Gat3rZ ship (new user)

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Gat3rZ ship (new user)

Post by Gat3rZ »

Helo, a new user :)
I discovered BF a few month ago and liked it very well.
I finaly decied to make ship for it, so this was the last I make : An
remake of the higaran cruiser from homeworld 2 :
Image
Image
It has 2 beamer fully customized for look like and do the same damage than the ion turet in HW2, 2 modified gatpulse that act like the railgun (arbiter turet) in HW2 and i replaced where normaly you can build 2 module on the back by 4 deflector (if you have another idea of what i can put for replace it, beacause you normaly don't have shield in HW2)
I think its balanced.
Comparison with the one in game :
Image
(note i put 2 ion turet and 2 railgun because there are this turet on the below of the original one, and because BF is in 2D i puted the turet on the top)
(colors are custom, you can customize the color of your ship in HW2)
What do you think of it ?
I can post the other one i make but i think its too unbalanced.
Oh and the most important : im french, sorry my bad englisch :)

Well, for starters, welcome to the community.

Two things: As a first try, that ship is very good. It's not blatantly overpowered, and you've done a good job at colouring it.

However, as a fanship, you haven't reached your goal. When I looked at your ship, I thought "nice!". Then I saw that pic of the actual cruiser, and I thought "holy ****!". My point is, although good, the ship doesn't nearly capture the sheer size of the Hiigaran cruiser, which is far more intimidating, and looks far heavier. With some work, or maybe a redesign (you also have a lot of stretched parts there) this may become a real monster.

Et moi, je suis Flamande.

Nice ship attempt - certainly better than my first ones were. However, a little flaw - thats acutally a Higaran Battleship, not a Cruiser - iirc, HW2 doesn't have any cruisers. It has Fighters, Gunships, Frigates, Destroyers, Carriers, Battleships, Shipyards and the uber Mothership.
Not a criticism, just pointing it out ;)

And welcome to the boards aswell.

Actually, Gat3rZ was the closest, that's a battlecruiser.

oui, c'est plus bon que le ship premier. (me trying to remember my francais)

The newer is better than the older ship. I would suggest that you view some of the other threads that have ships that you like on them. Then, try and figure out how those ships were made. Doing research like that helped me to improve, and it may help you.

Why don't you try using almost completely black sections (pure black glitches the game) put on top of the model you've already got to get a silhouette-ish look, that might make it look more like the picture. Excellent work for a first ship!

Vous voulez dire que c'est meilleur que le premier astronef? Oui, c'est vrais, je croit. Mais maintenant, c'est plus repetitive que le premier. Tu as beaucoup de travail encore.

For the others, I too think it's better, but right now it's more repetitive. He's still got some work to do at it.

It's a nice design, but I really think it could be a whole lot better and more detailed if it was bigger. The ship maker has a huge area. Use it to your advantage. The battlecruiser is big, so make it big in BSF!

Welcome by the way. 8)

Its nice.. but I think it needs more weapons.

I have thought into getting a Homeworld 1 Fleet. At least the taiidan side of the conflict. Using the scale of the models in the game, I end having extremely tiny explorers and heavy cruisers being bigger than a screen.

If I had to comment on the ship you have posted, I'd say it's main problem is overstretching of some pieces, such as the one connecting the core and the frontal mass driver. Reaching a good balance between stretching and repeating pieces is not easy -I tend to go too much for repetition, unfortunately, while you seem to go for overstretching-, achieving that balance helps the model. I, for one, try to use all pieces in a relative scale with each other, with only minor exceptions, to avoid the white lines being bigger in some parts of the ship than in others. It is hard to do, however, and I almost never get a ship to look as good as I would like to because some shapes being imposible to make without resizing.

In addition, I think the bottom of the ship is too wide. the pieces in the center should be widest part of the ship, not the other way, according to the actual model.

Anyway, and after all, if you can build a product of this quality as your first fanship, you have a brilliant future in front of you. So keep going!

Given the fact that the first version of the battlecruiser was not too "accurate" to the true model, while still good, I assume you were not using top-down pics of the ship you were trying to reproduce as background in the editor, were you? Since the second one is closer to the original model, it might mean you have started to use this technique. If not, I would give it a try. I had success with it. I assume you already know of my fanships, on which I used this technique -see my signature if not-

And by the way, your ship is missing the bridge :-P
