Yup, that's the triangle inequality in the real numbers, and Pythagoras's theorem. There are actually many triangle inequalities, and antisocialmunky was talking about the triangle inequality in a two dimensional vector space (R^2 for short). I'm actually doing exactly this kind of stuff in Analysis 2 right now...
