Looks like the Eclipse-class SSD to me.

NEWSFLASH. 1740|151107:

11 months late and with several heavy modifications to the hull design, assembly of THE GREAT CHEESE was completed at Nihilium Heavy Industries (NHI) Shipyards in orbit around Seraedys Theta yesterday. Critics have lampooned the new vessel as a gross waste of taxpayer money, being over-complicated, underpowered, and full of unproven combat technologies, not to mention an aesthetic eyesore, until the Chief of NHI's design bureau, Dr Novercal Corash, silenced them with the revelation of a brand new protoype just 1 month ago.

The new vessel, product of many months of corrective design work guided by the careful hand of Dr Corash, is now undergoing preliminary combat trials at an undisclosed location. After trillions of New Stilton Dollars, high expectations, and years of hardwork poured into the project , it would unthinkable for the ship performance to be anything less than stellar.

7 deflectors. I got lazy and couldn't be bothered with the colors :P. And yes, it is somewhat mouldy.

Anyway, back to our scheduled programming:

NEWSFLASH.2355|151107: THE GREAT CHEESE MISSING?

Barely one day after THE GREAT CHEESE was launched, the vessel mysteriously vanished from the local sensor grid with all hands aboard. Circumstances of its disappearance are unknown, and still subject to intense speculation from all quarters, ranging from the mundane crew mutiny, sabotage, pirate attacks, etc to far-fetched conjecture such as alien abduction, cannibals, and the ever-present IT'S OVER 9000!!.

All speculation was rendered moot, when just hours after the disappearance, NHI CEO Tregelen Corash announced that THE GREAT CHEESE was actually a smoke screen to cover up the existence of another ship. Corash, with his penchant for somewhat unique, names, has revealed the vessel to be the Big Bad Wedge. It is now known that the Big Bad Wedge was the the original ship that the Commonwealth contracted NHI to build, but fears of terrorist attacks and theft prompted officials to cover up its existence. The Big Bed Wedge, under construction for 8 years now, is nearing complettion at the NHI yards in orbit over Farlindon.

The origins of the new ship are still under a strict blackout, but rumor has it that it is actually based upon plans of an incredibly large vessel from an ancient 2dvid that originally aired on Terra Primaris almost 500 years ago. Analysts are brushing off this theory, suggesting that the very notion of it is almost as ridiculous as the ship's name. Whether or not this fantastic assertion is mere foolish talk awaits to be seen, as does the fate of THE GREAT CHEESE.

NEWSFLASH.0045|161107: BIG BAD WEDGE UNDER ATTACK

The warship Big Bad Wedge, revealed to the galaxy just hours ago, has now come under attack by ships of unknown origin! Details are scarce at the moment but... wait, wait. We are now receiving live footage from the site of the battle itself, in orbit over Farlindon:

...

It appears that the Big Bad Wedge has been.. been.. rammed by THE GREAT CHEESE... The destruction appears to be total.. We are now attempting a reconnection to the satellite.. Standby.. Standby.

(many hours later...)

NEWSFLASH.0205|161107: ALL IS NOT LOST
The utter destruction of the two ships Big Bad Wedge and THE GREAT CHEESE has now been confirmed. Apparently, disgruntled crewmen from the THE GREAT CHEESE, fed up with being assigned to what was essentially a huge block of slightly rotten coagulated milk, mutinied and hijacked the ship along with several smaller vessels. Then, in what appears to be a fit of spite and envy, they performed a suicidal raid on the newly unveiled Big Bad Wedge. It is not known if anyone survived the ensuing explosion.

Most fortunately, the ever-paranoid CEO of NHI took up the onus of constructing a sister vessel in parallel to the Big Bad Wedge. "I mourn the loss of all those brave souls that died today. But the loss of the Big Bad Wedge itself is not a big deal," he announced to a chatroom full of stunned cyberjournalists. "It was painted the wrong colour anyway." It is expected that he will reveal it to public scrutiny shortly.

++END OF SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING++

To cut a long story short, I completed the new ship but wasn't satisfied with is look, so I back-tracked abit and reworked the ship. It will be posted up soon. In the meanwhile, anyone interested in the version that was shown can download this. No weapons at all though!

EDIT: I tried to sign up at the stardestroyer.net forums, but apparently they don't accept free email addresses for registration, only ISP mail addresses, unless I give them 10 bucks. Could anyone here do me the favor of pointing them in the the direction of this thread?

LOL.. Cakecutter! Hahaha..
Well, that 'cakecutter' took 488 sections to make.. No better way to hang a computer, in my opinion :D

Time for a quick update.

NEWSFLASH.2215|161107: ANOTHER BIG BAD WEDGE?
Minutes ago, NHI CEO Tregelen Corash announced the launch of the sister ship to the recently destroyed Big Bad Wedge. In a rare departure from his usual eccentric ship nomenclature, the new vessel has been christened as the Dirge, in honor of all who perished in the petty and cowardly attack this week. To reflect its name, the ship has been repainted in a more suitable colour shade, instead of the originally intended fuschia pink and neon purple scheme.

Image
The Dirge undergoing extensive repainting and construction work.

To ensure that history does not repeat itself, the Dirge has been given an extremely dense point defense network, consisting of over 2800 projectile interceptors located along the outer broadside belt, together with 1700 light flak cannon protecting the interior superstructure, coupled with over 40 deflector grids. Some have criticized this level of protection as excessive for a single vessel, but history is known to repeat itself, and NHI does not wish to take any chances with the new ship. For engaging other capital ships, the Dirge is equipped with 280 Medium and 60 Heavy Particle Cannons, ensure it can take on entire battlegroups by itself and win.

Image
Top view of the Dirge ,showing its armament layout.

A final layer of defense for this mammoth vessel lies in its newly designed escorts. Rumor has it that this new escort shares a strong resemblance to the supposedly classified proof-of-concept design that won NHI their current contract with the Navy, the only difference bing that the original was much, much, much larger. There as been no official confirmation of this rumor as yet.

The Empire class of escort vessels is designed to act as a sturdy fire magnet for its parent, thus it is built to survive heavy punishment, while carrying sufficient armament to ensure that the enemy cannot afford to ignore them. All this protection and fire power comes at the cost of speed, and as such, the Empire is one of the slowest escort vessels ever created, being barely able to outrun the Dirge itself. Of course, with its current set of mission parameters, the lack of speed is not a serious impediment.

All in all, the new crown jewel of the Commonwealth Navy is more than ably defended. The Dirge and its escorts, designated as Battlegroup Tau Sigma, have been assigned to the Naval Yards above Dankton's World for a thorough shakedown run before setting out on their first patrol to the Galactic Core.

++END OF SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING++

I'm really pleased wth the new color scheme, the old one seemed too flat for my taste. Although the number of sections have now almost doubled to a whooping 856.. Apologies to those with slower computers! >.<. I will be working on an optimized version when I find the time. Also, Baby ISD! Sadly, it isn't in the correct scale to the SSD (1:11), instead being in a scale of 1:5, thus putting the SSD at a length of 8km rather than 19. Any smaller and the bridge would be totally obscured by the deflectors. Oh well. Can't always have the cake and eat it, I guess.

Grab the Big Ship and its little brother now!

EDIT: Fixed a parenting error on the small ISD. Link updated. Please re--download. Sorry for any inconvenience!
