The 3rd ship is actually pretty good compared to the others. The 1st ship, however, should have half its weapons removed to look decent.

There is are two small tabs to the left of the shipmaker screen, just right of the parts selection. The edit tab should be right next to the "add" tab.

It is not difficult to sound mature on IRC chat or when posting in forums, as each sentence can be considered and evaluated in advance before speaking. The ability to control units was not really meant to add any strategic or tactical elements to the game. It was implemented because the developers thought it would be cool and nobody has come up with a good reason not to include the feature.
