@ADM agreed smooth running gameplay is preferable to fancy features which can be easily replicated by placing a damaged ship sprite underneath the shiny undamaged ship.

Thats the bug you get when you turn off section glow in shipmaker, and yeah i also had difficulty with that particular sprite.

A: no, there is no way to change the core sprite, however you can change which core you use and you can even cover it up with other sections.

What an awesome idea!!!!! i have a warp gate you can use, and i agree with jwa about the modules charging up it will be hard to implement and you will need wave after wave of enemies to give a decent amount of game time but it has the potential to be great ships aren't to shabby either.
