Practice makes decent.

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Practice makes decent.

Post by erdrik »

I hope. lol

Anywho, I made this just to get some practice and let my imagination roam.
(I forgot to add engine glows before taking the screenshot :x Doh!)

Image

The orange/red glowing ring in the center houses 8 slightly customized Mega Beams.
They are attached to Turretsections that allow them to track along the ring. They will also independantly aquire targets.
(but I think the turn rate for the independant tracking may be a tad high lol)
The arcs are such that no more than 4 beams(from the ring) can focus on any one target.
The front glowie also houses 1 slightly customized Mega Beam.

The 2 side wings/pylons have a single Pulsar Gun each.
Customized to fire 5 shots with little to no delay and almost immidiate acceleration.

EDIT: Oop! I forgot, there are 2 point beams.
1 dead center(the very center glow), and 1 sharing the forward glowie section.

Fake Aegis.
I dislike custom sprites for glow on account of collision issues, and my current issues with doodads.
I can't seem to get doodads to appear in the sandbox at all.

If I were you I'd go check my options to see if doodads are enabled. :3

How do i make those sections glow using the "fake aegis"? I can't figure it out by myself, and searching the forums didn't help me either.
Oh well.

I tried it, and indeed got a Aegis effect. However, glows of ships i've seen are smooth and the one i've got isn't. Changing parameters didn't help, anyone knows?

No idea why figuring out what blur and alpha does is so hard, since I stumbled upon it the very first time I used 4.0. http://www.wyrdysm.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4089

More experimentation. New to me, but probly old hat to you all.
Opening weapons platforms/Armor sections.
The Dagger
Image
1x Super Mega Cutter Laser (10 damage 200 duration x 2)
2x Triple Missile Pack (75 damage 125 reload x 3)
Speed 4.5
Acceleration 0.1
Turning 1.5

Blue sections are armor with 500 health.
Grey sections are hull with default health.(~250)

I added animation and triggers so that its weapons will only fire when certain sections are in the appropriate position.
Basicly, a small Targeting laser(mining laser) triggers the section to move into position.
A 300 frame delay in that position allows the weapons to fire.
Once the sections are back in their original position the weapons are inactive again.

Fantastic job you have there. I particularly like the core (power plant?) you have, for reasons that elude me.

However, I think you can further improve on this ship by changing the shade of colours to simulate depth.

Good job :D

3x electron cannons.
The side cannon's sections recoil when they fire.

Im thinking about adding an array of short range electron guns along the hull so as to make an "electron field" that would eat anything that gets too close.
But its pretty overpowered as is and FPS suffers as well... :?

Very nice. I think the glows could use a little work. However I like that you made an unusually shaped ship work well.

Any suggestions for armament? Include placement if you wish.
I decided Im going to remove the electron weaponry, as it is a bit to laggy and I just don't feel it matches the ship very well.
Ive already done lasers and missiles and want something different.
I will look into the weapons myself, but any suggestion/tips are welcome.

erdik, try something that explodes, I think it more matches the ship's battlecruiser potential.

If it really is a battleship / battlecruiser, you can add souped-up demeter drone "fighter escorts" that have extended lifetime and increased damage. I also find slow moving torpedos with really large damage, bad tracking, and slow speed work well for capital ships.
