First ships I've posted here
I figured it was time enough to stop lurking and actually start posting a few ships, especially because I've got to make quite a few :x . (I'm starting a space-based tabletop RPG, and I'm sortof using it as an excuse to create ships for the players to actually see.)
I don't really have a name for the one above yet, but it's sortof like an escort carrier. It's a bit stolen from something else, but it's fairly obscure and I don't expect anyone to recognize it. Kudos if anyone does, however.
Only one I could think of for the one above is "dagger." It's just a small frigate, and I think I put it together a few months ago to try out the sortof layered shadowing (or something like that) effect.
Also, I figure I might as well combine this with a question.
The ships look like above in game. I can't seem to make them actually take on the custom colors I gave them in shipbuilder, and despite a lot of poking around the forums and some googling, I can't find a way to do it. Anyone able to help?
Comments would be great, as well as ways to improve. Thanks!
Ed: Shoot, layering error on the big one. If you're reading this, gimme a sec.

Go to the options menu and set the ship glow setting to black.Rhonse wrote:

The colours aren't working properly due to the ship glow being set to the default yellow. Go to the Options Screen and scroll through the team colours, until you find one labeled as "Ship Glow" set it to black to turn it off, or set it to grey for a nice faint, white glow that won't mess up your colours.
Welcome to the forums. Fairly decent ships you've got there.
EDIT: Snap, I was beaten to the punch.

nice ships, not bad for starters.
I do suggest adding tail/engine area to the large one.
Just a thought.

I've got a couple complaints, but they're all due to weapon placement on the first ship; the missile launchers overlap the railguns, and some of the systems (demeters and deflectors, mainly) are on the edges of sections, which breaks up the form a bit.
Move those around and I won't have anything ill to say; the hull shapes are really nice work, some section abuse on #1 notwithstanding; to spruce things up a bit, consider swapping some of the 22s out, and certainly some of the 03s with 02s, 18s, or maybe 21s.

I looked at a lot of the stuff people suggested and it hopefully looks better now. The sections were a bit spammy, and I figured I'd try *cough* steal an engine technique I saw around that I liked, but can't remember who originated it to credit it.
Vega Fleet Yards Crescent-class escort carrier.
Long range combatant mostly designed to support more powerful laser-armed close-range ships in battle with fighter cover and missile support.
I'm working on more, but I might go back and try to make them a bit less section-spammy.
