Pennsylvania. I'm just making a theme of naming my ships after European places.
Here's a very early WIP; I plan on using this as practice for layered weapons or whatever it was. The super beam will be the only forward-facing weapon; everything else will be broadside, and I plan on thickening it quite a bit.

Edit: I fixed the layering error btw.

About the beams. Do weapons have to have turning and arc range values of at least 1 (or 0.5 which rounds up to 1)? I've been trying to get a beam that only fires in an absolutely straight line but when I bring either of those values down to 0 the weapon doesn't fire.
Edit: Hell, I entered 1 for turning and it still won't fire. This is silly.
Uh, wait nevermind I just had to order it to fire on the enemy ship instead of just plopping the ship down. Guess I'll use attack ground orders to check the beam from now on.

Yeah, the front is pretty much done.
I'm not too worried about the back; I'm working on covering up the ugly parts.
Edit: Keep in mind that I'm still going for the disjointed look; in front of the engines (I'm getting to it) there's going to be definite separation between the middle and the sides.

About the weapons settings, don't make my mistake, test them using AI to see how they function... I made some really cool weapons that the AI can't use worth a darn, and it sounds like your beam would have the same problem. If you set the arc value for 0 then no it won't fire, at 1 the enemy ship has to be directly in front of it for it to fire. Missles are nice that way because you can make them fire in any direction even if the turning is set to 0. Pretty beam, did you layer it?
I have a "completed" hull now, but I'm not satisfied with the engine pods on the back so it's not quite finished. I was aiming to get 4 thrusters to fit in each pod but only managed to get 2; I'm going to have to move the outer two pods further out and expand all of them to fit 4 in.

I'm going to need advice on thruster effects also.

A little hint: Don't make your ships interally hollow, it doesn't make the ship look good.

Again, it's to emphasize the inherent disjointedness of the parenting and make the ship's weakness obvious (the connection between the blue and white sections). It's a build style that I'll probably stick to even if I get constant criticism for it.CheesyErwin wrote:A little hint: Don't make your ships interally hollow, it doesn't make the ship look good.

Added additional side armor to minimize the weakness that the aforementioned parented brings (kinetic missiles to the side usually destroys all the blue sections from the core back).

I probably won't change anything forward of the engines between now and the final design. I'll get back to the engines tomorrow.
