damage and you start getting slower
